Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Feb 03 12:46 am)
Emily Render time is a variable that hard to figure out. You had to rememeber that in Poser more is slower, more lights, more objects, more textures size, and more figures. Now hardware, more is faster, more CPU MHz, more Ram, more Hard Drive (size and type), and operating system (win98 vs Win2k vs XP vs MacOs). So more you want the more you need.
The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits.
This isn't the XP machine, it's the ME and I don't think I can allocate memory as efficiently as I could with XP. I fired up the ME desktop, which I really dont use anymore, except for PostWork, because I was doing some beta testing and thought I'd be more likely to get it done in between hanging around here. It was very dissappointing to discover just how poorly ME handles the memory. I have tons more virtual here but it isnt touching it. Just now I couldn't handle a 3000 by 3000 tex with extra props and higher density hair. My Poser folder is on D disk with 24 gigs free and it's freezing all over the place. I rebooted too, so Explorer wasn't hogging it from surfing. Emily

You may want to see what RaVan has to say about this. I noted that he was talking about 98 and ME and that there maybe a memory helper you can use. it was about the 9th post down on the thread. - bikermouseQueri About the time Vicky Hi Res Textures came out, I was run ME and with the Hi Res textures and 512meg of ram, I couldnt render one Vicky with a textures. L I called DAZ and Curious Lab about this. They both said to use Win2K because of the memory problem ME and Win98 have. That why I went to Win2K and are rendering happily ever after. J The only thing I know about Poser now is that if you want more stuff in the scene like Hi Res textures, Figures, Prop, Hair and Lights. You better have a lot more system like Ram, CPU, Hard drive and operating system. ps bikermouse - Mosca has a MAC so he/she not running ME

that explains why my win98se machine crashed whenever I tried to use even a mildly hires texture, I don't miss poser taking the whole system with it on 98se, XP solved that for me, poser crashed the other day for the first time since I bought the new machine 3 months ago, but I had been running it for 9 hrs solid with loads of other programs in the background, oh the joys of having 1Gb of Ram to play with. Well, I bought XP awhile back when I thought a virus was about to clean out my puter completely and none of my ME's would accept their registrations-- I think I had them switched. I might should put it on the desktop. I was hoping that I'd be able to use PBoost there in it's entiretly but the render I lost yesterday in the frieze had potential and I lost all of it, forgot to save. I hadn't worried because I was using Poser on my laptop, but the laptop isnt that upgradable and sooner or later I have to move the main operation back. Sigh, I hate upgrading, it always takes soooooo long. And there are always subsidiary probs. Emily
Is it true, mosca ? a mac ? mmumble ... mumble ... G4 mac? ... ok got it sorry. This appears to be a real common problem on ME/98. there are lots of posts up right now all seeming to refer to what is probably a 128 Megabyte Memory Boundry. If you're using ME and have a copy of XP to upgrade to that's the way to go. I love xp. never since dos 6.2 has an os captured so much of my time. I think you'll like it if your laptop is up to the challenge.

Up till now, I thought Greg hair was the ultimate in slow. But I sat in front of the computer for 15 minutes and watched it do nothing at all when I tried to render the all-morphs-included-- the way I bought it-- Vogue hair. I have a p4 1.2G 512ram puter. Ain't it enough? Emily
