Subject: Who is this troll and how do I fix him?

I was riffeling through my old computer (I forget what I was indeed trying to find), and came across this model. It was from Dunga from a long time ago. Is it a freebie? Or is it something that might have been grabbed and sliced? I have had fun grouping and placing materials, adding the eyeballs, and converted it to a New figure. BUT Of course all the joint params are wacky. JP's are beyond me at this time. And I'm trying desparatly to UV map it. I can't figure out how to get the PHI file to work. It errors out with can't find this and can't find that. I even cheated and tried Phi builder. That told me there were several errors too.* All I wanted to do is point the cr2 to the new obj file. But the cr2 has all the geom info. What to do. Maybe this is mute, cause I don't know if this is a free model. James * I'm on a MAC, I only get to use PC programs on a PC emulator.

I think I saw the figure ages ago as a sample with the first version of character studio... since i never figured it out, I don't know for sure...

I have never seen the figure before though it looks cool .. I have no clue how to do the editing on it and I am on a Mac as well with no emulators really ... Good luck

yep, that bad boy came from MAX/character studio

CharlieBrown ( ) posted Fri, 03 March 2000 at 1:54 PM

Looks like a Games Workshop Orc/Ork... Maybe that was a rough copy of the Ultimate Ogre?

jje ( ) posted Fri, 03 March 2000 at 2:02 PM

I have it on a CD that came with the first edition of "Digital Character Animation" I remember checking that all the meshes on that disk were royalty free since I had a notion to slice him up for a poser model. Until, of course I had one of those hammer to the forebrain realizations...I didn't know what the ____ I was talking about. I'd love to see it as a pz3. jje

Thoth ( ) posted Fri, 03 March 2000 at 2:05 PM

I remember that it used to be in the Free Stuff a while back. I had it myself and started to work on it, but that was before my old computer committed seppuku and took almost everything I had with it (got a CD burner now, thank God). I'd sure like to get my hands on that bad boy again; got lotsa ideas to use him in. :) Thoth

pdblake ( ) posted Fri, 03 March 2000 at 2:15 PM

Don't know where it came from but would love to get a copy. It looks just like a Games Workshop Orc. Anyone know where to get it? Pleeeeeeeeease!

jschoen ( ) posted Fri, 03 March 2000 at 3:41 PM

Well I have it, If someone can make it work. I'm still working on it, but the Poser manual is vauge at very best on character creation. The thing they DON'T explain is what the blazes should I name every part (they give half an answer). And how to move unmovable hierarchies. Seems that one I did it, and now the foot is at the top of the list, I can't move things around anymore. Another thing for me to do is find a way to learn JPs. I already have it set up as posable, but believe you me, it does some very strange bends and breaks.

ar2g ( ) posted Fri, 03 March 2000 at 4:21 PM

They gave that troll away in a Max book. I beleive he was created by Viewpoint Datalabs because they sell him in their collection cds. He works great with Character studio.

WarLoKK ( ) posted Fri, 03 March 2000 at 4:33 PM

He does look just like a GW Ork... Imagine decking him out with Ghost's 40K weapons and some nifty armor scraps... Classic Space Ork, ready to Waaagh with the Marines and Chaos Marines...

ScottA ( ) posted Fri, 03 March 2000 at 5:30 PM

I would really like this one. If you zip up the .obj and .CR2 files for him. And E-mail him to me. I'll set up the JP's for him. And send him back. ScottA iamsba@aol.com

shdwcstr ( ) posted Fri, 03 March 2000 at 6:21 PM

Ditto on the desire for this guy. I also could help with JP's and I have become a self trained x-pert on using PHIbuilder in conjunction with 3DS Max and Poser, could likely get him working in one day (all things). Let me know if you're interested. shdwcstr@hotmail.com

martialf ( ) posted Fri, 03 March 2000 at 6:29 PM

I just got it from Viewpoint folder on the cd included with Digital character animation book by G Maestri on New Riders edition

PhilC ( ) posted Fri, 03 March 2000 at 7:27 PM

I have seen this Troll in the example files that come with 3D Max. I do not know who holds the copywrite, it may now be public domain, but I would not be happy posting it.

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Fri, 03 March 2000 at 7:57 PM

I heard it isn't public domain and Dunga took it and claimed it as his illegally ... It is from the MAX files to my knowledge ...

jschoen ( ) posted Fri, 03 March 2000 at 8:11 PM

Well, I guess it won't be posted, but I still need some help with the JPs and getting the cr2 to look for the .obj file instead of having the geom within the cr2. Shdwcstr, and ScottA, I would love to see what you can do or in anyway you can help me eith this. He would make a great orc, for my WIP Tolkien stuff. James

jje ( ) posted Fri, 03 March 2000 at 9:15 PM

Aaarrrrgh I just checked the Viewpoint license on the CD. Yup we're nailed. Can't distribute the model or any part of it. Ya do have the right to do whatever you want to it. So turning it into a poser file with joints is ok. As is using or posting animations and images. So he is still kosher for Tolkien images. Well then how about a tutorial for those of us who DO have it to set it up? Or a secret society like Skull and Bones? Damn, I have a hammer I just know he'd find cuddly. jje

ookami ( ) posted Sat, 04 March 2000 at 1:09 AM

If someone does this this guy Poser-enabled, can you distribute the Poser stuff and modified geometry using Mover? I actually bought the book and have the CD with the little guy on it...er... I HOPE I still have it...hehe... =)

Eshal ( ) posted Sat, 04 March 2000 at 4:28 AM

I second ookami's suggestion..if you can/have made this guy into a working poser character please, please distribute the Poser info etc in Cr2 format for those of us less handy in the modeling arena :) Regards Eshal

I'm a genetically enhanced blonde...what's your excuse? ~Eshal~

dunga ( ) posted Sat, 04 March 2000 at 6:51 AM

then it was removed and I was banned , temporarily though. And even the Viepoint text allowed me to distribute it poser ready. so please check out the legal notices again and if you post it , please let me know.

ookami ( ) posted Sat, 04 March 2000 at 8:54 AM

Too many people in PFO are in a freakin banning frenzy sometimes -- even before they know all the facts. I think they enjoy the power just a little too much. Sometimes they ban people for reasons I can't agree with, especially having taken 2 years of law at college. At least the crew here at Rednerosity are a little more tolerant of people who don't know any better asking questions (can you post that model...) and exercising thier 1st ammedment right to free speech.

ar2g ( ) posted Mon, 06 March 2000 at 10:14 AM

I'd also like a tutorial or maybe even the set up parameters. I have this guy in about four cds. 3 books i bought had him as well as Max and Character Studio. But I would love him Poser ready :) AR
