Subject: Anyone else having problems with Windows XP and Poser ???

ohman ( ) posted Mon, 29 October 2001 at 8:38 AM · edited Thu, 16 January 2025 at 2:03 AM

I installed XP yesterday and Poser4 isn't working well to say the lest. I see people here that appears to run Poser/XP without problems so i wonder what i might be doing wrong.

Poser doesn't let me create a working window with greater resolution than 460x345. If i try anyway it just uses a smaller part of the window leaving the rest white. Characters/objects isn't visible, only the highlighting border when i move the mouse over the bodyparts. Poser always hangs imediately when i try to render.

I'm using Poser 4.03/Windows XP swedish version on an AMD Athlon 1.4 GHz PC.

Any ideas??

Im running Xp and poser without any problems and working windows of 600x600. Sounds to me , that there are problems with your graphiccard.I would try to look for an update for the driver.

I'm running Poser 4 on XP too (U.S.)...so far, no problems. Laurie

Ohman, I have had no problems either with my XP/Poser working together. I would suggest, like thgeisel, that you look for updated drivers. I would also visit the Windows Update page at the Micro$oft site. I do not know off hand if there are any updates available for the Swedish version of XP, but you never know what's up with MicroSoft or their software. Also XP's Help program may actually be of help these days. After starting it up you will see the option to "Find compatible hardware and software for Windows XP" under the heading "Pick a Task". I have not tried it yet, but I know it's there. It might offer you some assistance in correcting this problem your having.

I'm using the latest NVIDIA drivers for my TNT2 card. Everything else works but Poser refuses to co-operate. I wrote to Curious Labs about this but haven't got any answer yet. Hopefully this will solve someday.

I have some work to do in World Builder so there is no panic yet but...

Aaaargh!!

It's natural to get problems with an uncontrollable OS. My suggest : reboot and pray. STILL WAITING FOR A LINUX POSER VERSION.

thgeisel ( ) posted Mon, 29 October 2001 at 11:25 AM

I would look if xp is really using the driver you dl or his own driver.otherwise , i would replace the the driver with the other and look, which is working best. The XP driver normally works best!

Have you tried setting the compatibility mode of poser to another version? That might help for now. You can get details on how to at the TechTV site.

ohman ( ) posted Mon, 29 October 2001 at 12:52 PM

Yes i have tried both Windows 95, 98, NT and 2000 mode but there is no change at all. I have tried both XP's own driver and the new one fron NVIDIA. They claim that the driver is XP-compatible (whatever that's worth). In the FAQ at Curious Labs they claim that there for some reason must be a swap file on the same drive as Poser. No luck with that one either. /Ohman

thgeisel ( ) posted Mon, 29 October 2001 at 12:55 PM

checked my system, xp replaces the installed drivers with his own.i would try to replace the driver with the one you had before.and i would set a checkpoint in the systemrecovery before doing it

ohman ( ) posted Mon, 29 October 2001 at 1:11 PM

The driver i used before was XP's default drivers and they didn't work. The drivers on my old computer was the default drivers for Windows ME as far as i remember.

I wish that Metacreations had used the provided API's instead of creating their own half-working GUI. (No offence, just have to rant a bit... :o) /Ohman

Next thing I'd try would be re-installing Poser4. (Backup your folders first)

ohman ( ) posted Mon, 29 October 2001 at 1:40 PM

I think the current install is the sixth since yesterday. With and without 4.03 update. I think i give up... :o( /Ohman

thgeisel ( ) posted Mon, 29 October 2001 at 2:01 PM

I still think there is something with your graphiccard. did you try to reduce your graphic acceleration??Its normally set to highest value, try to reduce to min and if its working set slowly to higher levels

Have you tried changing screen resolution? (I sometimes use an old competitor of PhotoShop called PhotoStyler to resample graphics that exhibits vaguely similar symptoms at certain resolutions) Beyond that I'm stumped! I won't finish upgrading to WIN-XP, myself for a week or so. hope I don't have a similar problem!

ohman ( ) posted Mon, 29 October 2001 at 2:35 PM

Thanks everybody for the feedback!

XP doesn't allow me to use any of the old TNT2 drivers. The one i'm currently using is dowlnoaded from NVIDIA themselves. I don't think that XP uses another since the version number is correct and the provider is NVIDIA.

I also tried to reduce the graphic acceleration with no result. Changing the screen resolution from 1152x864 to both 1024x768 and 800x600 had no effect either.

I will visit a friend with my Poser CD tomorrow and try to install it on his english XP version. Hope THAT works. :o/

ohman ( ) posted Mon, 29 October 2001 at 3:06 PM

I just got this from Curious Labs: "Poser must be run on a machine where both Poser and the OS are using the same language. Language and notational differences (3.79 US vs. 3,78 EU) could cause any number of problems since it affects the 3d calculations." I hope this the solution. /Ohman

soulhuntre ( ) posted Mon, 29 October 2001 at 3:55 PM

Sounds like it probably is. XP has been incredibly compatible and stable for me, so it's probablys omething like this.

ohman ( ) posted Mon, 29 October 2001 at 4:24 PM

Just a thought: What on earth does regional settings has to do wih 3d-calculations??? /Ohman

Kalypso ( ) posted Mon, 29 October 2001 at 4:42 PM
Site Admin

The regional settings affect the decimal system used as you mention above. The tenths, hundreds etc come after a period in the US version but in most European countries we use a comma. I know because Bryce had a similar problem (so it must be a 3d thing) but all I had to do was change the decimal symbol in Control Panel/Regional Settings/Number Trying adjusting just that and see if it works.

I've been reading articles by Win XP betta testers all the way to it's release. It seems that Microsoft is intentionally ending support for older versions of SOME hardwear and will not guarantee compatability with older style hardwear. They claim this will reduce the amount of disk space that Windows XP takes up since it has grown so much already. Soooo. Maybe, just maybe, the good old standard TNT2 video cards MAY be no longer supported. Maybe. Please prove me wrong. Oh and vronsky. I'm STILL WAITING FOR A LINUX POSER VERSION also. I began using Mandrake Linux two months ago after reading all the XP/.net plans, Passport, and the comming Longhorn OS. A year ago I had stoped using Linux. Looks like I should've stuck with it.

soulhuntre ( ) posted Tue, 30 October 2001 at 3:42 AM

Support for TNT2 cards must come from the place it always has to come rom... from the manufacturer of the cards. Microsoft does a good job of shipping drivers with the OS but it is NOT their responsability to do this.

ohman ( ) posted Tue, 30 October 2001 at 10:22 AM

NVIDIAS drivers are qualified for XP. XP itself says so. /Ohman

ohman ( ) posted Wed, 31 October 2001 at 1:34 AM

Just FYI: As Curious Labs said Poser is working fine on an english XP version. Thank god! Four days without Poser wasn't good for my health :o) /Ohman
