Subject: I was wondering if Poser 4 will be really extinct?

Virus ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 2:12 AM · edited Wed, 13 November 2024 at 10:36 PM

For what I was reading Poser 5 has a lot of "cool" improvements as the rendering machine, but I was wondering If it really has what I need? after all Poser 4 is able to do almost the work that poser 5 does, Well with a little help of outside programs as The Tailor, and Bryce as render machine :) I'm asking this because I'm trying to figure it out if people will be interesting about still getting things for poser 4 or should I store my copy of poser 4 into the fridge and move with the flow? How many people outside are thinking to keep their poser 4 copies for a while? Thanks in advance for your answer, I'm doing this questions because personal interest. Regards Virus

As a (fledgling) vendor myself, I've also been wondering about this. As a Poser 4 user, I will be sticking with it for a while. Like you, I use Poser as a tool that simple represents one cog in the overall "machine". I enjoy doing postwork as well. Poser 4 as it stands works well as an illustration tool.

Well i will most certainly keep my copy of poser4, mainly because the new features of p5 will most definetly strain my computer so much that i wont be able to fully utilize them that often, if at all. i will endeavour to carry on with p4,as i also think that i have not exhausted its potential, its a personal thing i guess. one day when i have the money and have upgraded my pc somewhat.. i might go for p5.. til then its good ol p4 for me..

-Waldo- ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 2:29 AM

Yes Poser 4 will extinct because of important tools are in P5 Waldo

jjsemp ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 2:29 AM

The one thing Poser 4 has that Poser 5 lacks is "entry level" simplicity. If you want to get something done quickly, I think Poser 4 will still be the way to go. Poser 5 is several degrees more complicated.

WiNC ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 2:32 AM

I also am one who will not be moving to P5 - I will be continuing to work with Poser 4, Pro Pack and 3dMax with a lot of post work - and someday I will finally put money into saving my wrist and using a Tablet instead of the mouse. Since most of my art work is now more comic style and Anime Style Poser 5 will not really offer me anything more that my present system offers. As Netherworks says, Poser 4 is a cog in a overall 'machine' - Poser 5 isn't going to be any better cog or remove the whole machine in my case... (just I wish I could find a really nice Hair plugin for 3dMax which is free :P) WiNC

ablc ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 2:43 AM

I will keep my Poser4 running because of Vue compatibility, and I'm not even sure that P5 will works on my laptop. Anyway, we MUST think of Mac Users too. They won't have P5 next week... Laurent, Paris, France (The Pigeon English belong to me...)

EricofSD ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 3:18 AM

I posted my first P5 image above and I am truely impressed with CL. However, I do not think P4 will disappear for the following reasons. 1. There are some artists that still use P3 in their bryce renders because P3 is sufficient for what they do. 2. I did notice that the interface responds faster in P4. My 1.4 athelon is fine with P4, but I'm gonna upgrade the machine with P5 now. I think there's a lot of folks out there who just don't have the bucks or interest in upgrading hardware. 3. There's still a lot of free stuff and merchant stuff for P4 and doubtless the price of P4 will reduce over time. More folks will be drawn in. 4. I agree with the comment above on easier entry level use of P4.

wdupre ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 3:27 AM

Keep the poser4 stuff coming, I've made the upgrade to 5 but most of the poser 4 stuff will still be wanted conformong clothes will still be needed in P5 (dynamic cloth is cool but time consuming and not nessasary in a lot of cases) as will props, and poses, mesh based hair for exporting to bryce (unless bryce 6 comes out able to import strand based hair but I'm not holding my breath.)and textures (Now that we know that don and judy take mike and vickis,)will be welcome. don't believe for a moment that P5 content will completely supplant the stuff that is in the marketplace now.

EricofSD ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 3:27 AM

Oh, and one more thing... there's still a real need to export to other apps like Vue and Bryce. Since the dynamic stuff doesn't export, and since some other apps have greater control on lighting, etc, I suspect many will stay with P4 or use P4 items (like Koz hair) in P5 just for export reasons. I have no plans on abandoning Bryce at this time.

bijouchat ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 3:30 AM

yeah, I'm out wondering about the hardware thing myself. P5 is going to be a ballbuster on my machine... and I'm not ready to upgrade my hardware right now. I think I'll be using P4 for a while, even if I get P5... if its too slow for this computer, I will have to continue on with P4 until I can afford new hardware.

MadYuri ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 4:10 AM

I brought the P5 update but it will do me no good in the foreseeable future. I render in Cinema4D and without a hosting plugin Poser 5 is useless for me. All the new features are nice if you use Poser standalone, but for now P5 doesn't play nice with other 3D apps. So P4 lives!

c1rcle ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 4:22 AM

Considering people have only started getting poser5 in the last 2 days it's a little too early to start saying poser4 is dead, it will take a while for people to get used to poser5, so poser4 still has some life left, it will be months or even years before poser5 takes the crown off poser4's head. Converting your poser4 items to work with the new poser5 features would be a good place to start though.

bijouchat ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 4:39 AM

I use Carrara 2 a lot, and I won't be abandoning it either. I hope that Poser 5 sometime in the future will play better with it.

EnglishBob ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 7:15 AM

I haven't exhausted everything that Poser 4 can do yet, and I don't have loads of money - so I'll be using P4 for a while yet, looking for P4 goodies and producing some more of my own. :-)

I'm a rookie so p4 for me..until such time as I run into somethign I cannot do... that and the P5 hair so far looks a bit funky to me. But Im sure over time I will upgrade but..thats a long way off

P5 has lots of new features which I'm eager to try but I admit that P4 would be enough for me. but... We will forget P4 within a year as we forgetted P3, so I need P5. Yarp btw I will miss .RSRs ;(

we'll just have to find you something else to work on Yarp, I wonder if multiruntime mat files are possible?

krimpr ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 8:43 AM

I'm another one who will be waiting a bit for P5, although I do intend on getting it eventually. I just recieved P4/Propack, and am learning my way around on it. Although I wish that I didn't have to learn P4 and then relearn everything all over when I get P5, I use the Propack for integration with Lightwave, which isn't ready with P5 yet. I know that CL must resolve Mac issues before concentrating on the export options into other apps, and I am quite content to wait patiently until that happens. But will I upgrade when that day comes? Absolutely. At $129.00 for all the extra features resistance is futile, and I too will be assymilated.

SmallFry ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 10:12 AM

Remember that the Millenium figures work in both packages, so they remain constant thru both (in case you're thiinking of making new clothes or props). Plus all the P4 stuff works in both packages.

No, I don't think so, not any time soon...Sharen

BrianR ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 11:28 AM

P4 extict!!?? Not for a long while if ever...it's ease of use, it's huge community for a start will ensure it's survival...I've upgraded to P5 (though it's not arrived in the UK yet) but I don't see it taking over for some time as there is much to learn in what appears to be a much more professional & complex app...now to me this is a good thing but to those who are happy with the ease of P4 or use it occasionally as a hobby it may be an expense they don't need...so as I look forward to unwrapping my copy of P5, I still say "long live P4" it will stay on my drive & be continually in use for many years to come :O)

c1rcle ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 11:35 AM

even tho I'm waiting for Poser5 like BrianR Poser4 is staying on my harddrive too

yarp ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 12:09 PM

Of course P4 is good enough to deal with Millenium figures but I bet that within a year nobody will speak of P4 anymore. I like P4 like everyone here, but c'est la vie... of a software. c1rcle, don't bother for me I've already too much to do. And of course I'll carrefully study the P5 leaks ;)

SAMS3D ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 12:18 PM

Remember the hair in Poser 5 can not be exported, also many like to use other applications with their poser, like Mover, new to Vue with Poser 4, (I don't think it is for Poser 5) and we always need clothing and other objects...so no I don't think it will be extinct, they didn't stop selling it did they.....NO, we will need it, it is stable and a good software. Allen9 ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 1:01 PM

[[ Of course P4 is good enough to deal with Millenium figures but I bet that within a year nobody will speak of P4 anymore. ]] You are assuming that EVERYBODY who uses Poser also has the ready cash to upgrade both software AND hardware right now, or in the immediate future. I don't think so. THere are many people who just can't do that. Also, lots of those new features do NOT export to other programs like Bryce. For those who do scenes which do not center on one or two figures but are much more complex, Bryce or other programs are still far far better for setting up scenes than Poser. I for one do not expect to EVER render scenes in Poser, regardless of the version. There are a lot of others in similar situation. Yes, Poser 4 will gradually fade into the background to a certain extent, but I don't think it's going to be 'extinct' for some time to come.

Barbarellany ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 1:59 PM

P4 will be around and is worth supporting in my opinion. We are months away from a Mac version, any many are waiting for the bugs to be worked out. I see people are setting up in P4 then importing into P5. Due to the hardware demands, that solution may be around for time to come. Also, P4 things can be used in P5, but not the other way around. I think P4 textures, props and objs will just have a broader base. Keep them coming!

KateTheShrew ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 3:04 PM

While I have purchased P5, it does have a steep learning curve. I also have projects begun in P4 that are too near completion for me to be able to start over by learning P5 and then recreating things. Especially since those projects combine Poser with Vue (where I find it is much easier to build and light a scene than it is in Poser). So for me, while new projects will likely take as much advantage of P5 as possible (and perhaps even some elements will be useful for current projects) I am not about to abandon P4 just yet. Kate

Khai-J-Bach ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 3:19 PM

I say no to P4 becoming extinct. the lack of export of advanced features in p5 (hair) mean that to most 3D artists that use Poser as an addon, not their main program, it's not that much of a step up. having setup scenes in Poser and my native trueSpace, I gotta favour tS all the way. Example - my Poser scene 'Spacewolf Ambush', (in my gallery), was a BITCH to setup in Poser. to zoom out enough to pose the Predator on the roof took a lot of pawing on the mouse! a full 5 mins of swearing, begging and thinking of abandoning the scene all together.. then Clint released the Luuv TSX for tS.. I now only use Poser to setup a figure to transfer to tS. Much much easier to navigate a scene there, plus the effects that not even Poser 5 can do... (Particles, Volumetrics, Lensflares etc) just my opinion Kai

Allen9 ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 4:22 PM

That's the same situation with Poser and Bryce. Bryce is a far far far far FAR better place to set up a scene, especially if it is complex.

BrianR ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 5:05 PM

Have to agree with Kai there, if I'm setting up a full scene then I import to Vue 4 or tSpace6,so that's a huge reason to keep P4 live & kickin.

emerald_darkness ( ) posted Thu, 12 September 2002 at 8:34 PM

Lol, just had to add my 2 cents. Poser 4 will be staying on my hard drive for a long time, if not forever. I'm completely happy with Poser 5, really. Although the render time does tug on my nerves a bit... Anyways, the only complaint I have (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), but where oh where have the little dials gone...

I get Stephy's face in there, get to the morph putty tool box going, try to move the dials, and bammo, nothing. it ends up I've got to actually double click the little face morphs and then type in a number. I dunno about you, but I miss the dials and instant gratification when you randomly spun it and found something beautiful, lol. But hey, that's just me. :) But I guess I'll just do the morphs on P4 and the hair in P5. Oh yes, I'm loving that hair...

Ladies and Gents, thanks for your Input about this question :) I will keep poser 4 on my HD for sure for a long time either. I agreed with all of you about the reassons to keep Poser 4, I will still doing props and characters for Poser 4 for a long time :). I guess I will do what good Doc Legume said, If CLs don't sends me a freebie, I'm sticking with Poser 4. (sorry to copy that Legume) :) but I do think it has well said! :) Again I really apreciate all your input about this matter, it was really usefull for me. Best Regards Virus
