Don't be afraid to be honest. I desired a better curled hair look, with a flat top. Using only Poser Primitives and an existing Blonde Map, this is take one of what I came up with. Buffy (Neo-Durga for the Lawyers) models the proposed Hair piece.

Kiera ( ) posted Wed, 09 January 2002 at 7:09 PM

Disturbingly, this actually has potential if you used smaller primitives. Right now it looks bizarre, but the idea is clever. ;) Dayam, she really does look just like Buffy. er, I mean Neo-Durga.

Cin- ( ) posted Wed, 09 January 2002 at 7:31 PM

I agree with kieraw, this is a really good start, but I'd like to see it with smaller curls, and transmapped so that it didn't look so sectionalized...

Photopium ( ) posted Wed, 09 January 2002 at 7:32 PM

Yeah, sigh...I was trying to go for the "Big Curl" look, I was afraid if I went smaller with the primitives I'd end up with a poodle look. Perhaps a real hair person could give big curls a go, with a flat top, and not symmetrical. -WTB

melanie ( ) posted Wed, 09 January 2002 at 7:37 PM

Actually, it's quite an idea. I agree about the huge curls, though. It looks like she has large hair rollers in her hair, setting the curls, and they need to be brushed out. If you play with the idea, though, I think you could come up with some interesting hair styles. Maybe, the idea could be experimented with by using exported rocks from Bryce or something with a more irregular shape than cyllinders or spheres. I hope you share some images of further studies with this. Melanie

AprilYSH ( ) posted Wed, 09 January 2002 at 7:46 PM

it's good, go with it, vary those primitives a bit. i am working on a similar project for males... shorter of course. it was harder than i thought and it may take forever and someone will get there before me but it's the journey that counts ;) by the way, one advantage of this method is relatively low poly count. Poppi was surprised when I said my spiral hair was only 2meg. i was surprised that is considered low?!? i think anything above 1meg is high... :)

Maybe some day I'll work up to putting something like this together, because I really do like the idea of it and the general look, it just needs some refining, and it's so not something I could do.

Cin- ( ) posted Wed, 09 January 2002 at 7:51 PM

And April's spiral hair is really well put together!

nikitacreed ( ) posted Wed, 09 January 2002 at 8:17 PM

What a cool idea! I think it looks great on Buf...I mean Neo-Durga! It does need some work....and I have no suggestions...cause I am an idiot. But I like the idea here! And April...the Spiral Curls ROCK girl!

VirtualSite ( ) posted Wed, 09 January 2002 at 8:29 PM

What if you applied a transparency mask to each of the primitives? It might make it less "up in rollers" looking, sort of like the huge architecture behind the new Michael Casual Hair.

Photopium ( ) posted Wed, 09 January 2002 at 8:33 PM

Hmmm, maybe. I'd be getting in over my head, I'm afraid. Maybe a good hair designer will see this thread and run with the idea (cough WTB Beta Tester cough). -WTB

rasputina ( ) posted Wed, 09 January 2002 at 9:02 PM

Wow, that Neo-Durga... :) The shape is nice, that would be nice a big curl look.

VirtualSite ( ) posted Wed, 09 January 2002 at 9:05 PM

I'd be getting in over my head, I'm afraid Nah. You can do it. Give it a shot. The transparency masks used on many of the current hair props would probably work just fine, but anything that goes from a solid mass at one end to a series of strands at the other would be an excellent place to start.

Anyone remember the "Wave" function? It's useful in distorting those sharp edges and introducing a bit of chaos into the mix. What do you think? Still working but wanted to show.

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Wed, 09 January 2002 at 9:37 PM

That's looking considerably better, even without trans or postwork. Can you apply the wave to just the curls, and not the section around the scalp?

Photopium ( ) posted Wed, 09 January 2002 at 9:48 PM

yep, working on it now, have some more demo pics shortly

JeffH ( ) posted Wed, 09 January 2002 at 9:56 PM

Well, now that SMG has a new bobbed haircut, what does it matter? :-)

Still Playing, generating Morphs and stuff for the piece I almost gave up on... Jeff_H: Bobbed Hair we've got, and lots of it. I like her new style, it's cute..not at all Felicity :)

VirtualSite ( ) posted Wed, 09 January 2002 at 10:24 PM

Yeah, its getting much better. It still might need something to visually soften it a bit, either a trans or a bump map -- the latter might also take the edge off the sense of masses more or less randomly placed. You might also look at a different texture map for the top-most pieces. The lighter center stripe seems to almost give away the structure of it, whereas something with a more consistent look might hide them a bit.

jamball77 ( ) posted Wed, 09 January 2002 at 11:00 PM

you could end up with a powdered wig look like this if you aligned the curles and made them smaller. cool idea!

Thanks for the encouragement, people! Here's some progress, and I'm kinda suprised how it's shaping up. There are about 10 Morph Targets, one to scramble the hair via wave, one to adjust mid, one for bangs, and then 6 or 7 styles. Fixing the tex was easy, and the transmap might be a little heavy-handed, more experimentation needed. Might go for a skull cap to combine with this prop for best results on the scalp. The Ponytail ends up being cheesy for the time being, but it wasn't really designed with ponytail in mind ;) How are we doing? -WTB

OOOOOH! I already want it! WOW! Damn William....that was some fast work! I love the Tied back and Loose and the Madrid! Keep it up!

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Wed, 09 January 2002 at 11:26 PM

This is amazing. You've put how much time into this?

Photopium ( ) posted Wed, 09 January 2002 at 11:30 PM

I believe I started this around six o'clock, as an experiment. That was 6.5 hours ago with a couple of breaks for cleaning, eating etc. Probably five hours all told, thus far. Thanks you two! I really am amazing myself, actually. I've been wanting hair like this since I first opened poser and here it is taking shape with no immediate signs of failure :D -WTB

Looking good! Like "tied back" and the front of the ponytail. As for the back view of the ponytail, looks like transmapping... maybe the morph is causing overlapping transmaps. "Up for anything" also has potential, might need a transmap on the parts sticking up to make the ends more realistic. But all much better than I could do!

VirtualSite ( ) posted Thu, 10 January 2002 at 12:32 AM

And you thought you were getting in over your head... =) Excellent work, bud. Its shaping up real pretty. The transparency map is a touch thin in a few places, but its all looking really nice.

Ms_Outlaw ( ) posted Thu, 10 January 2002 at 4:33 AM

Kind of neat seeing the beginning and seeing it take shape. It's looking really good William.

rasputina ( ) posted Thu, 10 January 2002 at 8:41 AM

wow, the tied back and madrid are particularly striking!
