Subject: concerns about purchasing poser 5

nnuu ( ) posted Fri, 13 September 2002 at 1:23 PM · edited Sun, 02 February 2025 at 5:15 PM

im considering upgrading poser for my new pc that im getting next week......but i wanted to know a few details from some of the members who already purchased poser 5 before i decide........the main thing for me that im questioning is wether or not the new models are as good or better than the millenium models?.....is it just a matter of making a nice texture map for the new figures ?.....or should i purchase the new models as well?......or should i say screw it and just purchase the models and stick with poser 4? .....if anyone could respond it would be nice.......but from what im seeing....it seems there are some negative feed back wioth poser 5 nnuu

Legume's summation of human nature is spot-on, as always. Michael and Victoria have been around a lot longer than the Poser 5 figures, so they have more stuff available. On the other hand, the P5 figures can use the Michael/Victoria textures with minimal adjustment (other than the eyes), and they have a good starting variety of clothing in Poser 5. And of course, there's more to Poser 5 than just the new figures.

About the best way to answer your question is with the tried and true tech support answer, "It depends". SHORT ANSWER- You will likley buy it at some point anyway, get it while it's on sale. LONG ANSWER- So far, My experiences have been pretty good with a few bumps in the road. But as with any new application there are some things about it that do stuff very weird. Entropic stated it very clear when he suggested that the biggest problem is the users attempting to get too much too fast. Figuring that since they are vetran poser users all the P5 stuff would be old hat, and that CL did everything the community asked for the way they asked for it. There are some cool new features in P5 and some changes to what would be the poser4 looks. Some are cool, others are a little tricky and some are complete mysteries written in greek, backwards. The big thing to remember her is that for however long P5 has been worked on, it was worked on in complete secresy, and completely cut off from everything. So the things beta testers did and what they reported back to were under the constrains put there by CL. If they had not, the application would never have been released, constantly being revised tweaked and reworked. What that means is now that it is out. Real people are using the application under real world situations. Meaning a few tousand different types of systems and configurations. different OS and environments. And the individual abilites of the users. So, If you are one of those folks that climbed under the hood of poser and became familar with, learned, looked at, how files work how all the details interrealate, morph targets, conforming figures, on and on. Then your transition to P5 will be more or less "Smooth" Meaning you will be able to fugure out why transmaps in P5 work differnt and bump maps and all that. This does mean looking at the manual sometimes, and a whole lot of trail and error. But, if you do that then you get more out of the application. Since it is new there will be bugs, some real, some imagined, some that will be fixed, others that will never be. So if you wait, you may give up a chance to help mold poser5 the way poser4 was. Pay a bit more when they bring up the price (investors want to see a good return.). If you get it now, You'll have many failures, many "Why won't it do what I wants", and just as many "Gee, whiz, that's cool" happen to you. So the choice is yours, Play big, or stay home.

Go for it. But treat it with respect. Read the F manual and understand it. Don't jump the gun. It's going to be great. Look at Pokeydot's renders and others. They've had it for less than a week. Q

The more I use Poser 5 the more I like it. They dynamic cloth is really, really nice. The hair looks very promising, but I haven't spent much time with that feature yet. I think it was worth upgrading, but I'm also glad that I have Vicki and Mike. The new P5 characters have some useful face morphs, but they lack all the eye, mouth, nose, etc. morphs that the Millennium characters have. But I'm sure that people will soon start making these kinds of morphs for them.

The mesh content is great. So far, I'm not impressed with the new render engine. The hair has promise. I can't figure out the dynamic cloth yet, but I'm not blaming that on CL. (I somehow managed to get Don to drop his shorts trying to use dynamic cloth!) The collision detection sounds great, but I haven't had time to play with it. (And this weekend I'm busy! Wah!) I think it's worth it just for the content, especially after the morph masters play with Don and Judy a bit.

*I somehow managed to get Don to drop his shorts trying to use dynamic cloth!* LOL, Crescent! I managed to put dynamic cloth on a sitting Judy and I wrote down the steps I did to achieve it in the attached thread, you might want to check it out. I wish there were more tutorials in the manual on how to actually do all this stuff.

"the main thing for me that im questioning is wether or not the new models are as good or better than the millenium models?" The new models are MUCH better than the P4 models, and they CAN compete with the Millennium Figures - because of the Face Room. However, the standard P5 figures are not as good as the Millennium Figures - however, they do not have Face Room compatibility. So, while they are not as good as the MilModels, they're not far behind, because of the Face Room. ".....is it just a matter of making a nice texture map for the new figures ?" They come with wonderful maps, in P5. "....or should i purchase the new models as well?" I would do this. Get Mike and Vicky and Steph - you won't regret it. Get P5, you won't regret it. Get the best of both worlds. However, it may take you a little bit to save up for them. "......or should i say screw it and just purchase the models and stick with poser 4?" I would probably work towards getting both. You can choose which order. Most of the negative feedback are just learning curve complaints - however, you may want to make sure you have some memory before you get P5. The complaints about the slowness are valid, because it has new features that require more power. I sure could use a 1GB RAM, Pentium 5 right now . . . Ben

Legume was not trying to confuse you, nnuu...he was pointing out that you will not probably get a clear consensus from the population here. Many people are having no trouble whatsoever (other than retraining) and would buy P5 again even if it cost twice as much. Others are encountering difficulties and their response ranges from "Oh darn.." to "This sucks!"....if you are unsure, ignore the comments for a week or so, then read through for the general consensus. I am sure that many of those whose negative comments are the result of impatience, simple mistakes, or mismatched operating systems will have figured it out by then.....Maybe I will be one of them....if I get enough dough together to get a new computer....I'm sitting here at the starting gate with my unopend P5 CDs and a woefully underpowered machine still running Win95...... Scarab <-well......I LIKE Win95!

Scarab, This one. Steinway? is that a story about a Piano or an author somewhere between Hemmingway and Steinbeck? cheers, - TJ
