Here is a picture of a character I am working on...and I have run into a few oddities with designing the texture maps. 1) on the beard (which is wizards beard from the freestuff), when I used uvmapper the image I came up with from it, had parts mapped overlapping each other. Did I do something wrong while using uvmapper? I tried as many settings in it as i found, but still left puzzled. 2) I also have a robe object which I will put on this guy (cant have a nekkid old wizard running around). But when mapping that one, it only had a front view on the robe (thips robe), so whatever texture I put on the front, also carried through to the back. Is there anyway I can work around this (other than haveing 2 textures...one when viewed from front, and another for back viewing)? Thanx

Does the beard have groups? You could try to go to Map/Color/By Group. If there are different colors in the map, then there are different groups in the object. You could right-click on the map and select one of the groups. Then go to Select/Hide Unselected. Now it would only show the group that you selected. You can save this texture map. Then go to Select/Deselect, then Select/Display/Show and now you have all the groups back again. Now select another group, hide the others and save a new texture map for this group. Do this with all the groups. This way you'll have a different texture map for all the groups and you can texture them separately. (Then, in Poser, you'll need to load each specific texture map for each specific group.) With the robe, is it mapped with the options Planar and Don't Split? This would make the same texture for both the front and back. You need to split it or map it differently to show the other side. But then you'd have to resave this remapped object and use this one in Poser. I hope this helps... Sue

Hi i have run into this problem. The problem acurres when ever you resize the Map after uvmapper has made and saved the bmp. if you want a large hi res map save it that way in uvmapper or you will have over laps and gaps. and also as stated above. hope this helps Vel

Hi Vel, I didn't realize that there was a problem like that with resizing; it's good to know! Thanks! Sue

Hello Again
With UV mapper, when I had it to "colour by group" it showed as being all one colour (as per the image here). But as you can see...it seems to have the beard bottom overlaying the beard top, and some strands thrown in for good measure. Now I know this all doesnt matter too much with beards, cuz a great deal of it is burried under texture and transperancies anyway...but if there is something I am missing it would be great to know, if something like this should occur with other objects as well.

As for the robe suggestion....I will still have to check that out :)

Thanx

Try select by material, and select by group and see what shows up in the drop down menu that appears in each.

Wow, deja vu.

RawArt ( ) posted Sat, 20 July 2002 at 2:39 PM

Select by material does show the objects as different colours.....but even so, what can I do with it then? They still are overlapped. (sorry if I sound a bit dense here) :) Rawn

Okay, instead of doing Color/By Group, do Color/By Material. Now it should show the different areas in different colors. (See picture.) So now you can right-click on an area, choose Select Material and select the material you want. Then you can do the hiding, saving texture, etc.

Sue88 ( ) posted Sat, 20 July 2002 at 2:49 PM

I would probably select the light green material which is behind the long beard and hide the rest. Save this texture map with a name. Then Deselect, then Display/Show. Now you can see everything again. Now I would right-click on the light green material and hide it (Select/Dispay/Hide). Now you can save this texture map under a different name. This way you can texture the 2 different areas separately and then load the relevant texture maps for the relevant parts in Poser.

hmmmm.....I do not have any right click options....could it be because I only have the freebie uv-mapper application? (or am I truely dense?) Rawn

RawArt ( ) posted Sat, 20 July 2002 at 3:01 PM

oh...wait wait wait......I was able to grab this by material and move things around on the screen. So...if I move them, will this now not map properly onto the object?...hmm...maybe I should try it and see first :) Rawn

Rawenrr What is happening is that you are showing a 2 "paged" texture map on one page. UV Mapper does this when you open an object that was sepperated onto 2 Pages. If you can move them around by using the select my material command so that every thing fits on one "page" and you can work with that then save the opject and the new map and have at it! If not you'll have to select the light green object and move it to the second page. I think of you go to help and look under hot keys, it will tell you the command to do this.I think (I haven't used the freebie for a while) that you select the part you want to hide and hit the "" key. THen if you deselct all (click on an open area), you can use the "" to toggle back and forth. Resave the object and then when you go to print or save the map select the option "Don't print hidden object" or some such. Print or save the first page, then toggle to the second page and repeat the print/save process to create maps to work with. Hope this isn't too confusing. If it is I'll try to follow this thread and clear up any questions. mike

Oh Yes!!!...that rocks! It worked wonderfully.....geez....I totally ignored the hotkeys :)))) woohoo!

Sue88 ( ) posted Sat, 20 July 2002 at 3:46 PM

Sorry about the confusion, I was using UVMapper Pro and forgot that the free version didn't have the right-click option. I also forgot about the "Exclude hidden facets" part. (That's what it's called in UVMapper Pro, I don't know if it's different in the other version.) I'm glad that it works for you now (thanks, Mike). Sue

Thank you all! ....damn there are so many fiddly little things to learn in poser...but slowly it comes. btw...what do you think of the wizard? Rawn

Sue88 ( ) posted Sat, 20 July 2002 at 4:15 PM

You're very welcome. :) I think he looks nice. Is that skin texture yours or somebody else's?

RawArt ( ) posted Sat, 20 July 2002 at 4:35 PM

haha...if that was my skin I would go see a doctor immediatly :) j/k but it is a texture I made from some high res photos that I have on file. I made him a bit yellow to look sickly, and added the tattoos after. Rawn

Sue88 ( ) posted Sat, 20 July 2002 at 5:35 PM

LOL I'm glad your skin doesn't look like that! But it looks good on him. Nice job with the tattoos! :) Sue

Getting in on this conversation late, and it sounds like you got the answer you needed. Just for the record though, I personally think that the prob is that the guy who made the beard is an idiot and didn't know what he was doing when it came to uv mapping. As for your Wizard, he looks great. Hope to see him when you get him finished. Also, wouldn't mind seeing that beard when you get it done. Rob
