Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 29 10:50 pm)
Well, if you do reinstall Poser, you won't affect anything inside Poser that you installed after it. I've had to reinstall Poser, and the extra characters, etc. stayed intact. (You would have to reinstall the 4.03 patch, though.) I haven't had the kernel32.dll error so I can't tell you what might be the problem. Hopefully it is not a W ME issue.
Couple of quick questions/suggestions; Are you using Poser 4, & have you installed the free upgrade to Poser 4.03 from the Curious Labs site? Vic & Mic won't work properly until you do. If you have P4.03 already, what's you're OS? You might want to consider running SFC (Win9x's SystemFileCheck utility) to verify if any dlls have gone corrupt (like kernell32.dll; it's part of the OS, not Poser) If you have Nortons's SystemWorks, you might be due for a system checkup. If all else fails, a Poser Reinstall & re-upgrade isn't really all that difficult. just back up your runtime folders first. - I've read posts from some who've re-installed Pose over itself, but I'd still backup the folders as a precaution. Good Luck!
Regarding SFC; It's one of Windows' "hidden utilities" - Can't recall if it's installed by default, or even if it's in every version. Click on Start, then Run, then type in the sfc followed by the enter key. If it doesn't run from that, you might need to search the Windows distribution CD for it, or perhaps your version of Windows doesn't include it. It's function in XP has changed, but I used to run it weekly in Win98. It scans all the system files & notifies you of any that have changed since the last time it ran, giving you the chance to restore any changed from the original cab files, or any backups you've made (every 3 months, when windows was behabing itself, I backed up all the critical system files, Dlls, Etc. into a ZZZ-BkUp folder under Windows, so I could easily fix any problems caused by incompetantly designed applications or utilities I'd recently installed (surprising how many programs are written to overwrite critical system files, even when the system files are months newer that the version being installed). It also offers to restore any single file you specify, extracting it from the original CAB files. I once did a search for any *.exe files in the Windows folders, researching all of them that had the same datestamp as windows itself, & installing all I found on the Win-CD. I found 14-18 that had no actual icons or controls in Windows itself. Most had associated help files, & all could be called from the run menu. I created a folder in my start menu & put shortcut to all of them there. Labeled it "Hidden WinUtilities". most of them were pretty specialized, but SFC, MSConfig, and 2 or 3 others I found to be very useful for maintaining control over what was going on in my computer. Good Luck
Hey folks, Jimm said upfront that Windows ME (Millennium) is his operating system. I don't know if we were told whether Poser was updated to 4.03 yet? If it hasn't, then this is the first thing to do. I must say I used to really like Windows ME, but it seemed to have all sorts of problems with Poser. I didn't really remember that till I went from having Windows 2000 Pro back to Windows ME, on a fresh install. I was really glad when I finally bought Windows XP Home Edition. I have no more such problems. (Also, if someone uses any version of Windows, they should click on the Start button, look up near the top for Windows Update. Go online first, then check for any new updates. I advise this even if you have a new computer with Windows XP.. there were already new updates on Day 1 for me!)
Of the Windows 9x versions, Windows ME is probably the most stable. Kernel32.dll is a dynamic link library file used by the 32-bit side of the Window ME operating system. Kernel32.dll is corrupted (it happens in windows 2000, too). Quick fix: and log on to Microsoft's Windows Update site. Click and the web site will "read" the ME installation to see which updates need to be applied. Download and install the latest/newest "critical update" package. Each "critical update" package has a copy of kernel32.dll. Else, you can the Windows ME CD for kernel32.dl_ and then run EXPAND to the file location on the CD, which will install a fresh copy on your hard drive.
