THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: bryce 5

Anyone prefer B5 to B4 or even B3. Just curious which version you folks prefer

Aldaron ( ) posted Mon, 05 August 2002 at 9:01 AM

Much prefer Bryce 5, more options, etc.

Rayraz ( ) posted Mon, 05 August 2002 at 9:05 AM

I prefer Bryce 5 because of it's render-options. But for a beginner with a really small/non existent budget Bryce 3 is a better option, because it's been given away for free with at least 1 mag.

I like, and use, 4. Version 5 has some bugs, but it has the added Tree Lab, which is excellent.

I use 5 because it has more features and some cool new rendering tricks, and is OSX native. I also like the ability to dole out my renders between my 3 computers via Bryce Lightning network rendering. -Paul

With the patch, B5 is superior than B4, but not necessarily advanced. Render engine is better. Can get the same speed as B4 with lower settings and better quality with higher settings. Love the tree lab. light lab is nothing new, just organizes the lighting in B4 in a better way. Terrain and lattice labs are easier to work with but still the same old stuff...brush choices are round, round and round. You can pick any as long as its round. Consider the improvement of P5 over P4, of C2 over C1 and you'll see how far behind the times Corel is. I got my CG start in Bryce and will always appreciate it, but I'm moving on to Terragen and Universe and other packages.

Aye, I've used 3, 4, and now 5, and I currently use Bryce 4 at work (in my spare time of course! HAH!) and run Bryce 5/Lightning at home, and I totally agree with Eric. The Material Lab for example is nearly identical in 5, 4, and 3, so I find myself making textures at work and e-mailing them to myself for home use. I've found them both (4&5) to be nearly uncrashable; although I heard that 5 was unstable before the patch, I never used it without it. If Corel wants ME to buy Bryce 6, it better kick ass. Big Time. I found Terragen a joke, and Eric you silly monkey, one doesn't "move on" to Universe, that would be like "upgrading" Bryce to Photoshop! But still, Lightwave is in the trees, the air I breathe, calling my name...

Rayraz ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 8:12 AM

Lightwave is calling my name too. The only problem is that after I heard lightwave call me the price-tag comes blowing by and I think 'See you over 2 years Lightwave, I don't have the money now' :)

Aye, I'm with you on that Rayraz, the only way people "buy" top-end stuff like that is with a business loan or something, really, and I'll hopefully be in that position soon... (cackles at himself)

EricofSD ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 10:13 PM

Oh, I'm not saying terragen is the bomb, not at all. Until the program can progress to import, etc, its pretty much a background maker. I do like the renders in terragen though (for what it does). The renders are far more realistic than Bryce, but hey, Bryce does much more. Now, Universe and the EI Animator are rather interesting. I think the interface is similar to LW and even though LW is a better package to use with Poser, consider the $200 price tag on Universe 2.9 (bundled with animator 2.9 and amorphium pro 1.2) compared to the price that comes with LW. I guess what I'm saying is that my purist die hard bryce days are starting to crack a bit.

ocddoug ( ) posted Tue, 06 August 2002 at 10:45 PM

Imagine Bryce with Terragen realism....I'd have a 24/7 continuous orgasm.

shadowdragonlord ( ) posted Wed, 07 August 2002 at 6:24 AM

Aye, I've always held the opinion that I can smoke anything Terragen could ever make, given the available images here at renderosity, but that's just my ego talking. I don't know anything about EI animator, but isn't Universe just for making starfields and such? I have 1.62 on my work machine, and I can't imagine you comparing it to Bryce at all Eric so I'm curious if the new version is 3D or anything? Still, given BR5's sick rendering capabilities, even when I'm using lightwave as more than a test I'm sure I'll be rendering all kinds of stuff in Bryce still... It's simple, you schmucks at Corel who AREN'T reading this thread but SHOULD be : - Exponential growth! At least TRY and keep up with Nvidia! Is that too much to ask? I made a son, I'm sure thirty people at Corel can make us a KILLER Bryce 6. (again I apologize for all the damn commas!)

airflamesred ( ) posted Wed, 07 August 2002 at 1:11 PM

Shadowdragonlord are you scotish by any chance cause your comments always start with Aye. Terragen does one thing and it does it well but anything you do looks good.Whats the point?. All the tools are there , in bryce, to make wonderful images but there is no point in using it as a purely landscapes. The closer the tools we have (bryce, lightwave etc) get to photorealism the easier it becomes and hence defeats the object somewhat. My whole point with this thread was that I have no need to upgrade to B5 or perhaps B6 just to make things easier for me.I want to let my imagination dictate the tools I NEED rather than corel telling me I need something. Having got that of my chest I shall leave you all in peace thanks Mark

(bows to you) You got it, it's the artist, not the tools that count. I wish I could paint more watercolors myself! I'm Norwegian, born in Korea... Viking Ninja by birth, Dragonrider by faith...
