Yes, this is obviously very useful for studios or as a classroom tool. It could also be useful for projects where two or more people are working on the same scene remotely. One person can be doing the modeling, then pass off the model to the other person who can be doing the UV unwrap on that model as the first person begins another model for the scene, all done remotely but in real-time.

Very interesting to say the least. I doubt I would ever do collaborative work with another Blender user, but I can definitely see this being a huge benefit for those who use it professionally for work.

Ubisoft was one of the first major Game dev companies to switch to Blender for their content creation after the introduction of 2.8. This is likely a tool they developed for their asset creation artists to collaborate in house.

it is good to see them sharing it with the public.

It does have potential the ability to have a team set up like LuxXeon said one person doing modeling another UV mapping and so forth can be used even amongst small groupd to develop a product and such for marketing right here on Rendo just food for thought

Exactly. As long as it can be used remotely through a virtual server that all parties can access, this can be extremely useful for the co-production of products where specialists in one discipline or another can work on assets MUCH faster (virtually real-time) from within the same scene file, cutting down on production time significantly. Think about how this has to work right now. If I were doing the modeling of a particular product, but Lobo was going to do the UV's of that object or the texture/materials then I would have to finish the model, save the blend file, zip it up in a container that can be efficiently transferred over email or upload it to a dropbox, then he would have to download it, do his work on it and repeat the process to send it to the next person or back to me. That could take a lot of time.

Using a script like this, we could both coordinate our time to work together on a model the same day at virtually the same time, while keeping productivity moving like an assembly line until the scene or product was complete. Very efficient and useful for cooperative asset production. This could really change the way content production is done in Blender for a number of reasons. Even content that is intended to be used in other software applications.

I'd definitely be interested in trying out this type of workflow in the near future with anyone willing to share in the content production or working on a scene.

I would seriously consider it I know I feel some what competent with my modeling and even perhaps my UV skills but texturing setting up cameras and fine tuning a render or compositing is still out of my league plus for a group of beginners or intermediates could work on a project together and perhaps bring something to market more quickly plus as a team can bring recognition to a group of artist where trying to do it all by yourself might discourage yourself because you do not have skills in one area or another that might discourage you from trying. That is some really positive food for thought LuxXeon

Exactly as I see it too, Lobo. Tons of cooperative potential in a system like that, especially if they can keep it free with an addon or as part of Blender internal. I think the possibility for collaboration on bringing a product to market(s), tutorials, or simply assistance with certain elements of scene creation are just some of the useful potential this can bring to Blender users. I'm sure people over at Blender Artists are already forming groups or alliances to do this very thing. Probably in a VFX or animation capacity.

Yes VFX and Animations in Blender have really made some leaps and bounds in the last year alone to be able to work collaboratively on such projects would speed up from story board to market much more quickly

I am curious if all users need to have the same third party addons.

I do not think they do wolf359 except for needing to have this particular add-on so they can work together as a team other third party add-ons I do not think they come into play when using the mixer add-on but I could be mistaken since this was just announced

I agree with Lobo, although I'm not certain. I would imagine and guess that you don't need to have the same addons, but you may need to be using the same version of Blender. I don't think it can work predictably if one person is using 2.79 and another is using 2.93.

I do believe that at the very least the same version of Blender would be needed at the very least with in the same version like 2.8.3 LTS or 2.9 family of release to keep continuity and they would share the same base tools that come with each base release. It will be interesting to see how this develops

This information is taken directly from the documentation of the addon:

Most of the elements contained in a scene, the data types, are synchronized, as well as the custom properties of all data blocks. In order to provide to all participants a collaborative experience with as much freedom as they have during a solo session, some features are deliberately not synchronized. This is the case for most User Interface elements, user preferences and configuration. Although belonging to the scene properties, preventing the current camera to be synchronized allows each user to view and render the scene from the camera of her choice

So, it seems you do not need to have the same addons or configurations. Even the UI is not synchronized. Only the data. This means that you may not even need to have the same versions of Blender, but I'm sure that would help stability and provide more predictable results. Here's some more info:

While you are joined to a room, your Blender updates are sent to the other users and your Blender is updated with the changes received from the other users. The updates are sent and received in real-time with a few exceptions. When an object is not in Object mode (for instance a Mesh is in Edit or Paint mode), the updates to this object are not sent to the other users and the updates received from other users are not processed. All the updates will be sent or processed as soon as the object mode changes. There are some other cases when updates may be delayed, which are listed in update delays. Some items are not synchronized, such as the 3D cursor, the current frame time, as well as other UI-related data.

It's a tricky system to be honest. It still needs a lot of work. The best idea would be if all instances of Blender were nearly identical so as to minimize any errors, but they claim it isn't necessary for this to work, since only the data itself is being shared. There is a possibility it can corrupt a .blend file, so making backups is essential.
