Subject: Okay, here's an idea to change the gallery.

After reading Jordy's post an old idea I once had came back to me & now I think it might be a good time to post this here. The thing is the difference in photography - people here in this forum, and others taking part in the contest everytime really make great photos...no matter how skilled they are, cause everybody does their best & tries to learn from eachother and from the feedback they get. Now on the other hand there are people (and there's nothing wrong with that - don't misunderstand) who post other kind of work....more like snapshots of friends, family or whatever. Since the photography is a pretty busy place and it gets busier all the time, feedback and ratings are getting less & less - which in my view is a shame. So my first idea is this: for those who don't know the site photo.net, this photography site has a specific forum for photography critisism/feedback only. With this in mind, I was thinking if we couldn't have two seperate photographt galleries....one as a general photography gallery, where people post anything they want, 3 shots a day and another gallery specifically for posting work you want to be 'reviewed' (and ratedd) by others, giving this gallery a fairly serious character (so that the feedback on our photos becomes a bit more serious too, as well as the ratings....for those who like to be rated), with the restriction of only one post a day, to keep the amount of photos fairly low. The fun part of that might be that a top20, ratings or the amount of views won't any longer be based on the amount of nudeness in your photo or a provoking title or whatever reason that's got nothing to do with the photo itself.

You know I think I saw a discussion in one of the other forums about a gallery just for critiques....although I think the people discussing it were talking more for 3d and other such images. If I can find the thread maybe I'll post the link to it......might of been in community ideas or offtopic forum.

Thats not a bad idea, but my problem is there are so many postings I just dont have the time to cruise through the galleries anymore. I dont even get to the forum everyday, which is a drag. A critique gallery would be interesting, and it would probably make what little time I seem to have these days more quality time. One problem I see is that not everyone would understand the concept, but I guess that happens anyway.

I think in a way we already have this; folks post to the Gallery to a general audience, and to the Forum for more in depth discussion. We've set up two contest areas for people (who judge for themselves) who they want to compete against. As for the volume to sort through, I for one would not be skilled enough to say to anyone, "Sorry, your 'snapshot' does not live up to the standards of this Gallery, post over in the non-serious section." [Please, not trying to flame. You have made a considered, well structured argument, and I appreciate your point.] What I really like about Gallery posting is that the work is then indexed, and one can later look through all the work from various media, and see how the talent is progressing. I know the Forum threads are archived, but it would be nice to have a check-box to send an image to the Gallery. We are starting to pay the price of success. Both the Gallery and Forum are growing, with folks of various skill levels. I find some of the snapshots refreshing. The dissapointing thing is that it is getting too big to give all the newbees personal attention, and I am afraid they are losing interest and leaving. Some very good suggestions for Challenges have been coming into the Forum, 'cept that we've done them already. [I also have seen some very talented folks dissapearing, which dissapoints me (maygen, darkpen, cat?). I switch from media to media, and maybe that is what is happening.] Maybe by writing this out I am actually coming around to your point of view, Rork. Perhaps we need a separate something to support beginners?

Oh btw, I think I forgot to point out that I didn't mean an extra gallery for 'higher quality work', or whatever that might be :) But just a seperate forum for anyone who'd like to have some serious feedback....or any other way to split up the huge photography gallery. I noticed that there are so many photos posted, while hardly any gets any feedback anymore. Ofcourse it's just a wild guess, but it seems that the whole gallery is just too big & stuff goes back a few pages within a day. Well, maybe instead of a critque forum just different categories perhaps....don't really know, but at least ratings/viewings wouldn't be dominated anymore by shots called 'hot pussy' and stuff like that (FYI that was a photo of a cat on a stove :) Anyway, what I'm trying to say is that like with 3D you have galleries for every 3d program plus animation, while with photography there's just one big mess of (beautiful) photos :) Hmmmmm....okay, what about the photo.net categories: Photography: Nature Photography: Pets Photography: Street Photography: Events Photography: Architecture Photography: Montage/Digital Alterations Photography: Other Or Photography: Nature Photography: Animals Photography: People Photography: Urban Photography: Montage Photography: Other Well....it's just a rough idea :)

I like the idea of a critique forum, I know we do that here but it might be good to know when people really want feedback other than the "wow that's cool!" variety & get some discussion going. I think with seperate categories in the gallery you always miss something that crosses over, & time to get round them would be a big problem, I have a job keeping up with photo' & 2D as it is!

Both Bev and Misha make good points. I frequently hang at the 2D forum because that's the medium i work most in. I post to the "gallery" stuff that i want in my "Artist Page", and I post to the "forum" stuff i want critiqued by fellow artist's whose work and opinions i respect. I haven't posted here in this forum because i don't quite feel up to the caliber of work that most of you's can do...

I guess there's no easy way around, because WHEN do you decide you are no longer a newbie?

Rork, I agree, there is a BIG difference between "taking" a picture and "making" a picture. The problem is what would be the criteria to decide where you stand, and where to post??

pesonaly, If I really wanna get feedback on something, I'll post it in a forum. The galleries are aplace where people clickfor the T&A, and only comment and vote for their friends and whatnot (I know, the only time i get comments is from you guys after I post a messagesaying, GO CHECK OUT MY IMAGE!! Message671422.jpg ). then again, to each his own. I always thoughtthat if you say "Please provide serious feedback," you'll get serious feedback. As for photo.net, that entire site is devoted to photography. I personally prefer the community there is here, and I'm not too into photo anymore, only once in awhile (though I'll pick up again when Univeristy starts), so photo.net is a little much for me. Plus, even there, it seems that it would take a very long to build up a respectable name, while here, you can say "Hey I'm new, what's up?" and peop[le wil respond. Why?Because we aren't assholes. guppo coming soon to a gallery near you... ry disappears again.... ---

This seems like a neat idea, if everyone goes by the guidelines. "serious" is a relative term. plus, IMO, even if you put up a separate forum or gallery for serious critiques, there will still be your regular moron netizens who do not read the fine print (nor the large bold letters). (*

Thanks for taking it up in such a positive way =) I'm really curious if there's a way to make viewing new photos easier...maybe categories isn't a solution either. Not sure. But you're all right - we're all in this together, no matter what kind of experience you got, so no 'really good work' and 'really bad work' galleries ;) I was thinking more in terms of 'want to share' and 'dying to know how to improve' or something. Please keep on 'brain storming'.... =)

I WAS posting to the gallery, BUT wasn't gettin' the FEEDBACK there...so I've turned to the forum because I'm still pretty much learnin' this stuff....when I want some advice... I come HERE!...cause I know you guys will give me just that! I agree with what was said above that pix are posted SO FAST in the gallery that some REALLY GREAT STUFF gets LOST in the MIX. Also Slynkster... you're right on about the so called "T&A" stuff thats runs rampant thru the gallery...one of my FIRST POSTS...no thumbnail...just a "suggestive title" and that pix got over 200 hits the first day!...I actually posted that as a joke and to prove this very point! I'm not sure what we can do...But for me...this forum is it for now! I love comin' here and sharin with you guys! I'm open for any change or improvements that come down the pike! L8r! L8r!
