Subject: WinXP and Tailor problem?

jelisa ( ) posted Sun, 12 May 2002 at 7:10 PM · edited Wed, 07 August 2024 at 10:42 PM

I was wondering if anyone else has had a problem with The Tailor and WinXP Pro? My computer kept rebooting itself and after analyzing the error reports, Microsoft said that it was a conflict with a dll or driver from a program I had installed. They said I should uninstall any programs I had recently installed and see if that solved the problem. The only program I had installed recently was The Tailor, so I uninstalled it and since then, no reboots. I wanted to see if I was the only one having this problem before I reported it. TIA, -darlisa

I use it with XP Home and have no problems at all.

I never had any problems. I have Tailor and Windows XP Home edition. Heck, I recently reinstalled everything on my computer, and didn't have any problems then. Have you updated Windows XP?! The first thing I advise, even on a fresh Windows install, is to go directly to the Windows Update site, and install all updates. Then be sure to have all the updates for your other hardware and software. Good luck. Message671414.jpg

This is a clean install of WinXP, on a new disk, and it is the Pro version. All recommended XP updates have been made as well as all updates for all the programs I use. -darlisa

Have you contacted Codetwister, visited the site, and read any docs?! Does your list of updated software include Internet Explorer? Have you updated all your hardware drivers?! Have you called your computer manufacturer? So far no one else has this problem, so it leaves us to wonder what is different about your setup that might cause the problem. Message671414.jpg Ron

i haven't checked out tailor but if you're running xp you can run a problem program in compatiblity mode for a previous version of windows. if tailor is not specifically designed for xp you could try that. Message671410.jpg

ronknights ( ) posted Mon, 13 May 2002 at 12:59 AM

OUCH, no it's not necessary to use compatibility mode.

scifiguy ( ) posted Mon, 13 May 2002 at 1:40 AM

Yeah, its really not because plenty of people are using it on XP. You know, I wonder if it is a conflict with your video card. What do you have, and have you verified you have an XP compatible driver for it?

I believe this reboot problem was addressed with a Windows XP update.... This is a known issue. I've seen it addressed. I searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base (link provided), and got no satisfaction. I know this is not a Tailor issue. *** I know you're having troubles, but you need to help us. You could find out exactly which dll is involved in that error. That way we'd have one more clue to use in a search for the problem or solution. You should also talk to Codetwister. As the author of the software, he might already know what to do. Ron ![Message671422.jpg](http://www.renderosity.com/photos/Message671422.jpg)

If you are using Norton AntiVirus or possibly any other AV, I know a while back there was an update that was causing a reboot after restarting the computer and it was a continuous loop, the fix had something to do with changing the timing of your startup programs, apparently the antivirus and something else were trying to load immediately on boot up, and right about the time you got into a windows screen the PC would reboot continuously. Just a thought, since many Antivirus programs autoupdate when you are online. Usually a small proggie like the Tailor wouldn't cause a reboot on its own, but could possibly have replaced a file with its own version. Best bet would still be to contact Code Twister since its his baby, he knows it better than the rest of us educated speculators.

It is most likely the video card. If I remember right I think you have to have the open GL driver for your video card. The standard driver for Windows XP does not have them. However if you update your XP it will tell you if there is a driver and get it for you.

Scifiguy and starmkr: I updated my video driver last night, so I'll reinstall Tailor and see if that makes a difference. Ron: There were no error messages, nothing, so I can't tell you which dll or driver was causing the problem. I built the computer, so there's no manufacturer to contact. If the video driver update works, then I won't have to contact Codetwister, otherwise, he's next on my list. I just wanted to see if you guys had any ideas before I went to him. Thanks for the help and I'll post a message if it works, but may be a few days before I know for sure. -darlisa

Darlisa, I wish you all the best. Don't you hate it when you build a computer, and have no one else to ask for tech support? I get overwhelmed at my house sometimes. I run a small network for my wife and myself.. and geesh, I don't know it all, grin. Do you have an antivirus program? Which one is it? Have you updated that? You might consider the CNet Catchup site. You can give permission to have your computer scanned, and see what updates are available. I think it is both hardware and software. Good luck! ![Message671414.jpg](http://www.renderosity.com/photos/Message671414.jpg)

Thanks, Ron. I've scanned for viruses and it says I'm clean. I reinstalled Tailor after updating my video driver and am waiting to see what happens. Thanks to everyone for all your assistance. Keeping fingers crossed ... -darlisa

Well, it's been two days and no reboots ... -dar

That's good news darlisa :) Glad you got it worked out. Reminder: XP stupidly sets refresh rates very low (no more "optimal" setting...thanks Bill), and tends to reset them if you install a new driver. Check your display refresh rate to be sure its as fast as your computer supports to prevent eye strain.

Darlisa!!! It sounds like you're "good as gold!" Yippee!!! Message671422.jpg Ron
