practicing again while cating with freind s do you think the legs are too short at the moment its about 825 polys but im going to make a decent model out of it opinions or crits welcome

LOL! You kill me... you post this great model, and say something like "oh... was boiling an egg and had to kill 3 minutes..." ;] It looks like a Minotaur. I don't know why, it just popped into my head when I saw it. Just add horns....

TRAVISB ( ) posted Sun, 06 January 2002 at 4:45 AM

LMAO thanks for making me smile

Teyon ( ) posted Sun, 06 January 2002 at 11:34 AM

THe legs aren't too short, buddy, his waist is. THat's why he seems a little squat. If you want to make him seem like he's not as short you can extend the waist or slim the legs (mass relations can also make things appear short or tall). Good work.

Hey Travis D'ya mind if I stir things up a bit? You're obviously well on top of the software now, you can control the forms and make them do what you want, but you keep doing modified bipedal human structures or human/something hybrids. Nowt wrong with that except that there's a million of them out there. Why don't you have a go at something different?. Not a humanoid, not a dragon, not a goblin... something new. Start from its position in nature, is it a predator, or a herd animal- whatever and build it up so that the form follows the function. I wouldn't dare criticise you technically, you're too good, but I feel you could do way better if you pushed yourself. Please don't take this as a crit. It isn't. I'd just love to see what you can really do, not just what comes out when you're a bit bored and have been doodling with respect and admiration peejay

comastalker ( ) posted Mon, 07 January 2002 at 2:02 PM

well...couldn't express it any better, not get me wrong, but maybe you should have a look at teyons work, he's breakin' out of the human-structure-model every day, and the results are more than just perfect (hmm.. I know, there ain't perfect-) modeling. Try something, you're modeling skillz are higher than most of the users in here. Of course, you shouldn't get this wrong, too, but anyway, it's sth. kinda criticism...

Thank you very much peejay i really like your reply and as far as crit 'ing my stuff im always open to crits no matter what level i get to be but thank you for your kind words ! Im all for trying something new, most of my models have been more for practicing difrent stlyes and layouts of poly modeling, there are so many ways its easy to find a way your good at and stick to i,t but i think that makes a weak modeler> Most of my models have been extremly boring so far :) but this is the reason I would like to see a sketch or drawing or hear a character description if you would like to take the time and ill try and make something from it ! if you would like and id love to hear what you think honestly when i finish i love rep;ies like this because its what i was hoping this forum could be thanx to evryone else for there supportive comment i really do apreciate them !

here is what im curently doing to this one

comastalker ( ) posted Mon, 07 January 2002 at 2:12 PM

do you know familiars...they are often mentioned magic creatures (well they consist of bones and blood, too) which follow their creators 'til they die... I tried to model familiars several times, but never really worked on it. Since there are only a few familiars whose looking is always the same (like the bloodclaw-familiar) you have to decide how it looks like (mostly they're flying)

TRAVISB ( ) posted Mon, 07 January 2002 at 2:12 PM

as for the reason i do human models so much is once you master the form of the human body i think everything else is simple it is often said to model a horse or dinosaur etc is easier than a human not that the models are easier but people tend to notice poprtion mistakes and flaws in a human easier than the same mistakes in other subjects this is why i have chosen such a boring subjet to practice with thanks com ! I agree that teyon is a better modeler too ! keep posting everyone im enjoying the feed back !!

comastalker ( ) posted Mon, 07 January 2002 at 2:13 PM

hmm...looks good ! what did you use as renderer, looks like flamingo or lightwave

a difrent render

comastalker ( ) posted Mon, 07 January 2002 at 2:15 PM

well, I never said he's a better modeler (for me, you both model godlike, skillz lying in the deepest fog (for me)) ! I just think, teyon is USING his skillz in different ways..

the claw makes me wanna cry...amazing

peejay ( ) posted Mon, 07 January 2002 at 3:30 PM

OK travis here's a real challenge My Traugs (when they're eventually finished) need riding beasts. Some will ride rats and weasels, some will ride moles, but one of them needs a new creature. An ocean going frog, a whale frog if you like. Now I have no idea what this beast will look like, but his name is NESTOR, he is unfailingly cheerful, positive and supportive, no matter what happens he will be there for his friends. Could you create a beast whose face somehow gets that across? I know its cheeky, but you did ask. (Brought a bit of life to the forum anyway) regards peejay

TRAVISB ( ) posted Mon, 07 January 2002 at 4:44 PM

i am realy not good for cheerful looking creatures LOL but i think cheerful would be more in the animators hands than the model design but ill give it a try will be about 2 months though have to finish some stuff first with siggraph 6months away question when you say a whale frog though does this mean a large aquatic frog with legs etc it may be difficult because a whale dies of sufocation when on land from its bodyweight ?

peejay ( ) posted Mon, 07 January 2002 at 5:05 PM

Sure very good point, my Traugs are Mushroom people, their other mounts are moles and rats, so a very large creature to them may not be much bigger than a large dog. "I'm not really good for cheerful.." hmmn You're certainly right that the expression and animation can do a lot, but so can the modelling. Remember I said I wanted to push you. I think you are better than you think you are... we'll see. Please don't worry if it can't be done, or if the idea is just plain silly. I specialise in those. And definitely don't worry about the time, this is supposed to be fun after all. If it stops being fun, stop. Don't let my wild ideas ruin it for you regards peejay

Teyon ( ) posted Mon, 07 January 2002 at 9:50 PM

I'm just gonna harp in here and say I'm not really better than Travis, we're on similar wavelengths. :) I tend to have VERY specific things on my mind when I go into a model but Trav usually creates as he works. That's a lot harder to do and he deserves much praise for doing it and doing it well. I agree with the idea that all modelers should try and stretch their legs beyond what they know (I'm doing that now...working on buildings and stuff). As for the happy go lucky feel of a character model, it's important that a model can convey that feel even when standing still. This usually means that the model is designed to be happy like but doesn't mean it always has to be that way. Travis makes a good point about the animator playing a bigger part of that. Still, I'd like to see you do another cuddly wuddly character (the anime girl you made was pretty cool). I'd think you'd be great at it and it would lend a bit more range to your skill. All in all, I model what I like and so does Trav and so do most folk. We sometimes get that urge to break away from the norm but it's nice to perfect a particular part of you skill if you can. I tend to lean towards animals and Trav leans toward humanoids...reminds me, I need to try more human-like things. Speaking of that, Trav, try to fit the gums to the teeth, you know, make sockets for 'em. I like the description of the Nestor and now that my personal project has dwindled to near nothingness, I may take a swing at modeling that if you don't mind. Do I ever talk alot!! Gonna go be quiet now, bye.

peejay ( ) posted Tue, 08 January 2002 at 2:16 AM

Mind!!? The more the merrier. I love those art calendars you can get for famous books. It's fascinating how different people see things. Go for it. And talk as much as you want :)
