ajmarti ( ) posted Fri, 13 August 2021 at 10:50 AM · edited Tue, 19 November 2024 at 3:17 PM

Hi guys I own Poser 11 already. but I got a new iMac so I'm thinking of gettin POSER 12... Does it worth it? Or should I stay with POSER 11? Please give me your opinion.. I've seen some people having problems with 12 version

Thanks!

I'm on a Mac and like Poser 11.3 for the python functionality (Daz DSON Importer, Reality, etc). I am considering Poser 12 to render scenes setup in 11 while I continue to work in 11. Superfly rendering is claimed to be much faster in 12, so that could be a good combination.

You can try before you buy! There's a free 21 day trial.

Whether it's worth it depends on what you use Poser for. It renders in Superfly much faster, so if you use Superfly, it's probably worth it.

OTOH, there are drawbacks. A lot of Python scripts that work in older versions of Poser don't work in Poser 12. (Python 2 reached its end of life, meaning Poser 12 had to use Python 3.) Some older scripts are being converted, but not all. The simple tab in the Material Room is gone, so if you used that, you might miss it. There are a few bugs they are still working on.

You can keep both Poser 11 and 12 at the same time, and they will open each other's files, so you can have both if you want. (That's what I do.)

Thank you so much Randym77! I really appreciate your help! Yes, your observations are enough... I think ill stay with 11 for a while

You can also enter one of the Renderosity contests for chances to win your own copy of Poser 12.

If you need scripts and non-photoreal, Poser 11. If you want the latest-greatest-fastest photoreal on your latest-greatest-fastest graphics card (and don't care about scripts), then Poser 12. But as others have said, they should work together on the same PC. Bear in mind also that Poser 12 is still in Early Access, which means you should be wary about relying on for a major new project. Things break, get fixed, break again.

emjay247 - I thought DSON died with the Smith Micro versions of Poser, due to the Python upgrade from 2.7.1 to 2.7.17. How do you have DSON import running on Poser 11.3? Did perhaps the Mac version of 11.3 not get the Python upgrade that Windows got?

DSON continues to work with the latest iteration of P11, it has and will work until the software is completely decommissioned. Why else do you see Genesis figures appearing in P12, resave the figure back into the Library in P11, and reload it in P12.

Ah, thanks. Great. Fantastic news for all Poser 11 users, then.

The only reason I would buy 12 at this time.

What?!? They removed Combine Figure and Reduce Polygons? Why? Those features would be the only reason I would ever upgrade (I certainly would never use Poser 12 now knowing this, maybe Poser 11 if that's the last version that will support these features).

ssgbryan ( ) posted Sat, 14 August 2021 at 12:27 PM

Get the upgrade, keep Poser 11 as a helper app.

I have both (and a copy of Poser 7 - need it for a couple of netherworks products), as well as a copy of DS (for getting content out of DS).

Only consider Poser 12 if you work mainly with Superfly. That is the main advantage.

A_Sunbeam ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2021 at 3:27 PM

Depends on the OS. I have Mojave and Poser 12 will not work with it; you have to have Catalina or higher. So I stay with 11.3 ...

ajmarti ( ) posted Tue, 17 August 2021 at 11:07 AM

I have Big Sur... I think I'll stay with Poser 11 for a while. I don't need Superfly. Besides, it's too slow for me THANK YOU SO MUCH for your help GUYS!!!!
