Subject: The free stuff area has been changed

Spike ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 3:27 PM · edited Thu, 26 December 2024 at 4:46 AM

Members can now define whether or not an item is acceptable for Commercial Use. Members can now define whether or not an item is a Stand Alone item or an Add-on item. Also, the Free Stuff Search has been modified to accommodate these changes and to include these criteria in the search. So, you will need to update your items accordingly if you are concerned about how your items are used and whether or not they are stand alone or add-ons. Also, all items are defaulted to Non-Commercial Use and as Stand Alone Items. you will have to change them as needed. Thanks

Cool! What are the odds we can get a text add-on for description, also? I hate looking for hair or slothes or some such and having to figure out if it's for V2, etc. based on thumbnails, which usually don't say. Paul

The "Notes" section is now viewable...FYI. Clint

Hey, I just checked out Free Stuff and this is great! Fast work, too! Now if you could just get it worked out to let merchants back into the forums, you'd be set.

Well, other than for the clowns, um, clones, that is...

ironhart ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 7:07 PM

It was wrong of you to make the default for this option "Non-Commercial". Why should I have all my items labled misleading? This was not right and it certainly was not fair. At least for the transition period The most logical option would have been to lable a third choice "not specified" that way the submitter could change it. But I re affirm, it was not right of you or your staff to mis-lable my stuff. Furthermore, this leaves everything in the "freestuff" as Default non-commercial and therefore unusable for me and many others. Even though the artist might have intended otherwise. This was a very bad move and not well thought out at all. Ironhart

Axe555 ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 7:55 PM

ironhart: It seems to me that they erred on the side of caution. Freestuff items should have a licence text file with them describing any usage restrictions. The fact that all the items are labeled as a default non-commercial doesn't over-ride that. All it takes is editing your freestuff items a bit to correct this as you see fit I would assume. People have been asking for these changes for a while now, and I'm glad to see that the PTB are listening. Rich

ironhart ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 8:17 PM

I have no problem with the change. My problem is the dis-regard taken towards the contributers and their wishes as to the status of their products, Free or otherwise. Perhaps I am getting petty here. But I want the staff to be considerate of my work and my feelings when dealing with my goods and my reputation. When I first saw this change I noticed that a lot of stuff was labled "No-Commercial" and I thought 'wow! that is weird I didn't realize so much was non commercial.' And frankly I thought that it is crazy to make stuff non-commercial. Then I noticed my stuff was labled that way. My first reaction was disbelief and anger. I couldn't believe that renderosity had done this to me. Especially without warning. I'm tired of ranting. I guess since I am the only one concerned about this, I'll just keep my mouth shut and reload my stuff to freebies after they finish whatever they are going to do to it. for those interested you can still get my freebies through my site. I have temporarilly removed them from here. And btw they are for commercial use. Ironhart

Axe555 ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 8:28 PM

All you had to do was edit them, not re-do them completely. Also, you can't really expect the Admins to dowload all the freestuff items, check the licence, and mark them appropriatly. It's alot easier for the contributors to edit their items. Like I said they had to mark them somehow, so I think they just decided to err on the side of caution. Rich

ironhart ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 8:36 PM

The side of caution would have been to declare that the item has not been specified. I gotta learn to keep my word and keep my mouth shut. I'm going back to work. I have models that need attention. Ironhart

Ajax ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 8:47 PM

I think the change is cool, but everything should have been set to "Not specified" until the free stuff provider could get to it to set the relevant option. On the posting form, rather than checkboxes, a set of radio buttons with the alternatives would be good I think.

Ajax ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 8:48 PM

Also, I just noticed that the preview prior to upload doesn't show the new options, which kind of defeats the purpose of a preview.

Axe555 ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 8:51 PM

I wasn't trying to flame you, just discuss it is all. Maybe defaulting to not specified would have been a better idea, but I'm sure they had alot going on at the time. I just don't see as it's worth getting overly upset about.

Crescent ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 9:23 PM

I'm just glad it's here. It took a bit of work to change everything, and my counters seem to have reset to 0, but, it's livable. Thanks!

Crescent ( ) posted Thu, 20 June 2002 at 9:27 PM

Nevermind. The counters did not reset to 0 when I edited the items. The preview page lied to me. Boo! Hoo! I'll never believe it again.

noggin ( ) posted Fri, 21 June 2002 at 12:02 AM

Yep I think this is a largely positive change. I can't see anywhere to change the status between 'add-on' 'free-standing' on my edit form though_ am I missing something,Clint? Another observation (other than that disembling preview page) on our home page 'featured free stuff' section the new database fields don't display.

Anthony Appleyard ( ) posted Fri, 21 June 2002 at 12:13 AM

(1) It should be possible for a user to change these options on all of his models at once. (2) These options do not show on the upload preview.

noggin ( ) posted Fri, 21 June 2002 at 7:50 AM

A button has now appeared (or the mist has cleared from my eyes) to choose free-standing / add-on..Great! Also discovered that the featured free stuff page_ stays the same until you 'refresh' Duh!!! :-)

Sue88 ( ) posted Sun, 23 June 2002 at 10:03 PM

I agree with Ironhart. It would have been better to set the default as "not specified". I've been away for a couple of weeks and I've just found out that my free stuff have been marked as non-commercial only and add-on items even though they are all free to be used in commercial projects and are all stand-alone. And because of some glitch they still show up this way on my Home Page even after I edited them. :(

*And because of some glitch they still show up this way on my Home Page even after I edited them.* I have just looked at my Home Page and I found that all of my freestuff items that are there are marked there as not cor commercial use and add-on, even though I spent a day on a fast link resetting all my freestuff from commercial-not-allowed and stand-alone to commercial-allowed and whichever of stand-alone and add-on is true. And see the thread at this link.

Anthony Appleyard ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 12:26 AM

(1) If a freestuff item is an add-on, it would be useful if it could have a clickable link that points to the item that it is an add-on for. (2) In my previous message, "cor" should be "for".

ironhart ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 12:30 AM

ok, I'm going to give this one more try and attempt to be concise.

scenario: you are looking through the freestuff. You like the new feature. You think it's cool. you see that alot of stuff is labled "no-commercial". great! but this presents a problem.

memberA. you are a newbie here and you take the "no commercial" at face value and respect it and decide not to download the item.

memberB. you know this is a new feature of the downloads, so you download the item and open the zip, and see it was mis-labled. or you see it was labled correctly and respect the submitter's wishes. (we hope).

Both A. and B. are not informed regardless of the new feature. in fact, they are possibly mis-informed.

What is the Flaw in the feature as set up? It assumes that the download will be refreshed by the submitter. This can have a negative effect for two reasons, the submitter doesn't care or isn't around much anymore. Or the submitter just refuses to edit and leaves them be. Who does this hurt? It hurts memberA and memberB who don't have a clue about the whys or ways of the Freestuff. The lesson here is that regardless of the feature, nothing has changed for the user except that now stuff is possibly mislabled.

How to fix it? simple. Make the default "not specified". This takes care of all the problems.

Ok, now a related point. I looked at the "what's new". I assume the majority of these new and re-edited items are "fixed" by the submitters. If that is true and if the first 8 or so pages are an indication, then.... The Majority of the submissions are "for commercial use". So logicaly the default seems to be in error. By the by, If you use "RSR converter" for your market items. According to the "freestuff" designation, you are breaking the law and the submitter's agreement.

I know the staff didn't do this to mis-lead or to hurt anyone and perhaps thought it was a good suprise they were giving us. THe problem is they didn't think it out and they don't seem to be willing to fix it :(

Did I open this can of worms? No. I just found it.

x2000 ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 5:56 AM

This problem with "Not Specified" is this: how many people would be lazy and just leave it that way? Kind of defeats the purpose of all this, doesn't it? As far as the problems, any new system like this is likely to have a bug or two in it. I'm sure they'll be fixed soon. Unfortunately, they set this up right before the weekend, and I'm sure even the admins like to do more on a summer's weekend than sit in front of their computers. Give them a little more time. And as far as setting "Non-Commercial" as the default: as others have said, it was the wisest, most ass-covering choice. Had they done the reverse, we'd still be having this same thread, just with different names...

ironhart ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 1:09 PM

oh! I see now! then it is better to mislable the items so that those that are 'lazy and just leave it that way' will now have a mis-labled item rather than a designation that is clear. Someone please let me know when all this is fixed to the point where it is going to remain and when it works correctly. I want to put my stuff back up, but I don't want to do it 10 times.

Sue88 ( ) posted Mon, 24 June 2002 at 2:19 PM

I've just checked my Home Page and now the free stuff area displays correctly. Thank you, programmers and admins, for fixing it. I think it will be very useful for people to be able to find out whether an item has any usage limitations before actually downloading it. The "Notes" addition was also a good idea. Thanks! :)

ronknights ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 11:43 PM

Oh my god. We finally get something that tells us whether an item has restrictions on commercial use, now we get complaints on how it was done. I've always had the understanding that the majority of Free Stuff items had restrictions against commercial use. So this change is very appropriate. I think some people have spent more time complaining about the issue than it would take to make the changes. Message671414.jpg
