Hi there, I get alot of inquiries on how to make birds for Poser. It isn't cake but not to hard really. The rotational order for the wings should be x(twist), y(extend/bend), z(flap/bend). My approach with my songbird was to use only two body parts for the wings since poser wings can't fold pretty anyway. This is because Poser only squishes and cannot slide the feathers under each other like cards in a deck. A work around is possible but the wings would have hundreds of body parts. Anyway, don't model one big clump for the wing. Make individual feathers and a basic arm to slide them into. Use diagrams from sites or books to make a wing that looks real. I obviously used a passerine(songbird) stucture for my songbird but the wing set up is usually very similar. Notice how the Inclusion/exclusion handlebars are set up(the red and green lines). MEMORIZE THIS: Everything inside green moves with the rotation. Everything outside of red does not. Everything between the two is deformed during the rotation. Keep repeating it and it will make sense. I know this is pretty advanced but save the diagram. It may come in handy. I will answer questions if you post them here. Anton PS:Other pictures of the wings bending and such can be seen in the ad images for it at daz. You might want to pluck those off the web too.

Was thinking it might help to see what is actually the bird's arm. Just think of that time you picked upp a chicken and made it dance before Mom cooked it. The feathers fit into this. Notice the bottom view on the left. The feathers there are the bottom most and are not interupted. The top view on the right shows all the other feather groups on top of those. As the horrified creator of those aweful wings on the Pink Pony I feel I have to clear my name since those nightmare wings are still being used 5 years later. Old meshes are like old loves. They come back to haunt you. Anton

I agreed with Anton's great explanation. I did kinda the same thing with my angel wings, and found some little problems when i was re-converting to poser. I found that there is a big limitation with poser :) Too bad that a child can't have 2 parented object, well I figured out how to fix that and now the wings move pretty good. Too bad I had to do it long time before this great Message Anton :) Best Regardings Virus

Hey Virus... Awsome looking wings yourself! Any chances of seeing them in the Market Place or Freebie section anytime?? -Lee

Actually things like wings might change soon. I recently figured out how to make stretchy long skirts in Poser. Ones that allow where the skirt to go to the ankle with both legs being fully bedable without that stiff Hip section skirts always have in the middle. I was able to create a "faux" circular ik chain. The skirt can assume the "down on one knee proposal" pose without morphs. I hope eventually the same technique can be applied in other ways such as batwing membranes, etc.

Pheonix, Would you mind explaining your circular IK? Sounds most interesting!!

lee: virus' wings have been freebies for YEARS. hmmm... but i think they were at props guild, and thus currently not available. :/ i disagree with not having 3 parts on your wings, anton. that drove me nuts with your bird ;) the problem with posing a wing to fold with poser is the middle section. because it bends 'forward' the poser joint causes the feathers to spread out instead of fold up, as they should. with the eagle, i've been working in using poser's joints to fold up the middle section and export it as a morph for use with the wing fold pose. still, they don't work perfectly.

I truly wish I had a clue what you all are talking about. LOL! But I will save this thread in Favorites for the day that I finally understand modeling. ;o) Thanks for sharing guys! (End of disruption caused to make sure I get email notifications on the thread. LOL!)
