Subject: Where's Renderotica?

DTHUREGRIF ( ) posted Fri, 26 April 2002 at 2:23 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 10:40 AM

Hi folks. For any of you who are wondering why you can't get to Renderotica right now, I wanted to let you know that Verisign had some kind of screw up with their database and that's affecting our domain name. It may take them 24-48 hours to totally fix this. (No, I am NOT a happy camper). Please check back with us frequently, because different areas will resolve at different times. Thanks, Diane

Thanks for bringing us up to speed.

Yes, thanks for the heads-up. I am plannning to visit this evening, and would have been a bit 'bent' if access was not available and I didn't know why. Now I'll know to engage the 'patience' gear first. :)

I only ask becouse thet sent me a bill in the mail to reneiw my domain name, and when I contacted my host(because they pay for that as long as they hold my account) I was told they had me registered through a different outfit. anyone know who they are, or have received a bill from them?

Entropic ( ) posted Fri, 26 April 2002 at 6:44 PM

Verisign's a domain registry servicem 4P. They also do security certification and some other stuff. Everyone I know has their DNS entry registered through them, so it's not a big surprise. ;) Paul

I dunno but Verisign seems to be sending out "bills" to anyone with a domain name, whether they're registered through Verisign or not. They've done it with 3 of my domains. Pretty tacky, if you ask me.

Verisign seems to be domain slamming - like the long-distance phone slamming a few years back (in the US). so be careful

I'lll look into it.

Wow. Having my domain registered through Verisign, I'd like to know what you folks find out. If Verisign's using bad business tactics, I might have to take my business elsewhere.

Freakachu ( ) posted Fri, 26 April 2002 at 11:10 PM

Verisign bought out a number of domain registration sights, including the one I signed up with, Registrars.com, so that might be why they're bothering you. I didn't want my domain name to become another porn portal, so I reregistered it last weekend.

Actually, VeriSign is just using bad business practices to gain customers. Basically, they got many, many addresses on domain names (regardless of who they were registered with), and sent those addresses little cards saying that users needed to renew their domain names with (of course) VeriSign, and didn't make it clear that this was just a scam to get more money. Entropic - It's, of course, up to you, but I would most certainly recommend dropping VeriSign like a bad habit, and going with someone else. If you do decide to do this, might I suggest GoDaddy.com. The company name is a little strange, but they provide exactly the same thing that VeriSign provides at a third of the price. Plus, they are all fine, upstanding people. Aaron

I can tell you that Verisign has the worst customer service I have ever dealt with. You can always get ahold of someone, but they seldom can do anything for you. They made this mistake with my domain name (something about it disappearing or being wrong in the whois database) and now it will take 24-48 hours to get fixed??!?!? And all I got as I went up the line was the same answer. There's nothing we can do. I also got into an argument with them when I changed the ownership on my domain. The registration was due and their checkout online wouldn't let me proceed to change the name unless it was paid up. So I paid online. THEN (and only then) as I went through the system, it said that I could be charged again after the ownership change. I figured since I had just paid for 2 years they wouldn't chage me. WRONG! They tried to bill me again. I tried to discuss it with about 4 different people who just kept telling me that since I was a new owner, I had to pay. Finally I had to call AMEX and tell them the first charge was unauthorized. Then I tried to pay online for the two years (they were having a promotion at the time for 2 years for $56. And they've always given you 10% off for paying for 2 years). The system wouldn't let me. I had to call them up with the invoice they mailed me and do it over the phone. Now this invoice billed me for $70. No 10% off for 2 years, no promotional price. I argued with them for an hour and finally gave up. But as soon as I find a registrar that I feel comfortable with, I will switch. I will not be doing any more business with these people.

These people are also responsible for some of those irritating pop-up ads. I suspect there is a correlation between pop-up ads and outfits with bad business practices (like online casinos). Maybe we should start a league to boycott all businesses that employ pop-up ads?

I'm just glad that rotica hasn't vanished into the night forever, that would be a big loss to everyone in the poser community especially me as it was the first site I found when I got started on poser. Good luck with getting the problems fixed. see you on the net again real soon.

Well, after several more phone calls to Verisign (where I again got a different story, BTW!) by me AND my host, we're back up!!!! The thing that really bothers me about this whole debacle is that every time I called (even after they had admitted to my host it was their problem), they told me it was the host's problem. When I called back again for the second time and offered to email the results of the query my host ran showing that the problem was on their end, I got bumped to a supervisor who then finally said he'd escalate it to Registry. still never admitting that it was their problem. Only that they didn't know how to deal with it. Now if I had had a host that wasn't as knowledgeable or as willing to crawl up their @**es (on a Friday night), I'd still be down. My thanks to shocking.com. These guys are terrific!!!!

glad to see you back, and knickers to Verisign for causing so much hassle

duanemoody ( ) posted Sun, 28 April 2002 at 12:41 AM

I have my domains registered with dotster.com and godaddy.com. I heard enough horror stories about verisign to avoid them altogether. dotster behaves ethically and offers what you'd expect for the price.
