Mr Cooper dropped in on my earlier thread to say that crosstalk HAS been fixed in P5 and the street price will be 30% lower than the MSRP. Mr Robert Whisenent from DAZ also wrote a very informative post in the thread. Such distingushed guests in my first ever Rosity thread! I'm so proud (not kidding). For those that missed it, here's the link.

So have they cut loose with an upgrade price yet?

Questor ( ) posted Thu, 01 August 2002 at 6:30 AM

I understood the statement to mean that the retail price would be 30% more than the recommended. Not less. I guess it's just the way I read it. Oh well, we'll see when it hits whatever stores it's going to hit. I sure as hell won't be paying that kind of price plus shipping so I hope CL have found a UK/European distributer.

Questor, I have never heard of a case where Average Retail Price is higher than Suggested Retail Price. I'm sure Kupa meant that the price we pay for Poser 4 is on average 30% lower than SRP. If I remember correctly, when I ordered Poser 4 directly from Curious Labs, the box was shipped from Europe (UK, I think), so shipping was not that expensive. The must have some kind of arrangement with a distributor in Europe for handling European clients.

Kelderek: Probably, like I said, it could be just the way I read it. When I first looked at getting Poser4 it would have cost me the same as the full version cost in shipping and import tax to get it to the UK. I was not amused at the prospect of paying twice normal cost. I eventually found one in an auction for a bankrupt company so got it cheap, bit I never did find the thing on UK soil from a software distributor until late last year when Software Paradise started stocking it. I would assume that CL have a European distributor agreement because of the different language versions, but I don't know for certain. :)

www.dabs.com stock Poser 4 + ProPack at about 10% less than Curious sell it on their website, which is unusual since it would be expected that the official distribution channels would be able to undercut the street price.

Further, the European prices have about 30-50% markup (before tax) from the US price, so it may be a good idea to wait until the third party distributors get their copies if CL cannot get their distribution channels sorted this time.

ProPack was available at dabs a couple of months after its official release.

Actualy it is rare that a company would undercut "street" prices, if a retail store can't sell a product for the same or cheeper then a customer can get it from the manufacurer then they have no reason to stock the item. any company would be foolish to do that to their loyal vendors. as far as euro gouging, that sounds like bad distribution channels to me, and CL would be best served to use a direct chanel solution to circumvent gouging but not to sidestep honest retailers who do them a service by promoting a product.

Good point regarding street price. Form what I can remember the "official" Dublin distribution office was corresponding under the name of Curious Labs, but I suspect that they were probably operating under the umbrella of the parent company Egi.Sys. Bill

Online Now!

Hmmmm... 70% of $549.00 would be about $384.30 for a FULL copy of Poser.... I keep seeing remarks about a tiered upgrade pricing structure, so I guess the price is different upgrading from a P3, P4, or P4+ProPak... I wonder if Renderosity will be adding it to the MarketPlace? (Including Upgrades?) Might simplify things for some members.... I only hope they've selected a stable and accurate mature technology for the anti-piracy component this time - I haven't heard anything about that element, yet.

549 x 0.30
Sorry. There's always one in the crowd.

I bought P4 from a book shop in Munich, not bad considering I ordered the English version :) It took a week, from order to delivery, not sure where they got it, but I'm assuming Egi.sys as they're a German company. later jb

The problem with shipping software from US to Europe is the added VAT and import duties (plus the administrative charges for handling this!). When I ordered Poser 4 from CL in May last year, it was shipped from within the European Union = VAT already included and no duties. As long as that is still the case when buying directly from CL, minor discrepancies in price between retailers matters less.
