Subject: What's in a name?

I couldn't sleep so I'm reading this as I try to get myself ready to get back to bed. I'm not terribly coherent here. One doesn't always like to be nit-picky, but a writer should know how to spell and use grammar. The title of this forum is wrong. If it's a "writer's forum," the forum is only for one writer. That would be an oxymoron or something, because it wouldn't be a forum if it was only for one person. If it's a "Writers' Forum," it's for many writers. Gosh, I can't help it. I'm a writer, and also worked as a proofreader. And yes, I probably made a typo in this message. This forum has great promise. I'm just too shy right now to make the best use of it. Unless Ms./Mr. Writer claims ownership or responsibility of the forum. But then there could be two people named Writer running this show and.........if it were my site... would it be ramnimus's or ramnimus'. Wow. Getting a headache. Night all.

Now this is where I really get into trouble. 1.) If the name of the forum is "Writers' Forum," the current name is correct. 2.) If the name is just "Writers," then the ' isn't needed at all. It's like starting a sentence, then walking away. The ' indicates that something belongs to someone. Here we don't say who belongs to what. I'm gone. Sorry. Message671422.jpg

The way I see it is like this: Writer's Forum = Writer is (or has or any other verb ending with an s) Forum Writers' Forum = This forum belongs to someone/thing called Writer So I personally think this should be called Writers Forum = This forum is for anyone who is a writer :) However, being new to this sort of thinking I could be wrong, but I do try to get my information right before I sprout off but I still could be wrong lol

One very common misconception is the use of the "apostrophe" (') in a word with an "S." My last name is Knights. You put an apostrophe (') there to signify "ownership." Example: Ron Knights' web site. However, you don't use that apostrophe (') in this sentence: There are at least two Ron Knights in the world. An apostrophe (') is also used in a "contraction:" It's a nice day (This is short for: It is a nice day.) *** So if we get back to the possesive sense of the punctuation, we have two scenarios: 1.) If this forum belongs to one writer, it's a Writer's Forum 2.) If this forum belongs to more than one writer, it's a Writers' Forum. However, that only applies if both words are together. If we merely use the word "Writers" to designate the forum, then it's the same as having the Poser forum. No apostrophe (') is needed. *** Now that I've said all that, I'll be the first to say I've been known to fracture many rules concerning punctuation and grammar. I love to use exclamation marks a lot!!!!! Message671422.jpg
