Subject: What does everyone do?

Lilgooser ( ) posted Mon, 17 June 2002 at 2:54 PM · edited Tue, 12 November 2024 at 3:01 AM

Im sure this has been asked before, but I'm asking again. What does everyone do for a living?

jacoggins ( ) posted Mon, 17 June 2002 at 3:36 PM

either: A. I'm a filthy rich, philantopist who doles out large sums of cash to those I think deserve it or to whom can tell me in ten words or less why I should share my vast fortune with a complete stranger... B. I work in an office supply wholesaler warehouse on the recieving dock... C. I am the missing link between man and the lower species and am exhibited in side shows at carnivals around the world.... ...take your pick....most people think it's "c"

jacoggins ( ) posted Mon, 17 June 2002 at 3:37 PM

I repair military tank engines and in 10 weeks time I will be made redundant after 13 years. Which Im exited about as I going to look for a job I might enjoy (after a take over 2 years ago they split the job into small peaces which made the job brain numbingly boring)

Eggiwegs! I would like... to smash them!

Me is a team coach in a call centre - which means when your mobile phone is not phoning or you don't like your bill and you call them, then want to speak to someone higher coz the first person couldn't do anything, I'm the guy you get. Amazingly people think I'm good at this, which is amusing, considering it's a hard fight not to advise people that there are millions of people in the world who don't know what a mobile phone looks like and would prefer to know how they are going to survive rather than worrying coz they reckon they've been overcharged 20p by a billing system that hasn't changed since they started using the phone 10 bills ago which they've never thought was wrong previously..... I hate customers. I'd much rather be a photographer. (",)

Up until 2 months ago... I spent the last 15 years as a DANB certified dental assistant/office manager. It was my first and last job in a dental office. My boss (the dentist) was rude to her staff, rude to her patients. One day she started her shit with me for the last time. I quit. She has left such a bad taste in my mouth that the mere thought of working in the dental field ever again makes me sick to my stomach..... So right now I'm a stay at home mom and loving every lazy second of it....and I'm working on making photography a career, because it the one thing in my life that I enjoy.

I am, therefore I create.......

Hmmmm... where shall i start ? Daytime job : producer DVD-video and CD-ROM presentations (mostly corporate communication stuff). I get to play with high end AV equipment and 3D software (and getting paid to do so). But, i'm also a lawyer dashing from one client to another negotiating and drafting contracts. I think i found some kind of balance between my creative urges and "the power of the dark side" (the legal profession). May the force be with you all.

I'm one of those engineers who create the needless needs for Niko. ;-) I used to work with electronics and write a whole lot of software; now I mostly do PowerPoint slides that put people to sleep in meetings. [If Niko saw how the rat race mambojumbo Process really works, he would go out and bash something with a pointy stick!] I (rarely) get to do something creative at work. Right now I'm diving into writing drivers for Linux, which is more fun than it sounds. On the bright side, photography and computer imaging are only hobbies for me. Since I still have a day job, with my hobbies I can do whatever I want without having to please anyone else!

Work as a programmer/support person for a Medical Lab.(going on 6 years) Mostly do simple report programming, and some interface work between systems. The company I work for has just been bought out. So I do not know what I will be doing in a couple of months. Before my current job, I worked at a RV dealership.(13 years) Mainly sales. I really liked that job (except I worked all the time). I got to meet some very nice and interesting people. Photography has always been a hobby of mine. Worked on the Yearbook staff in college as a Photographer. Actually have shot 3 weddings (got paid for) and other odd paying jobs in college. As I got married, kids and all my photography was been mainly snapshots. But my new digital camera has sparked my interest in photography again :) --Randy R

Nice one Firestorm another CAD designer. Me too but for the medical industry, my company makes body scanners and stuff. I wanted to do art after I left school but my dad made me get a proper job in engineering. So I started designing on a drawing board with a pencil it was the closest I could get. Now I design in the virtual world of the computer assembling products before they get out into the real world. But world domination sounds good. :O)

I work at 2 TV stations doing programming, marketing, and general station operations. Burned out, but not sure how to start over (wife, kids, bills...) Oh well. There's always my camera.

Rork1973 ( ) posted Tue, 18 June 2002 at 5:47 PM

I'm making a living graphic designer and photographer. I studied Corporate Information Management and also Economics at university, but I've always been busy with graphic design and photography. That's just a fate I couldn't walk away from, cause we have designers, painters, illustrators, etc all over the family. :) Photography is much more fun, cause I know my camera and can concentrate on the thing I want to shoot, while designing a site involves a lot of sitting behind a screen - it's no fun having to script or run through some other piece of code or whatever when the sun is shining. I'd like to either do photography full time or do less site design (cause I hate having to compress and cut my stuff in to pieces everytime) and perhaps do more covers (cd/music covers that is). Well, you just never know what life's got in store for us all next I guess :) So no need to spend too much time on that stuff :)

jacoggins ( ) posted Tue, 18 June 2002 at 6:19 PM

this way cool! got to learn about everybody's jobs... now next question... what is your favorite color? what is your favorite song? what is the airspeed of an unladen swallow?

Caledonia ( ) posted Tue, 18 June 2002 at 7:39 PM

Lilgooser, I'm glad you asked the question. Its fun find out more about everyone and turn names into real people. What other interesting hobbies can we share? I draw, write poetry, ballroom dance, play paintball as well as more mundane things like gardening, cooking & baking from scratch, knitting, crocheting... I just got my dad's '73 Yamaha Enduro fixed and will be learning to ride it (with a helmet, PC) I also just started a correspondence course to get a degree in business management. Hope that wasn't too much, I just felt like being sociable.

Well here's my not very exciting work story. did a fine arts degree & worked full time as an artist & made a living!! for a while, stopped working because of health problems & chickened out of jumping back in, became a homoeopath & now I'm trying to get back to doing the art stuff, I guess photography has always been a hobby & part of the art thing & I'm only just getting back into that too. I don't know about hobbies but I do a lot of walking, I live in such a beautiful place you'd have to tie me up to stop me!!

LOL! Yeah, they try to tell you this moderator stuff is just "part-time".... ;-P I spent 15-20 years doing admin asst, office management, etc, at one point did a year as an exotic dancer and another 3 as crew/driver for a racing team, 5 years as a stay-at-home mom, then another 3 or so as a "faxette" - spent the day sending out 1,000+ faxes on one computer and playing with graphics on another, decided I liked the graphics better, so now I stay at home and take photos and make pretty pictures and try to figure out some way to actually make money with them! :-)

TaltosVT ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 6:59 PM

Well, I'm a bit late on this thread, because I've been on vacation all week. Which means that (for a couple more days, at least) I do as little as possible, in as much sunshine as I can stand. Back in the real world, I'm a single father (my fun job), and a telecommunications and network specialist (my pays-the-bills job). Both of which I find strange, since I went to school to become an architect, and never planned on having kids till I was at least 30.

Talk about late! This thread is 2 years old! I used to be a software support and call center manager. I have been downsized so many times that I feel like Papa Smurf! So I went back to my former career optics. I sell and make glasses. On the side I do web design, graphic art, database creation, and spreadsheet creation and developement. I am also the Treasurer for the Diabolique Foundation (www.diaboliqueball.org). My long term goal is to make enough of a living in photography to avoid the rat race until I die. Or at least make photos that make people think or at least feel something. my short term goal is to just get time to shoot someting! (with a camera that is!) Magick Michael
