Subject: AvatarLab questions

I have downloaded the demo, and it looks like it can be a lot of fun to play with. My question is, has anyone imported one of their characters into Poser and how well does it work? The demo is save/export disabled.

Yes I have and yes it does :)

I've also done the reverse and added extra torsos and legs to AvLab. Now to be fair that takes a little juggling but it can be done. AvLab to Poser is simply file/save... file open, and could not be easier.

Hey Phil, Great looking characters you have here. All who read this should note that these characters have a fairly low polygon count. Large polycounts REALLY bog down the Atmosphere world making it slow for everyone. Phil has shown that awsome looking characters can be achieved with low polycounts. Phil... Your my hero! Now everybody say this together... LOW POLYCOUNT... Cheers, LawnDart

Phil Please describe the juggling you use to add extra torsos and legs to AvLab. Also, are you limited, or can you also add heads? Thanks

wyrwulf ( ) posted Wed, 05 December 2001 at 10:46 PM

Thanks for the answers. Are the characters fully poseable in Poser? It looks like you could use them for all kinds of fun in Poser.

PhilC ( ) posted Thu, 06 December 2001 at 5:45 AM

If you save out of AvLab as a Poser document then yes they come into Poser fully poseable.

I'm currently writing a tutorial to show how to create avatars in the Pro Pack and will include how to create add ons for AvLab.

Thanks again, Phil. I guess I'm going to have to order before the sale is off.

I have Avatar Lab and I must say it is a great program, but I can't help but be upset that anything Poser items you create are not permittied to be distributed as are no "spun off" items such as faces, morphs, poses, et al. This completely limits the use of this program and it is very disappointing. I wrote Curious Labs almost threee weeks ago asking them to clarify their EULA on Avatar Lab and they have yet to respond. I even wrote sayint that I could not accept their EULA and requested a refund, agreeing to remove it from my system, and still no response. Be very careful when you purchase this program. Don't look for it to be a great Poser item, you have to realyy be into Adobe Atmosphere to enjoy this. I'm not... So I don't...

Pariah, Could you send me an email directly with your questions? We do have a differnet EULA in place regarding content from the one we have with Poser and Pro Pack, and this is more restrictive regarding the commercial re-use of the content. Our intent isn't to exclude the ability to grow a market from the resale of modified content spun out from Avatar Lab, but to grant permission to specifc artists that request that permission for them to pursue a business in this direction. We want to see a market grow up around Avatar Lab. We also want to protect the tool from being misused commercially though. An example of how I interpret misuse is for an individual to purchase the product, use the standard library settings to create thousands of either free or for sale Avatars and distribute them in a manner which could kill our ability to sell this very in-expensive tool. (29.00 for the time being) Our EULA simply requires that we approve the commercial uses of the standard Avatar Lab content. This can be done via a simple approval from us, but that, for the time being, needs me to be in the office, and I haven't been until this last week. I apologize if you didn't receive a reply back to your email. I was out of the office around the holiday getting married and the support staff here needed feedback from me before deeply responding to question about the EULA. Sincerely, Steve Cooper

Hi Steve - I did write back to you. Did you receive my email? Do you have any more questions?

Yes they can, just copy the Poser PP2 and library thumbnail PNG file to the Avatar Labruntimeprops folder. Extra body parts may be added in a similar fashion. You may like to see how I did it by reading http://www.philc.net/avatarTutorial3.htm Curious labs also has information on this on their site.

Pariah, I'm not sure if I received an email from you, but I did reply to a similar question to yours today. Perhaps that was your email. Kupa

kjlintner ( ) posted Tue, 18 December 2001 at 5:16 PM

Yes, Steve, it was me and thanks for the personal service. It was very nice and I am totally 100% satisfied with the result. Thanks again Steve. It has been a pleasure doing business with you. I encourage everyone to buy themselves a copy of Avatar Labs.

Pariah, If I had the time, I'd talk to every user directly. I truly enjoy meeting the folks that work with our products. Glad to be of help, Kupa

wyrwulf ( ) posted Tue, 18 December 2001 at 9:29 PM

Kupa, what about commercial/personal use of AvLab characters and pose files as stand-alone rendered images and animations? I sent an e-mail to legal@curiouslabs.com a few days ago, but haven't heard back yet.

kupa ( ) posted Wed, 19 December 2001 at 11:11 AM

Wyrwulf, The list of distribution restricted content in the EULA is pretty specific by file type. None of the items on this list are .jpg, .gif, .avi, .mov, .png etc. So any images or renderings created using the content is free from restrictions. I think that's the answer to your question, if I get your question right. Kupa

That's it, Steve. Thanks.
