Oy. I have been browsingthe galleries, and I've seen a lot of excellent work. People here are so very good about leaving comments too. These are great things about this forum. But... I find myself becoming increasingly uncomfortable, to the point of cringing, when I see some of the comments. I put a lot of time, effort, thought, and love into my work. Some of it, IMO, is pretty damned good. Some of it is merely OK, but was just meant for fun, and not necessarily art, so that's ok, and some of it is plain crap (which nobody gets to see ;P~) I consider myself an erotic illustrator and pin up artist. I don't just toss a nudie beauty on the page and call it art. I take a lot of time and effort to set up the pose, the lighting, the textures, the props, the facial expressions, and go in after rendering and do post work, to make it the best I possibly can. I also don't generally do an images that I would be uncomfortable having my children view. Some of the nudes here are completely gratuitous, and have no thought put to them at all...many others, however, have had the same care put into them that i put into my own work. Our talents may all vary by degrees, but you can tell when someone has honestly put effort into a piece and when they have not. What makes me uncomfortable is the seeming intolerance that many viewers and commentators have for nudity in general. They seem to treat all nudity like it's something shameful...or worse, easy to do. While I'm confident in my own work to know when it's good, and when it's not, I do worry that my own work will also be attacked in this manner. C&C on technical things, and suggestions for improvement are one thing, but being insulted because I do nudes is hurtful, no matter how confident one might be. When I see people commenting like that on other peoples work, it hurts me as well. There is a nudity tag. If you don't want to see it, you don't have to look at it. Please don't be insulting simply because you don't like the subject matter. Just saying my piece on the matter.

Good comments, Purr3d, BUT, many people don't use the nudity flag when posting their work. I have the nudity tag set (nieces & nephews you know), yet many nudes show up anyway. I don't comment, if I don't like, then I don't look. However, the nudity flag IS there for a reason and it's a pity many artists don't have the courtesy to use it. Greywolf

I don't mind nudes at all. There was one nude I wailed on though (its one of the top 20 most viewed i think), simply because there were a good 10 or so needless flaws in the image (it was a photo mixed with a poser character that that needed overnight surgery to fix), and not a single person out of the 50 or so who commented mentioned anything, saying only "Marvelous", and "SHES SO HOT!" That upset me, because not only was the image kinda, well, not up to par (especially by the standards the artist in question set for himself with other works which were undoubtedly F'IN GREAT!), but that everyone seemed to be in awe of the chicks pixel areolas. Those are ones I comment on. Generally, if I see a nude that I feel can be improved in some areas, what I'll say is, "This kinda stuff really isn't my thing, but I can see that this this and this are spot on, though I feel the lighting is out of place with this image, the face could possibly be enhanced by a slight rembrandt lighting setup." If I see nudes I like, generally I don't comment, or I stop and say "This is nice man," or "This may not be my thing, but it still rawks." As a photographer, I'm all for nudes. As a digital artist, while I haven't forayed into the genre, I'm sure I wouldn't have any qualms about it. As for the people leaving stupid comments, it's happened to my work as well, so I can understand at least somewhat what it's like. In the end though, I just have to say either "phuck'em, theyre just jealous," or "phuck'em cause one person's opinion won't change my view on it, and that view is that I put a lot of work into this, I'm completely satisfied that my design not only met or exceeded its function, but that it also did it with some style." In the end dude, 'phuck'em'.

I'm partial to erotic artwork and I've often thought while browsing and reading comments, that R'osity should have a separate "Adult" section. It would make my browsing easier and stumbling across unflagged images would be reduced (they could be done by default in that section).

MaxxArcher ( ) posted Thu, 29 November 2001 at 8:39 AM

I think that people should stop projecting their own prudish upbringing onto others. Whats wrong with a nude kid or adult? Simply try to look beyond the skin for once, you might see a message or the effort it took to create the image. Remember, filth, dirt and whatever garbage you can come up with to comment on an image, it all originates from your own mind. Talking about images, they ARE images, rendered, drawn by an artist (to be), to me they are brief moments, a look into the personal thoughts of a person, whatever the subject. Some good, some bad. I for one wont have my imagination and creativity bound by the rules and standards other people make. BTW, did you know that the sex industry on the NET and in general has the biggest market and the largest profits in the world? Go figure.... Maxx :-)

"BTW, did you know that the sex industry on the NET and in general has the biggest market and the largest profits in the world? Go figure...." This really can't be a shock to anyone? Nor is it a bad thing.

Hmmm, I think that if a seperate section was created it'd be the one that got the most viewings, to the detriment of the images without nudity. I also think that once people had thier own private area, that it would, A) be "politically" devisive, and B) encourage those who wanted to, to post "pure" porn, which may not be what Edgenet media had in mind, since it would only attract people who simply wanted to look at the pictures and had no intent of either participating in the forums or buying anything from the store. later jb

Attached Link: http://www.renderotica.com

Just to jump in here: First, there is a place for adult & erotic graphic art- see the attached link. I don't know the history of the site, but I have the feeling that it may have been the adult "spin-off" of this site. Go there for your erotic and adult artwork- when you enter the site, you know that's what you're going to see, so there are no self-appointed "censors". To get into this debate, though: As some of the comments on some so-called "nude" images show, nudity "sells"- it gets more views and more comments... even if the so-called "nude" picture is nothing more than a "Ha, made ya look" image. And, yes, some "artists" (and I use the term very loosely) are actually doing this- they post a "nude" thumbnail and when you click it, the real picture has nothing to do with the thumbnail... but they got another viewing (and further rise in the "Most Viewed" listing). And, as you read the comments about the picture, you'll see the debate about this very issue. As for the argument over "nude" pictures, it's a debate that will probably go on forever. Just look in the news for the American people's warped ideas: ABC-TV has come under attack for showing "too much" when it aired its "Victoria's Secret Lingerie Special". Well, duh, it's *lingerie*, it's probably going to show "too much" (even though ABC did use "creative camera angles"). If you don't want to see stuff like this, don't view it. As less people view it, the less popular it is and the less likely it will be shown again. And, of course, no-one gets upset that the previous night's "NYPD Blue" had a gunfight or shooting or that an episode of "ER" showed too much blood. But, if someone's naked backside is shown, then there needs to be adult warnings and parental discretion and kids should leave the room and ... --John

Renderotica is a cool place. AAMOF I'm a mod there. However, I want a broader audience for my work than just those who are looking for "Adults Only" images. I don't consider most of my images to be adult only (many people do, and they are usually the ones who take issue with nudity in general, hence the tags and warnings, and disclaimers). A lot of people are uncomfortable going to sites like Renderotica and Thralldom, but have no issue with nudity in art. I truly despise being told that because my images contain nudity, that they belong automatically segregated at a site lite Rendrotica. Some of my images are of a more erotic nature and so they are, indeed, more appropriately placed over there, but most of them are artistic nudes or fun pin ups. I went to an anime convention over the summer and entered the art contest and auction. They had my work in a little cubicle (only two other artists had nudes), away from everyone else, and only persons over 18 could enter. Out of 5 or 6 images, one should have been stuffed in that cubicle. The others were completely harmless nudes. I feel like I lost sales because of that. Because there are adults who dislike srtong sexual themed images, but still appreciate nudes, who would not step into that cubicle because of the "Adults Only" stigma. Why are Americans such prudes? Hmph! Next we will be censoring Degas at the MFA.

Purr3D ( ) posted Thu, 29 November 2001 at 12:33 PM

BTW, I won the top 2 prizes for the adult division in that contest. I feel it was ill gotten, however, because I had so little competition. I would have liked to go up against the work on the other side of the cubicle...the ones that I went " WOW" at. ::grrr::

Chailynne ( ) posted Thu, 29 November 2001 at 1:55 PM

I agree Purr. Even if I don't like an image's subject matter, I can still make an opinion on textures, lighting, poses, props... clothes shouldn't matter as long as it follows the guidelines of the site which says no arrousal be showing. I don't make many comments because I'm not an artist really. This is more of a hobby for me. Even if there are flaws in a picture, if the render quality is stunning (ie... pose isn't quite right but textures and lighting make me go "Wow") whether I like the subject or not I'm still impressed by other parts. I guess to me not everything has to be perfect (including subject) to make a picture worth viewing. People need to get over it already. It's variety that makes the world go around, let's not make everything grey.

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Thu, 29 November 2001 at 3:10 PM

Part of the problem i sthat a lot of people that are not of age are looking at the pics in there. If you show a nekkid person walking in a movie it is R rated ... over 17 and all that but there are a number of people that are learning and all that are under 17.

SergeantJack ( ) posted Thu, 29 November 2001 at 8:46 PM

I don't think it's bad that some people don't want to see nudity. I love browsing through the galleries here, and I applaud those people who are responsible enough to check the "nudity" block when they post nude pics. What I really don't appreciate is people putting nudity in the thumbnails. I like to surf through the galleries, and it's a real pain to have to weed through the pictures of enormous breasts. A thumbnail can be enticing and sensuous without showing inappropriate material. I kind of hope Renderosity starts doing something about that in the future. One last thought: people who post pictures without nudity aren't offending anybody (excluding those pics loaded with racial statements or violence or the like). They don't offend you: please be courteous and avoid offending them. Use the nudity flag: that's what it's there for, and it won't detract from your picture at all. Peace. -- Sarge

My kids are under 17 and go to the St. Louis art museum at least twice a year, where there are nudes on display right out in the main galleries. The art museum is not rated R. There are even some nude Cherub bronzes in public fountains in this town. Outside! My point is that there is a huge difference between nude art work, erotic art work and pornography. Poser is a 3D art package developed to enable people to generate art centered around the Human figure. Some of those figures are inevitably going to be nude. There are restrictions in the galleries here that prohibit pornography, and even limit eroticism (there IS a difference). Therefore most of the nudes in the galleries are just art. Good or bad art, just like with everything else, but just art. I do think that it would help if people that post nudes would consistently check the Nudity flag AND not include it in the thumb nail, so that those that ARE offended by it could avoid it. It does not really help much if you check the Nudity flag and then post a thumb nail with the said nudity in it, does it? That I totally agree with, since it takes nothing away from the artist and protects the sensibilities of those with more conservative views. And it would help keep children from unintentional encounters with nudity. Face it, if they WANT to see it, they can find just about anything on the Internet; the Renderosity galleries shouldn't be you biggest concern in that regard. jon

jstro ... I agree but I also don't think that most of the nudes in the renderosity art gallery are up to the caliber of ones in a museum and those in the are often more tastefully done and discreeetly covered. Personally I have no problem with nudes but I am a guy living by myself with no kids etc. I do thnk ther are too many of them in the galleries for no purpose. If it evokes soemthing or is done with a purpose it is one thing but if it is done for the sole purpose of being a nude with the breast dials cranked up and all it is a bit ridiculous. Just me though

jstro ( ) posted Thu, 29 November 2001 at 9:56 PM

Ghost - as I said, some of it's good, some of it's not. Just like the other art posted. And what is good or not varies by viewer. I just think if people would ALWAYS check the Nudity flag AND not put the nudity in their thumbs then no one would have cause to complain (though some still would, I'm sure). jon

In my past, I've known girls who were abused by their loved ones. I always took great care to let these girls know they were safe with me. That included making a big deal about my shyness, and making sure I was not in the same room when the girls were dressing. My time with these beautiful souls was regretfully short.. a long story. But after knowing their stories, and earning their trust, I just can't look at pictures of naked children. Concerning thumbnails: I've always figured a thumbnail is supposed to be a smaller version of the larger picture. You click on it to load the larger picture. So it doesn't make sense to have a thumbnail that is really a totally different picture.

Purr3D ( ) posted Sat, 01 December 2001 at 12:35 AM

You can take a piece of the picture and use it as a thumb, along with the nudity tag, or; you can pixelate the naughty bits or blur them so that the nudity is obscured for the thumb. I have done that for the Green Glow Web Ring image that I am required to have on my index page as a member of the ring. My index page also contains my adult content and nudity warning, so I thought it best to censor the image. Doesn't make much sense to me to warn folks about nudity if I'm going to plaster it on the same page. Same should apply for thumbs....although I really think people just need to get over themselves (OMG! It's a nipple! never seen one of them afore...)
