I don't spend any time at 3D Commune, but I find this kind of attack totally outrageous. (I choose not to repeat some of the unkind words and sympathies running through my mind at this time... in regards to such hackers. But you can use your imagination.) Please pass along my sympathy and best wishes for a speedy recovery.
This made me so sick to read this over at 3-DC. It has to be a person who knows computers very well to do this! I love that place, even though my gallery is here. The people there are so deciated and helpfull. Catch this creep, who knows what they well do next!! It's this kind of Crap, that make me realize why Ironbear told me not to connect my new computer I'm getting to the internet. Even if it's more work to keep this one for the internet, I will do it. Sad there are people like this in our Poser comminutiy.

As I posted at 3DC, my spirit sister summed it up well when I relayed this to her. "How much of a loser do you have to be?" This guy's got some bad karma coming his way. It's not good to have so many people thinking negative thoughts about you; does bad things to your energy field. It'll come back to him, one way or another.
FyreSpriyt-Thats like the Native American saying, If you say or do something bad to an person, it will come back at you 100xs worse. I think the person who did this, will find one day his system has blow up, and all he has on his desk is ashes. And the Spirits in the sky are having a good laugh at this evil person.
Love is Grandchildren.
I'm confused about this, I'm off to read it more now but the comment of "Someone that we can't find yet put some commands in the free stuff comments that should have been stripped out but they got the coding wrong!! This mistake in their code allowed it to slip past our security and dumped half of our free stuff database. " Makes it sound like a mistake while further comments imply it was on purpose. hmmmm

I do not feel obliged to believe that the same
God who has endowed us with sense, reason, and intellect has
intended us to forgo their use.

It's real simple, M'Lady... From the way it sounds, who ever did the hacking put some code in to do something they shouldn't be(most likely IP Spoofing or something similar), but they really didn't know what they were doing and screwed the whole thing up...
tosses mac a colt .45 You take care of it, man, my aims been off recently...
Damn! Sorry to hear this, I can't belive what the sick egos from some person could make a harm as this one. I don't used to spend alot of time at 3DC but I want to express y solidarity with them. Persons like this one (who just harm, without pondered the comsecuemces of their acts) must be permanet banned from the Internet. My sincere sympathies for the 3DC community. Virus
SAL9000 - Hello Dr. Chandra, Will I've dream?
There was so much fabulous and different at 3DC-- I went there often. Cooler's and Maclean's stuff was worth the trip alone. Sounds like maybe it was dumb rather than malicious, but one never knows. It's so easy to sign up and have access, I don't understand why someone would try to fake it. But then, I don't understand destroyers anyway. All our best wishes are with you,3DC, so you are already better off than the creep who did this. I hope the restoration goes as painless as possible. Emily
Quote from Mark at 3D Commune 'It was malicious coding that someone uploaded to the Poser Freebie section. They put a Miva statement in trying to dump the database to them. What happened was our system strips out that kind of code to stop this from happening but somehow this person got enough in as a mistake in his coding to cause the partial dump. Instead of dumping to them as they wanted it dumped on itself and caused the loss.' Philodox - Thanks for the offer of the Colt, but I just bought a Kalashnikov and a few RPGs. Just show me where to aim! mac
My understanding is that someone was trying to steal the entire database (there are models at 3dc which don't appear anywhere else), and because of stupidity and ineptness managed to corrupt the data instead. Having data dumped back on itself sounds like what happens with cross-linked files (I've seen text and graphic information intertwined in ways which are forbidden in most civilized areas). Why would anyone want to take the entire database at one shot? Probably to sell it as a package. We can add lazy and greedy to the hacker's profile.
:: Conspiracy mode set to on :: Maybe it's not what you think! The free stuff has taken a beating lately, from many sources, including lately some of the merchants, who feel it's taking away from their profits. Perhaps the hacker was smarter than you think! :: Conspiracy mode set to off :: Regards- Lemurtek (whose probably just kidding, doncha think?)
I agree with Ben about Macleans' readme files, and with all the comments. I still think this amounts to vandalism, whatever the reason it was done. In the UK vandalism is termed criminal damage, and prosecuted as such if the perpetrator is caught. I sincerely hope this person is caught and dealt with.
The greatest part of wisdom is learning to develop the ineffable genius of extracting the "neither here nor there" out of any situation...."
I only have a couple of free stuff items at 3dc, but it's very discouraging (though not surprising) that someone would put their own personal gain over the welfare of thousands (looking at the news, I guess this is the 'new new economy') Or worse, the attitude of it's not enough that I've got mine, I have to take yours too. Even if they had succeeded in their attempt, the bandwidth usuage would have brought the site to halt. I expect we'll see more of this type of behaviour. Sigh. Regards- Lemurtek
acutally, using miva to pull a db dump is a syupid way to do it. yup the db will have a record of who uploaded the file, so that 3dc can get him/her for thier actions, if they choose to do so. most dynamic scripting laguages can pull a db dump easily enough, specially with ssi enabled, which is required for dynamic scripts. on a server I'm running I would have some sever lockouts in place, besides stripping illegal coding from uploads. and by limiting the scripting language options on the server to one you make it harder for illegal scripts to get through. with high security on a unix/linix box, each person (site) would have a specific login that would give them specific, limited access, with md5 passwords and shadow passwords enabled, a password could conceivably be 256 characters long, and kept in a folder not accesable by anyone browsing to the server...specially when that security level required a password to be changed every month, unless overridden by the root user (system admin for non unix people) about a year ago someone was attempting to hack renderotica through miva. wonder if this is in any way related. wish the db dump(legally obtained even was given access to the db by DSI) from rotica hadn't been lost in a crash..had the hacker's ip in it.
Jaqui, As I understand it, (see post #19), 3D Comm's server does strip out MIve statements, but the dumbo made a mistake in it, which somehow enabled some of it to get through (but with the wrong effect) Rose, Who are you talking to? LOL Are we in the same thread? Thanks for all the support and the nice comments about my readmes. Ha-ha! Even if the props suck, you can have a laugh. mac
Hi Rose, Good to see ya! I figured it had been deleted. 'this kind of stuff can really have a devastating effect' Thanks for all the support everyone. But I just want to say that I've spent the day revamping a lot of my freebies. Basically just slimming some down in size and fixing a few minor problems. And I'll be reposting everything, but with new, improved versions of a lot of the stuff. Some pieces will become posable cr2s. Plus some new pieces that I never got around to finishing. So, in a way, by making me look at the old props I made, this moron has helped, because now I know a few more tricks in max, I can pep the stuff up a bit. I'd still like to disembowel him though.... mac

Just so you know, these types of people are !NOT! hackers... Because, I one day aspire to be a hacker, and I would like to be able to use the term to describe myself without getting nasty looks and people threatening to kick my ass...This site uses cookies to deliver the best experience. Some emotionally unbalanced freak has hacked the Free Stuff at 3DC and caused major damage in the process. If you have any Free Stuff posted over there, READ THIS! PS: I already have the rope. Now we just need to find a nice tall tree... >:(
