Paint shop pro is a pretty versatile program and it's very cheap... If you look around, you can also find a cheap version of Photopaint 9, that is also a very good image editor, under $100 bucks... You can get older versions of photoshop, in closeout software places on teh web, like version 5.5 and 4 for very cheap too, like under $100 if you hunt around, they'll sell just the CD... But PSP is also a great program adn a well supported program...
As far as lighting books, those 2 books are really going to give you a lot of great info... The other thing is just experimenting with lighting yourself... The jeremy birn book is simpler, and does not have as many different lighting techniques, but is good... The other book is a little encyclopedic, but as you get towards the middle and end, he does a great job of different lighting techniques... The Owen book, although very good in what it teaches, I don't feel is as good for texturing as perhaps studying the susan kitchens book and getting good at the deep texture editor.... Also, studying tutorials on the web for texturing in Bryce... the DTE is a unique and powerful animal.. But it takes time to learn...
I own both the Birn,s book on Lighting and the Owen's book on Texturing and would recommend them both. My graphic editor of choice is PhotoImpact! I have PSP but never use it. Buying PSP- IMHO would be a step down from PhotoImpact...it's like PSP on steriods. I also have PS but, there again, rarely use it because I can do everything in PI with fewer clicks. LynnDee

Can anyone recommend books on these subjects. I am a beginner in that I have just used presets and dabbled alittle. There are two books I know of for lighting - "3D Lighting Techniques" by Arnold Gallardo (Charles River Media) and "3D Lighting and Rendering" by Jeremy Birn. For texturing, I only know of "Digital Texturing and Painting" by Owen Demers, et al. As far as software (in addition to Bryce 5)I have PhotoImpact 6. Will that do or do I need to invest in something like PSP? Thanks in advance for the input and advice, Chris
