Subject: Compatibility problems using Photoshop 6.0 and Win 2000

Staby ( ) posted Sun, 02 December 2001 at 5:46 AM · edited Mon, 28 October 2024 at 9:39 AM

Do you know if ther are compatibility problems with Photoshop 6.0 and Win 2000 Professional? I didn't have problems using PS6 with Win NT Workstation and only after I upgraded I started to have urecovereble errors of Explorer when I open or try to open jpg files, read only files archived on CDs or zipped jpg files... I tried to reinstall Win 2000 (I have a full version), but the problem persist. I also upgraded to PS 6.01... nothing! I should add that the problem is random it does not happen with every jpg and that the only problem I had running PS6 on win NT was an incompatibility with Arobat... On the Adobe site I didn't find an answer I hope that you can help me. I'm also trying to have an answer from Microsoft... Thanks

well i have win 2000 and photoshop 6, and i've never hav any kind of problems caused by this combination. I sometimes have problems, but that are just bugs in photoshop and i had them too in win 98, so i think could at least try to use photoshop (or the demo if you haven't already have bought the program) but i never had compatibility problems!

I have had Photoshop 6.0 for almost a year and worked fine before I changed the operative system. It is frustrating, I can't figure out what is wrong... It is a serious problem, when the pop up error window appears and I close it then another one pops up and again and again in a loop and I can't do anything... I have even problems to shut down the Pc or log out! When I restart the PC the error is still there and keeps opening pop up windows telling Explorer.exe caused error and had to be closed. The only solution I found is log out and then log in as Administrator, renaming my profile. Next time I log in using my user name, my old profile is recreated empty and I have to move my setting from the renamed one to the new one. When I restart the PC everything works fine until the next crash happens. I can work without problems for some days and then bam! Given the error message I think the problem is with win 2000, but the fact that almost every time is related to a jpg file and I only use Photoshop to open them makes me think of compatibility issues with win 2000... I'm going crazy!

and have you already tried to open that jpg file in an other program? because i have no problems with that... see you jou just have to try the demo of ps6 and see what hapens. I think it's also a problem with the combination of hardwar and software...

They are files I used without problems in PS 6.0 and Win NT. I have to clarify that I have these problems even if I only select the files in Windows and I don't have the time to try to open them in Photoshop. They can be existing files, dowloaded files (for example a DAZ template) or archived files that I could open or tranfser on my hard disk without trouble prior the change to Win 2000. Btw Is there a particular reason I should try the demo of PS 6 rather than the complete PS6. Thanks

I can't say i've had any compatiblity problems either. I've run Adobe Photoshop Version 5.0, 5.5, on Win98 and 6.0, 6.01 on Win98, WinME, Win2K Pro and currently on XP with no problems.

I have had the explorer.exe has caused an error and will be shut down. Everytime I tried to copy/paste, drag/drop any file on destop or between any folder, I would get that error when I was using Win98. I was dual booting with Win2k and never got the error on that. It drove me crazy. I tried everything. Even installing Win98 again. The only way I could copy/move a file was to zip it up and unzip it in new location or boot using Win2K Pro and copy/move my Win98 files that way. Finally I had to reformat and installed Win98 and Win2K again. The problem vanished.

if graphics are your main deal, the solution would be to use a stable (for you that is) operating system that doesn't fawk up as much as it is already for you. Either "downgrade" back to NT, or "upgrade" to XP (if XP can even be considered an upgrade... iiiicck). ry

I found Win2K Pro the most stable so far. Those stories of XP not crashing? I've had XP for a few days and I would have to take my socks off to count the times it crashed on me so far. But I do agree, find an OS that works for you and your graphics and stick with it or if size of hard drive permits, install more than one OS on your hard drive. Dual or even Triple booting for all your needs.

It actually sounds like you either did something wrong when you patched your Windows 2000 (The original Windows 2000 had a strange bug, causing the Explorer to crash. ServicePack 1 cured that bug.) You might also have a virus. My computer at home works just fine with Win2K and Photoshop 6.01 and the 12 computers at work also work quite good with the same combination. It probably is something different. Try using the TaskManager to find out what tasks your computer is running. Try using a reliable anti-virus programm. If you are using ACDSee 4.0 - get rid of that programm as fast as possible. It is total junk and crashes almost everytime you try to use it. ACDSee 3.1 is much, much better. If that doesn't fix your problem, reinstall Win2K ServicePack 1 and Servicepack 2. If that doesn't help, you got real problems. Try to reinstall your system and see if the problem is still there. If it is still there, you probably have a hardware-problem. Joerg Weber

Many Thanks to all of you. I'm beginning to think that the problem is a Win 2000 installation gone wrong too. Windows looked pretty instable and the Explorer crash issue presented itself almost from the beginning. I run a scan disk a few days ago and found no virus. I will reinstall win 2000 very carefully in the next few days and see wath happens. I want just to be sure to have a stable system because I just received the LightWave 7 demo from Newtek and it will be my next purchase. I need to see if it runs fine prior the purchase... Thanks again!
