Subject: Hires Posette - morph suggestions wanted

dke ( ) posted Wed, 19 June 2002 at 10:39 AM · edited Wed, 05 February 2025 at 2:46 PM

I'm just finishing off a program that creates high-resolution models from low-resolution obj's. So basically, it will read a Poser model, and using a variety of subdivision techniques, create and export a high-res version of the model. This opens up a whole new world of possibilites as far as morph targets are concerned, since the higher density polygon layout will allow much more detailed and intricate morph dials. Course, some of us still rely on a variety of the original and addon morph dials :) so I want to be sure to include everybodies favorites. The existing beta cr2 contains all the original CuriousLabs chest and SuperHeroine/fbm morphs, but I'm sure there are a large number of addons and personal favorites I should be considering. So in short, I'm wondering two things: 1) What's on peoples minds as far as favorite existing addon morphs? 2) What's on everbodies "Wish Lists" for morphs considering Posette will soon have a much more detailed polygon layout? All comments and suggestions will be greatly appreciated, and if I should be adding a little more information, feel free to fire away with the questions.

sounds interesting... how about letting tailor create desired morph on hires posette?

dke ( ) posted Wed, 19 June 2002 at 4:35 PM

Hi Aleks, No probs! The program just does the subdivision and creates the hi-res version of the model. What you do with it after that is up to you :) So it's the program itself which is important and not the specific model involved. My basic intention was to post/offer modified cr2's on my web site that would reference the new high-res model(s). You would still need the program to create the initial high-res model, but after that the cr2's/MOR's with the completed morphs would be readily available, and if anyone wanted to create their own cr2's/MOR's, that would be great!

Sorry for the confusion. I received a few QuickMessages to ask about high-res versions for other models like Dork, so thought I'd post the answer here as well just in case other people were wondering. This is a software program, and will import and create high-res versions of ANY obj based model. I arbitrarily picked Posette as the first Poser model to do, but after that, it's open season on any of the other Poser models :) So if people would like high-res versions of Dork, that shouldn't be too long coming, and is just a matter of putting together the standard morphs. For that matter, it will work just as well for Vicki and Mickey - or Cats, Rats, Monkeys, Snakes and Dogs :) Not sure what morphs people would want that required a high-res snake, but that's not my place - I just wrote the software :)

Does it only increase the polycount, or is there some mesh-smoothing involved, also? What happens to the UV mapping?

Yes there's definately smoothing going on! Gotta have that! I'm trying to get away from that blocky look, so I would have to fire me if I propogated the problem :) I'll be the first to admit I didn't invent these subdivision techniques - they were invented way back last millenium by a number of different college and university professor types. I did add one of my own invention, but figured I better include the official methods first :) So they've been around a long time but got lost in the shuffle against NURBS. Sort of a VHS vs BetaMax thing I think :) Once Pixar started using them though, they gained a lot of attention, and have been gaining popularity in the high-end rendering and visual effects producers. I'll attach a couple tiny pics here from one of the promo images I've been working on. They show the results from the program so you can see the smoothing. Also posted the preliminary image up to my web-site so you can have a peek at that if you like. http://www.meshtools3d.com/hr-pic1.jpg Just doing user docs and creating the web pages so should have some more detailed information and a demo up in the near future. As for the uv map, it stays exactly where it was. There's of course more polygons covering the same relative area, but any texture maps/images will work in exactly the same way.

A second little clipping of the program at work. Maybe even better at showing the smoothing involved since this is a super-low-res model. or for the whole pic: http://www.meshtools3d.com/hr-pic1.jpg This is the first draft of the image, so please be gentle :)

Very nice!

mikes ( ) posted Wed, 19 June 2002 at 8:18 PM

First suggetion--duplicate Jim Burton's no-lump-leg morphs. Someone at DAZ still thinks women look like that.......

aleks ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 1:28 AM

it would be really nice if one could select only some body part to be "hirezed". i may be intersted only in hires shoulders on knees, for instance... is it possible?

bikermouse ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 6:18 AM

morph targets: Tails scales, antennae, claws, extra limbs. cyclops,3breasted women, animal noses, feringi ears etc.,horns, teeth for L.D.'s coonskin cap.

Staale ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 6:41 AM

There are several models of this kind already made of Posette, the problem is that most of the texels generated are wasted as they don't give the model any additional abilities (dimples, wrinkles, crow feet, etc.), they just increases the memory use and the rendering time. Selective generation of subdivisions to allow additional human features on the face and body is much better. Download the Vicky and Michael templates and see how the texels have been placed on them. Making a 3D model high rez is not a problem, making it low rez while maintaining its usefulness is.

you're weird biker, a 3 breasted woman? hmm come to think of it I can see the attraction myself ;) ok I'm weird too lol. dke it sounds like a great program will it mean we can move millenium morphs to non millenium figures properly? Rob

aleks ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 8:11 AM

doh, shoulders OR knees... how about a morph for bent knees where one can actually see patella? right now, when vicky bends her knees, there is a hole on that place.

dke ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 10:29 AM

(answers) LittleD: Thank you very much! mikes: Exactly the type of suggestion I was hoping for aleks: At present it subdivides everything you give it, but you could do what you want if you gave it just the knee and/or elbow areas. You would need to feel comfortable using the grouping tool to select out just those areas, but I've done some similar things for other projects. It is at the top of the list for version II of the program though, and on my personal list as well :), so at the moment it's mostly a question of deciding which of the several possible approaches to selective subdivision that I want to use/start with. biker: I ment 'existing' morphs :) but since you seem to have some company, it goes on the list :) staale: Well, the wrinkle/crowsfeet type of selective subdivisions fall under the Pixar patent I believe, so don't want to muddy those water's right off the bat with version I. Even then, a decent portion of it is handled by the render engine rather than in the model, so for most mid-range systems bump maps do a decent job. The types of morphs I'm looking for are the larger bone structures like ribs, patella and olecranon (elbow) leg with patella http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=92668 arm muscles http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=92066 ribs http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=95916 http://www.renderosity.com/viewed.ez?galleryid=95918 c1rcle: see, your vote DOES count :) It won't do a thing for moving millenium morphs across - the layouts of the models are very different and making a higher-res version of Posette won't really help to decrease those differences. Thanks so much for all the comments and suggestions. Guess I better go buy a new ink cartridge :)

c1rcle ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 12:26 PM

ok how about some animal face morphs for posette like the ones included in vicky. Rob

dke ( ) posted Sun, 23 June 2002 at 12:08 PM

That must be something from the Vicki 2 model? Unfortunately don't use that one, but sounds like a pretty excellent idea.
