Does anyone know how to clean up the paths in a zip file before extracting files? I am so tired of opening up a zip file only to find the paths set to:

itemname(or artistname)/poser4/runtime/library/etc, etc.

This has happened with zips in the Marketplace as well as the free section here and elsewhere. It's frustrating to have to clean that up.

I just unzip new items with broken paths to a separate directory, then drag runtime on top of my runtime directory. Yeah, it's really irritating. =)

Yes, very irritating. Even though they put in a new policy to make all the zip files conform to a standard, they never did ask us merchants to go back and fix the old files. At least, no one ever asked me. Now we're so used to them all working properly, when we hit an old one, it makes things head-achey. I don't know how to fix an existing one, except to extract it, fix the file structure, and re-compress it... which kind of defeats the purpose. Unless you archive your files, in which case it might be nice to fix them for yourself before burning them to a CD. Kellee

As far as I know, there is no way to fix it within the existing ZIP. You have to use one of the above two options. Or you can select the groups of file from within WinZip and, with Explorer open, drag each group into their proper directory.

That's what I was afraid of but I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one this bugs. :) Yeah, I've unzipped to a folder and then re-zipped and then unzipped, etc, ad nauseum. I just hate doing it.

Thanks.

I would like to know how to get those paths into a zip in the first place. There was a thread a day or so ago telling people to put the paths into the zips so they don't have to manually place each item, and I don't know how to do that. Also, for those folks who do include the paths (this is basically the same thing that Kendra is saying), please begin the path with Runtime, leaving off any other words or symbols in front of it. That's the easiest to install. All I have to do is unzip it into my Poser directory and everything goes to the right place. Thanks, Kendra, for this thread. I've been silently griping about the same thing for along time. Melanie

There should be a dialogue box for "store relative path" "store absolute path" somewhere in your archiving program. I'm using WinRAR to make my zip files, so my exact way of doing it probably won't help you. I believe R'osity has a tutorial on setting up zips for the marketplace that would be perfect, problem is the only link I know of is at the top of the entrance to the Merchant's forum... which is not accessable unless you're already selling something! Hold on, I'll see if I can copy and paste the link. http://www.renderosity.com/index.ez?viewLink=344 Hopefully that link works.

I use WinZip to zip up my files. I'll try the link. Thanks. Melanie

And there are some of us who don't like predetermined paths at all. We'd rather place the files according to our own system.

Tilandra ( ) posted Sun, 31 March 2002 at 11:54 PM

You would then unzip the files with a "don't use paths" box checked. Tilandra

Ooh, you set upon one of my pet peeves as well... For packageing though I have a runtime folder setup on my desktop, whjen I package for a download I copy my folders into the appropriate matching folder - eliminate or add folders as needed and zip it up. I also keep all my readme's in a folder with the company name and each readme file has the product/download name on it now. Those read me's that overwrite each other drive me crazy as well.
