Subject: Cel Shading

Does anyone know a good method for rendering Cel Shaded pictures. I know Poser has the cartoon view mode, which is more or less what I'm looking for. However, since it is a view mode and not a render mode, you don't get antialiasing, and the ability to save the 2d image. Is there a way to have Poser's renderer do cel shading? The back of my mind tells me there is a way, probably something very simple, but right now I can't figure it out. Maybe I'm just having a Friday moment. Thanks Josh

The solution isn't very simple, but it's easily overlooked:

Switch the display mode to Cartoon or Cartoon-with-Lines, then render as a one-frame animation.

Animation menu --> Make Movie
Set the Sequence Type to Image Files
Set the Quality to Current Display Settings
Enable antialiasing
Set the Time Span to Start 0:0:0:0 and End 0:0:0:0 (1 frame)

or you could use those settings and just antialas the document (Alt=Ctrl=R) and export the Image then ofcourse, there is always the sketch designer, you might play with that and see if you can get some results you like :)

I think you can get the same effect by choosing Render/Anti-Alias Document. Then by going to File/Save As... when it's done, you ought to be able to save the image. I hope this helps...

The REAL problem with using Poser's "cartoon render" mode for cel shading is that "cartoon render" mode won't render textures, so everything ends up being delineated in solid colors only -- and if a detail isn't built into the actual mesh of an object, then you won't see it at all in "cartoon render" mode. Therefore, Poser doesn't have a true cel renderer. When I saw the folks at Curious Lab at last year's SIGGRAPH (in L.A.) the ONLY thing I asked them for in Poser 5 was a decent cel shader. They all looked at me dazed and confused, like deer caught in the headlights. I never did understand why my simple request seemed to baffle and confuse them -- especially when you think of how many comic book artists out there use Poser and would probably LOVE to have something that would render out in 2D.

jjsemp, may I recommend a bit of creative postwork?

Two renders: one textured, one cartoon-shaded. Blended together in a paint program to achieve a shaded look with textures.

Thanks for the excellent ideas. Though for what I'm trying to do, it may take to much time to get cel shading done. Oh well, guess I will have to go for the "realistic" look in my work. Thanks Josh
