Subject: Poser 11.2.289 NOT Exporting .psd images

casamerica ( ) posted Tue, 01 October 2019 at 9:48 AM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 10:00 PM

I updated to the new Poser 11.2 shortly after it was available. Everything seemed to go rather smoothly. However, when I finally started rendering to actually save images I discovered that it is NOT exporting in .psd format... at least for me. I did another update this morning to 11.2.289 and no change... still no export to .psd. All I get is what is shown below (It is a .png save of what I get when I try to export to .psd). It appears to be a transparent image. I am not a computer genius but I never had this happen before the update and I have not altered how I rendered or how I exported. Any ideas? This is important. Thank you.

I am using 11.2.286 and just saved last night's render as a PSD. It opened fine in Photoshop as a valid PSD with the image.

Hi casamerica.

I've been exporting renders in .psd format quite often in Poser Pro 11.2. I'm using 2 Macs and neither one has given me any .psd export issues so far. Poser Pro versions 11.2.276 on one Mac and 11.2.289 on the other one.

Not sure what's going on with your installation. By chance, did you have any custom Auxilliary Render Settings set up that might not have been preserved during the upgrade? Just a shot in the dark, but someone else had some Z-Depth buffer data being saved along with the exported render. A quick peek at that Auxilliary Render Settings drop down in Render Settings (for FireFly) might show something unusual.

I hope this gets resolved quickly for you!

Also check if that .psd has a layer mask. I find that, when I render over a background image, it renders correctly but the .psd is saved with a mask on the entire background, I have to switch the mask off to see it.

Thank you, Ohki. I didn't know that Poser could extract a PSD as it's output. I always use PNG or TIFF or JPG when I am posting to the forum.

I tend to use png, but when I do that, it deletes all the background information from the image. As I've stopped using an EnvSphere and have been using a HDRI mapped to the background instead, sometimes I need to actually use what appears of it in my scene, so I have to save in psd so I can just switch the mask off and the image is there.

Aye, right you are, chuck but we all use a non lossy format for comping and stuff. I always, without fail, export to PNG. JPG is a measure of last resort, or a gallery post. 😁

I can copy and paste with the best of them. I always thought the following was wrong. JPEGs Lose Quality Every Time They're Opened and/or Saved: False Simply opening or displaying a JPEG image doesn't harm it in any way. Saving an image repeatedly during the same editing session without ever closing the image will not accumulate a loss in quality. Copying and renaming a JPEG will not introduce any loss, but some image editors do recompress JPEGs when the "Save as" command is used. Duplicate and rename JPEGs in a file manager rather than using "Save as JPEG" in an editing program to avoid more loss.

So do you render your background, save it as HDRI, Map it to the background (It fits?) and then render it with your main subjects? I have a feeling that render times aren't always additive. I hope I'm understood.

Boni! Hi! Always nice to see you. I'll be good. For now. 😁

Part 3 I'm sorry, but what do you mean? You lose the transparency?

Afrodite-Ohki ( ) posted Tue, 01 October 2019 at 5:20 PM

.PNG saves as a transparency and not as a mask (that .PSD does), so you only have the transparency. With .PSD you can recover what's "under" the transparency - as in, what rendered in the Background material.

Hmmm, out of curiosity, I just tried exporting out in .psd format, as I usually use. png, and it was fine. It did have the layer mask, but I just right clicked, and deleted it. It still looked the same, I guess because I rendered using BB's EnvSphere, and not an image applied to the Poser "Background"? ~shrugs~

Yes, BB's EnvSphere is an object, so Poser doesn't think to delete it out as if it were a transparency like it does with the Background :)

Ahhh, I was wondering if that was the reason why I didn't get the same issue. I do still think it strange that the layer mask is added, but I usually export to .png, so have never come across this before.

i think the layer mask started in P10Pro/2014. i can definitely confirm it does not exist, at least for me, in regular P10.

I JUST noticed I failed to see this question!

Nope. You know those equirectangular HDRI maps we use in things like EnvSphere? I use them, without the EnvSphere - with a shader to apply it to the background for the same effect. It lights the image better using the background than it does with the EnvSphere.
