Subject: Propack errors in Lightwave

krimpr ( ) posted Sat, 24 August 2002 at 12:00 PM · edited Fri, 02 August 2024 at 3:51 AM

Got a bit of a problem here. In preparation for ordering P5, I bought the P4/Propack combination and installed everything last night. I created a poser file with a man walking along a path and after installing the plugin, sucessfully had him marching along in Lightwave (6.5b). After proudly admiring my brilliance, I saved it as a .lws and went to bed. This morning, LW has decided that it cannot read the file, and attemping to reload the oigional poser file creates an error message "Lightwave has caused an error in windows and will need to be restarted. An error log is being generated." Further attempts at creating new files in Poser are successful, but opening them in Lightwave is not. All of the files appear to work properly in Poser. I have since uninstalled Poser/Propack and the LW plug in and then reinstalled everything, but with identical results. Anybody know what gives? Thanks...

Did you also install the latest ProPack patch? Ron

Thanks Ron; I didn't know about them. I'll download them and then let you know. Bill.

Bill Also if you still have problems post in the LightWave forum. You should get a fast response. Ron

hey it seems the pro pack is overrated. i get the same thing with Max...... but i found out that, max does not like the path generated by the walk designer. maybe that has something to do with it... but even without the path. whenever the propack does work, i will save it. and the next day boom. crash......... generating errors........ pro-pack is not a good investment....... so if anyone is considering purchasing it.... DONT...... i am going to stick with Conans Maximum pose...... at least that works the way it claims to.......

I just don't get it. Last night everything was awesome... I've installed the propack & LW updaters and now I get an option as to whether I wish to triangulate my geometry or not. Both selections provide a new result: no error message, but no poser figure, either. The co-ordinate indicator is set in the scene offering me the opportunity to position my Poserdude, but the Poserdude isn't there. I know it can work because like I said it already has once. Maybe it's like me and resists working weekends. Thanks Ron for your suggestion, I'll try the Lightwave guys. isidro, you're happy with Maximum Pose? Is it relatively seamless into your Max or do you need to have bioengineering and particle physics backgrounds to use it? I kinda liked the idea of Propack because I figured it would be friendly. The last 9 hours haven't been alot of fun.

the propack has never worked correctly for me since day one... and i am not the only max user with the problem.. i have had numerous discussions with light wave users as well. and i am confused as to why we were duped into purchasing a product that is so buggy. conans maximum pose works in the same principle as the propack. it hosts the poser file in max i might add that i am receiving no monetary compensation whatsoever in my endorsement of his product. i am merely staging an uprising agains curiuslabs, for making us spend money on a product that has never worked.... might i add that as to my knowledge. the propack still cant install itself properly......... here is the website to conans products... but last i saw there was no version for lightwave available sorry dude http://innuendo.ev.ca/products.htm

No Lightwave??? now I know how those Mac guys feel... Thanks for the address, I'll have a look around. I've posted my problem over at the LW forum so hopefully I will get some insight from someone that has seen this before. A buddy at work makes small clocks out of music cd's, so no matter what it will be useful. Just would rather it happened to a Bee Gees or Barry Manillow disc...

Now I get it...You need to delete the path before saving the file in Poser. All of my futile attempts were a result of this mindless oversight which, if I were to have been more vigilant, is probably clearly explained in the manual. Now, hopefully I can figure out what happened to his clothes in under 15 hours. They disappeared. Thanks for your replies.

Not to rub it in, but the readme file that installs with the Poser Lightwave plugin, clearly states that. Only thing is... that file installs to your Lightwave/Programs folder! Snicker! Just a thought... Are you SURE that the clothes are not making it into Lightwave? Have you checked for those parts in the 'surface editor' panel?

krimpr ( ) posted Sun, 25 August 2002 at 8:33 AM

Thanks Norbert, you're right. I did find the readme file in the LW program folder and it does clearly state that the path must be cleared prior to saving, and are not supported inside LW. I didn't think of looking in there as I figured that it would have been in a Poser folder. I also checked the surface editor but, unfortunately there are no clothes. When I selected the nude figure in poser (Eddie in this case) and then selected shorts for him, Poser named the shorts figure 3. Adding a shirt caused Poser to name the shirt figure 2. When I load the file into LW a dialog box states that it "cannot find figure 2, would you like to select another file?" and then repeats this request for figure 3. I have tried navigating to the appropriate clothing file for the requested clothing inside the Poser directory, but LW terminates. I'm not sure what direction to point it in. An option I suppose is to save the dressed figure as a .lwo and then bring it into the Setup Room in poser and assign a skeleton to him as a single figure, but am unclear as to why I should have to do that... Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.

I got it now... I exported the fig 3 as a .lwo (shorts) and Fig 2 as a .lwo (shirt) and directed LW to it. I'm new to both programs so I'm a little slow on the uptake, although I couldn't find anything in the Pro Pack docs that explains this. I had the impression that the .PZ3 file would contain all of the necesssary files. Everything is working great now, and thank you people for your help.
