Subject: Need Help on Poser 4 Render Hangs

Vanion ( ) posted Wed, 13 February 2002 at 11:23 AM · edited Mon, 06 January 2025 at 10:35 PM

I have read that there is a significant problem with Poser 4 hanging on renders when processing high-resolution texture materials, particularly when using the Victoria models from DAZ. I'm using the Poser 4 Pro Pack on a 1.0mhz Athlon processor, with 256 meg RAM, NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 video, under Windows 98se. I have yet to successfully render Vic2, yet I see the model used regularly in Renderosity with hi-rez textures on both the model and the prop elements, so there must be something I'm doing wrong. Any suggestions would be great. I've tried a memory management tool (MaxMem), rendering after a clean boot, and up-dating all video drivers. Am I missing anything? Thanks

?????????????
"... a 1.0mhz Athlon processor ..."

BOY! That's a "screamer!" ;=]

1.0 mhz? When was that built? Just curious.

(I don't have Vic2.) After upgrading to Pro-Pack, I usually have trouble when I try to render to a new window. Rendering to the main window works okay, though. If you've been trying to render to a new window, you could try rendering to the main window to see if it makes any difference. Good luck, Ericroy

"1.0 mhz" ---> I didn't even notice that. XT flashbacks or what :) I ment 1.0 gigahertz, but that what happens when there is too much blood in one's caffeine systm :)

Yup, I got that problem, also. ;=] Thanks for the chuckle. ;=]

I'm experiencing similar problems although I don't run Pro Pack. I can render Vicky2 with large maps but as I add more stuff to a scene the renders will hang. If I eliminate some texture or bump maps the scene will render properly. My theory is more memory. I'm able to render because I've got 512Mb. I've already bet money on this theory and if you wish I'll let you know if it helps when my memory upgrade arrives.

That would be great thanks. I'm surprised that 256meg is not enough. Are you using XP or 98SE? I've heard that XP is also better at managing memory than 98, so that may be a help as well.

I rendered scenes with Vicki and Mike in them, both using high-res textures and wearing several clothing items, on a Pentium II 266 with 128 MB of RAM. My swap file for Windows, however, was on a physically separate drive of it's own.

Byteherder ( ) posted Thu, 21 February 2002 at 8:25 PM

Yes I'm also surprised you can't render with 256mg. Although my hangs maybe memory related I can still render a lot. I can render vicky2 using Stefyzz Asia texture with clothing in a detailed room with about 20 props some of which have abusively large maps of their own. I'm running Windows ME on a 750mz PIII with 512mg ram. Poser and my swap file are on the same drive. I'd try to render with no maps. If you can't do that I'd say there is some other problem. If you haven't already try reinstalling vicky.

Lost my bet. More memory did not fix my hangs. Only removing maps seems to cure it. It appears I have bumped into some complexity/total mapping size limit in Poser itself.

Hello! I have that problem also, and for what I know, the problem resides in the way Win98 deals with memory. As far as i know you can have 1 gig of memory and still have problems. It seems the only solution to this problem is tweaking the registry file of windows, or upgrade the OS.

Very interesting - I have just recieved the same information from the nice folks at DAZ3D. I'm not really up to changing operating systems at this juncture, but if anyone has any ideas for how to tweek the registry - I'm all ears :) I've never played with the registry before, so this will be all new to me. BTW - thanks for all the posts offering ideas and suggestions. I'm VERY new to Poser, so having you guys around as a resource is wonderful :)
