Subject: What's up with this Spring Cleaning stuff?

Menno ( ) posted Mon, 14 February 2000 at 5:41 PM · edited Mon, 09 December 2024 at 11:59 PM

Getting 13 mails about a Spring Cleaning of Renderosity. But also with replies in them from others like: "Private Message from AofD: I imagine you get this a lot... But what would I have to do to get a link to my site on the Renderosity sidebar? If I need to contact someone else to get my link added please tell me.... My site is now finally starting to get bi" So what is this all about? Menno

I got it, too, but it was all in HTML code and I had to fish through all the gibberish to find the message. I can't understand why I got this. I visit this site at least twice a day, everyday. It's not like I've been away for a while and my membership would be in question. I'm confused. One message to anyone sending e-mails: Please don't use fancy backgrounds or HTML coding in e-mails. My computer doesn't like it. It comes in looking like heiroglyphics. I hope my membership isn't in danger of being deleted. I'm a daily visitor here. Melanie

I think this is in reference to something Jack or Ed posted over a month ago. They were going to send a blanket email to all registered members stating that if they wanted to remain registered, then to visit the site. If they didn't then their registration would be purged--but could always be reinstated simply by reregistering. I got only 2--one for renderosity and one for renderotica--since they are kept separate now as they said. They wanted to know the REAL membership numbers for one thing, I believe. I BET others are 'responding' where it said to absolutely not--to contact Jack for anything (and that's throwing a monkey wrench into the whole 'blanket' mail out). Nothing was to be done with the emails. Well, I'm sure someone will check this thread out soon and explain--but I do remember that they said they were going to do this--right here on this forum. I meant to say, also, that they didn't segregate out who visits daily and who doesn't I don't think--I suspect that would be too difficult. Don't know why you got html Melanie--mine was in plain text. That will be interesting to figure out. I can read html in email (esp. now since I just installed Win98 this weekend) but I don't like it. My old Eudora hated it LOL--and I might very well go back to Eudora--I'm not sure I love Outlook Express. Diane B

quesswho ( ) posted Mon, 14 February 2000 at 11:56 PM

Melanie, It seems to me when you register there is a box you check that states whether you want email in text or html. I might have this site confused with another and if so I am sorry but I quess it wouldn't hurt to check it out. Marge

edarsenal ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2000 at 12:06 AM

it seems it gets worse than gibberish and colored backgrounds. We sent out a simple form letter to help us find out an exact membership count as diane spoke of. And now, we have received a number of emails saying that there was porno images or banners connected to it. SOMETHING WE NEVER WISHED TO HAVE WITHIN IT!!! i do sincerely apologise for any offense, as well as any confusion it has caused! This is a very terrible and unintentional occurrance. We do not know HOW it occurred and it is being looked into. Once we find out the exact cause, we will let you all know. Till that time, again, i am, as is all of us here at Renderosity VERY SORRY that what should have been a simple form letter to do an accurate membership count became a garbled letter with adult banner ads. Please be patient as we correct this. again, i am SORRY for any trouble this has caused any of you out there. ed arseneault Admin and Vice President

wyrwulf ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2000 at 12:09 AM

I got the plain and simple text message from both Renderosity and Renderotica. There have been no others arriving in my mail box (as of yet), so it worked properly for some of us.

edarsenal ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2000 at 12:15 AM

also, so you all know. this is not a threat of removal if you do not patronize. Simply cleaning up old, dead memberships and this was the best way to do it. it was strange to hear that you got 13 menno, and i personally apologise to you for that. as well as to you melanie. Please, no one's membership is being threatened or in danger. this was meant as a quick census and nothing more.

Eshal ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2000 at 1:47 AM

Ed, I don't think myself or indeed most of the users here would hold you and the rest of the team responsible. After all you guys have worked at to get this site to where it is it really would be totally nonsensical for you to do this to yourselves at this stage. Why it would be like cutting your hand off instead of manicuring your nails :) Hope you find the end of this mystery soon. Regards Eshal

Anthony Appleyard ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2000 at 2:07 AM

I received just the 2 messages, in plain text at home, and in HTML format will full colored background and Renderotica sidebar and header at work. When I read a message, my Pegasus for Windows at work displays HTML as gibberish text if I come to it by "go to next message", but lets me call my WWW reader to read it if I click it in the folder contents list. At work the text of the Renderotica message was incomplete. Please, plain ascii text only next time!

MartinC ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2000 at 3:09 AM

Why the heck is nobody telling us - NOW !? In the past, even for minor complaints about... some boards... we got official threads by the admin(s) in all forums here explaining details. Why does the team send out e-mails like this at all, without posting a thread BEFORE (HERE!!) telling: We are now going to do this & that today - if you are a regular member then don't panic. Instead they leave us in confusion, and we have to work out ourselves if this whole rubbish is OFFICIAL at all...!??? Not very amused, MartinC

picnic ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2000 at 6:58 AM

Martin--they did say this about a month ago. It was discussed several times--I think on this board-that they were going to do a census. Maybe they should have said they were sending out emails yesterday, but any of us on this board should have figured it out pretty easily. If all you have to do is 'visit' the site (thus sending your registered name and password to the server) that isn't any big deal. Many said they come every day--so come, and that's it. The worse situation is those who received emails with HTML and banners. Now THAT's something to clear up. I received just 2--one from each site and in text. If one email was sent out, it makes one wonder why some received plain text and others received with background and banners?!? There aren't too many of us in here being upset about this, so I'm assuming that most just took it as exactly what it was--a way to get the numbers right. Diane B

melanie ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2000 at 7:50 AM

Diane, I installed Win98 just before New Years. I still got this message in HTML code. Weird. I'm not sure what that was. :-) Melanie

nandus ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2000 at 7:52 AM

I received 2 emails - one for each site - and except for that weird AofD headline I had no trouble reading them.

Stormrage ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2000 at 8:12 AM

ed I got both messages from Renderotica and from Renderosity both in html. The one from Renderotica had the html for the top and sidebars, and the adult banner. The one from Renderosity had the html for the top and one of the normal Renderosity banners on it. I like the templates but maybe next time you should send either only text or send emails out without the banners.. maybe those who got the adult banners also got the renderotica email as well? Storm

picnic ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2000 at 8:22 AM

You're exactly right Melanie. I couldn't find any options for the form your messages will take in Win 98's Outlook Express. I had chosen 'text only' for sending and thought there might be something like that for receiving in OE, but there isn't. Its just strange that some received it in one form and others in another form, doesn't it? If I can receive HTML also, then why didn't I? S 'Inquiring minds want to know'. Diane B

Thanks diane for sticking around and helping to aid others in this. You ARE a sweetheart. Thanks eshal for your understanding. It is greatly appreciated. Martin C. i do apologize for the confusion. We did speak of this awhile back. perhaps a second more recent one to let everyone know would have been more advisable. Sorry. Anthony, that is very weird. Everyone, we sent out two text letters. one for the members here, and another for those who visit our sister site. It was a simple concensus taking project. Nothing more. No ulterior motives or threat to visit us or die BS. Those of you who know us, know that is not our style. What is most horrible, is that somehow, an unknown amount recieved html and banner ads WITH the sent text. That is screwed up and we are working to find out WHY so that it will not happen again. Again, i sincerely apologize for this!!!! :( ed

Check your membership profiles and disable the e-mail updates button or change the HTML button to Plain text. -Jeff H.

Menno ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2000 at 11:09 AM

Ed, thanx for explaining. I understood the reason for "why" this is done. Just was confused with the 13 mails, the strange banners and the replies in the mails. It wasn't clear at all that it was for Rendersity and Renderotica. But no harm done ;o} Menno

edarsenal ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2000 at 11:46 AM

thanks menno for understanding. still, this stinks on high. We don't operate like this and do greatly apologize for it. A possible reason for your original multiple message and email was others unnecesarily responding to it. So far, we have determined that the program we use had some sort of "hiccup". Clicking on an option that was originally turned off. The option was: Adding a Front Page to the text letter. For whatever reason as yet, undetermined, the program turned the option back on, resulting in the present SNAFU! Again, i sincerely apologize for the inconveince this as caused to all of you. SO VERY SORRY! ed

edarsenal ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2000 at 12:30 PM

To ensure this doesn't happen again, we have removed that option from our mailing program so that now only text letters and nothing but text letters go out. SORRY BOUT THIS, EVERYONE!!

This is for ( Nobody ) the author of the two messages I recieved last night. Since I can't find this Nobody in any search I do but Nobody seems to speak for both this forum and the adult forum I'll put this message here. I was under the impression that your adult forum was turned into a seperate entity so to speak. Yet I see that I'm considered a member there? I've never visited the site so why am I a member of it? Is it a case where If I belong to this forum I also belong to that one as well? What gives??? Thanks in advance Nobody. DM aka Nite Miner

edarsenal ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2000 at 2:16 PM

Renderotica is a seperate site. The memberships are seperate. There should not have been crossovers between the two memberships. I can and will delete your accidental membership to Renderotica if you so desire, Nite Miner and apologize for the inconveince. This was one of the reasons for the spring clean. To clear up such things. Feel free to email your request or simply state it here and i will take care of it. edarsenal@aol.com Also, the Nobody was used because it was an informative letter and not one that needed to be responded to. Jack did place his own email at the bottom in case questions or problems occurred. If anyone else has this problem, please email me and i will rectify it. Thank you. ed

DM1234 ( ) posted Tue, 15 February 2000 at 2:45 PM

Yes I would like to be removed from the members list of Renderotica. As for the Nobody. I thought it kind of funny as being used as the name of the author. My responding to Nobody was my poor attempt at wry humor. :) Thanks for taking care of this Ed. Dave---DM aka Nite Miner

Ed is absolutely right. I should had put a smiley or something to signify I had writen it with humorous intent. I apologize for this error. calandil, I know what you mean. A year ago I had what was a very good thing in my life get destroyed by something said through e-mail getting twisted and distorted. Dave
