Subject: WIP Texture Set

Greetings, I am working on a texture set for the Ronin Outfit, from the members area of poserstyle.com. I am not sure what I am going to do with this set once done. So far I have 9 different textures for the outfit, the 4 shown in the image I am attaching here, and 5 more not shown (Tan, Red & Black, Dark Blue, Dark Brown and Purple are not shown). I do not know how many people have this outfit, how many would be intertested in textures for it, and also this is my 1st textures set ever. I have done some small things for myself to use but never before anything that I might let others have or that I might sell. I need to know what others think of these so far. I also would like to know about how many more textures, and ideas of colors you all would like to see for it. Please be honest, but a bit kind as this is my 1st attempt at a texuture set and I am very proud. I will show more of the texures soon. Many thanks. BTW these textures are just for the clothes not the Char., hair or staff. (Boots, belt, panties, vest, jacket, and headband textures only)

Here is a quick image showing the other 5 textures I almost have done. No post work on either image other than putting all images together in one.

The dark blue texture needs to be "centered" to be more effective. It is a nice color (one of my favorites) but patterns ought to line up or be symmetrical on both sides of the body. You have a nice array of colors, but not really of textures (thinking of the tactile sense of various materials). If one of these looked quilted and one looked like leather and one looked like lizard or alligator skin, you would have a nice variety. (Bump maps can achieve much of this look, without affecting color at all.) If that works for you, and you want to go a little bit further, you can try out Traveler's tutorial on reflection maps (morphworld3.0), and maybe do something special for the belt or front flap. These are all meant as friendly suggestions for making them better. :) Carolly

Thank you for your comments. I have thought I might try to make a few bump maps, but I will admit I have never made any before. I tried to make them look like different things like leather, cloth ect but the images above have been resized so much is hard to see. As for not being centered most of that is due to her pose, if you look she has one leg posed bent and out further then the other. As for reflection maps I might try but again that is something I have not done. These are still a WIP and might be some time before done. All comments are welcome, (as long as no one tries to rip me totally apart lol).

I'd add a dark but brighter red to mix and match as that always makes a set very useful. It looks good. There are quite a few free bumpmaps out there that could be used with your set once it's out so I'm not worried about bumps. I like what I can see of the texture except for the pale blue one-- it looks a bit blurry. Maybe too large?? But the tan and aqua set is great! The tan looks like leather. the lilac looks like silk! The symmetry Carolly means is the lines of the pattern-- they really do look off center in the back up at the neck as well, in the dark blue and the loincloth of the lavendar where one would expect the center of that stripe to hit the v of the belt. I love these textures! If you were to do reflects at all-- I would suggest the loin cloths which would flash nicely. [download some free reflection maps-- Traveler has some== and see how they are put together. Doesn't look hard] Otherwise, these, just tidied up a bit, look everybit as good as the Archer textures in the MP. Emily I wanta use them!!

Greetings, Thank you both for your comments. These textures are not done yet. I am looking over all comments and will see what else I can do and add to the set I am thinking about makeing at least three more textures for this set, not sure I will make bumps or reflection maps at this time. But will make mat files before I am done as well as some minor changes, addtions and try to make a few more options for some of the textures already done, like a brown belt for the brown sets, ect, to give a bit more varity to the set. I am making these all by hand not useing anything other then a few tubes from a site that said they were able to be used for all things, will be emailing the creator of the said tubes soon just to be nice and double check, and useing PSP and plug in filters all else hand painted. Any ideas of color choises, little details to change and add to are more then welcome. I do hope to have this set done by the end of this week if not sooner. I am still unsure what I will do with them, for it would be nice to make a bit of money to help my poser cost (only around 5 to 8 bucks for the set) but might do them as free if not to many are willing to buy them and cause is my 1st texture set, will wait and see what others think 1st :) You have been very helpful and I will keep working on them and get some more and better images of them up as soon as I can. I would buy them, if that helps at all. Here's how I look at a texture package for clothing-- if I can use even 50% of it It's worth it. And I can already see, I can use 75% of your choices. Not to mention adding them onto other items. By the way, the way your making textures is the way I'm planning to start, if I ever have a good day and a complete brain cell to start it with. They look good to me. I would add one thing, if it's not horribly tough. I would offer-- like a bonus-- three extra strap textures for the staff. A Red one, a pastel [aqua?] and maybe a tan, or dark blue. This is if it isn't horribly difficult. Don't have to redo the wood, just something that ties in with your other color schemes. And make sure people know it's a bonus. Emily Good luck

One thing I noticed about these sets, that hasn't been mentioned, is that you tend to make one clothing object one texture. Why not break the jacket up to have different colors on the yoke, shoulderpieces, skirting and so forth? Mind you, the seams on the sides (assuming this thing is mapped as most are) may prove to be annoying. Some of the other pieces could benefit from this as well. I'd advise against putting patterns next to each other - but solid colors with patterns would be lovely. Also, many asian style garmentsa have a fairly large design in the center of the back - the brown and green ones could have a tree, the black could have a red flame and so on. For example - the 2nd image, bottom right (with the dark pattern) If you made the shoulder caps that blue, with maybe a 'piping' of the brown, and then added a strip of the brown with blue piping to the vertical hem of the skirt. That would bring the colors in that pattern out a bit more, and make for more visual interest. That wide belt could use some decoration - making it look like tooled leather or adding metallic or jeweled panels might be interesting. Of course these are also very nice as is :) Although I would check the alignment of the textures on the back. That center slit is landing offcenter - it might just be the render, but most people prefer large patterns like that to be centered. Which, BTW, annoys costumers like me to no end. sigh And I guess I might as well mention that there's a texturing forum, where you can bug other texturers :) Good luck, and keep up the good work :) Lyrra
