Subject: Would these Sell? (Facial Hair)

Right now, only done some playing around but I've been able to get a pretty decent looking goatee. For smaller renders it looks realistic, high res it still needs some work, but what I want to know is... If I made a big package of some basic colors (4-5 due to psd file sizes) in several styles of facial hair (full beard, goatee, side burns etc.) would they sell? Also what would a reasonable price be for such a product as well. Keep in mind that the skin texture would not be included it would be just the layers in photoshop to allow for easily adding the facial hair to any texture as well as creating your own colors as well. Any other feedback is appreciated as well. Thanks in advance.

Here is a quick shot of the white goatee that started this idea :-P

I think these are really cool. I am always looking for good hair for Michael. I would be interested for sure

If they were high res enough-- and easy to put on the textures [I've never done it, so a small tutorial might not go amiss-- don't know how the bumps on Michael's chin work]I think they would sell, we need good and easy bears that can go on any character and look right. It would need high-res though--at least 2000 by 20000,maybe 30000. I often wondered if these couldn't be brushed out like the-- don't laugh-- dog textures that look very flat until they're brushed up a bit. Though you need high contrast for that to work. Short answer is yes, WM. Emily

I think it would sell.. i'd pay $5.00 myself. You could Also make a brown vato-loco texture and MAT-pose set for micheal with a MOR-file that would make his face and body look more mexican. Add a heavy tattoo set as well, see who makes a 60's impala and make texture set for that too. But I think sales would be limited to our own south west, but it could be a cultural specialty. Of course, for our vato, you'd need a black tex-set for the goatee with a trans-map, a special slicked back hair or maybe just a tex-set for another hair. Also a hair net too man. You know what i mean Holmes? Then you'd make actual money if it works, but it will take a lot of f-ing work. On the other hand, make the goatee with changeable morphs and several tex-sets like you show above, that will sell for sure. then I'd pay $12.00, and it would sell all over the place. good luck!

There aren't enough beard, goatee mustashe etc props as of yet. If you transmap it better there might be a market.

I have been looking for a good beard set for Michael. There are a few textures out there that include a beard, but most don't look very realistic.

I have seen a few people looking to do this so I have placed my idea of this very same thing on the back burner. I will share some of my thoughts on this though. If the facial hair has a few possibilities and a great texture map it will sell well. Now make it a character rather then a prop so it it conformed rather then parented and you will get some additional functionality. Essentially use the tailor to transfer some or all of the mike face morphs over to the beard and you will have a fully posable beard prop that will always fit the character and move as the character smiles or talks. I'm sharing these ideas with everyone I see getting this idea to hopefully have all or most of them implemented in someones product. I doubt I will be doing mine in the near future simply because of the people I see attempting it are much better at doing hair then I am.

I'd never go for something that requires that much effort. But then I haven't mastered the art of creating textures myself. There are already some great products that will give Mike a beard. The best, in my opinion, is Anton's Fantasy Beard.

Crescent ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 11:09 AM

If the beard were a prop - or figure for use with Tailor - then I'd consider buying it. I'm still looking for a realistic blonde beard. I have a few good blonde texture maps, but none have a beard or goatee with them. (Lots of dark-haired texture maps with beards, but no blonde ones.) For high quality with realistic textures, I'd suggest $15. (You might be able to go higher, but I'd suggest a few facial morphs thrown in at that point so it fits the face well.) No offense, but the brush work on your beards does not hold up well for close-ups, so I'd pay a lower amount for what you posted. Hope it helps.

Definite is going to be good and sell. Please work a little bit more in the hi-res and you have a winner. Different shapes and color can be a blast. Good luck!

Thanks for the feed back so far guys, this is just what I needed. Let me clarify a couple of things that I think got lost in this. These will be photoshop files, the painted hair will be several layers so colors can be played with and easily customized and added to ANY head texture. I have only done the above very quickly, took me about 10 minutes in total to paint all six of them and they are only at 1500x1500. I needed a few for some shots and gave it a shot which gave me the idea to do bigger and better ones. I would make a couple dozen styles in all likely hood because lets face it, Anton's beard is good for long beards but it's not good at all for anything short and neat to the face which I find I'm always wanting to have. As for morphs etc. There would be no point because they go on the head texture. There is no bump map applied and not sure if one will be needed or not because I find with beards they don't do anything. I would also take advatage of Mike's beard morphs and have styles that would work with those morphs to give a bit of a longer look. Here is another picture of a style I have done very quickly in the past, that would have similar ones included with the pack.

And another one... So The styles will be there, it's more or less will people buy them if they have to apply it to textures them self in photoshop?

Crescent ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 3:04 PM

Photoshop layers would work for me. It was unclear how you were going to do this from the earlier posts. The later beards look much better, btw.

ardvarc37 ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 4:10 PM

DO IT IN TIFF! Not .PSD, I have PS 7 up from V. 4, but a lot of people do not have Photoshop and can't open a psd in any of their image programs. TIFF supports layers and alpha channels at just as good quality, and Poser supports alpha channels. I only know that because I have the Carmen texture for Vina D (and Vina D!), it is a TIFF with one alpha channel layer, and it works great in Poser 4. (Just a suggestion) I'll be up to buy it! Alex

whitemexican ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 4:33 PM

I'll have to look into that, TIFF would be a much better file size as well. I've never been able to save a TIFF that will use layers though.

ardvarc37 ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 4:38 PM

Well... PS 7 does it. I know it is "tiff capable" in itself. What Version of Photoshop do you have?

ardvarc37 ( ) posted Wed, 26 June 2002 at 4:40 PM

AND those are some awesome examples you posted above!!
