As the human crew member works on refueling the IISS Starchaser (Imperial Interstellar Scout Service) the Aslan scans this uncharted planet. What should have been a routine refueling is about to turn into a life or death struggle. Even routine in the Scout Sevice can be dangerous, one must always be on guard. Mostly Bryce, no postwork. Figures from poser, hair is all Bryce using metaballs and terrain. Field glasses modeled in Anim8tor.

Way cool. I love the whole thing and I am SO impressed that you made the hair with metaballs and terrains!

Great colors, great pose, fabulous work!

Great work! Just how did you make the hair with metaballs and terrains??? I have so much to learn.:)

Aldaron ( ) posted Fri, 20 September 2002 at 6:44 AM

In truth the hair looks terrible for closeups but it worked for this render. The terrains are the beard, they are just clipped default terrains squished and stretched then put in place. The metaballs are on top and in back and are mostly spheres (some are stretched). Then I have a hair material that I downloaded from somewhere (may be in freestuff). Almost forgot the mustache is also metaballs.

Repost of entry with some minor changes. (wetness on hull with slight reflection and fixed some minor flaws).

I'd just like to point out one pretty obvious thing, hope you don't mind :) - both planets seem wrong, one is actually in the water, but both are on this planet X. Why? Look at the clouds, they should be in front not behind the two planets :)

Aldaron ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 7:33 AM

Hmmmm....now that you mention it. I'll have to try and fix that, a cloud plane didn't work so I'll probably fix it in photopaint. I had looked at that before and parts appeared to be in front of the planets but now that I look closer....yes I definitely have to fix it. Thanks. Looks like there will be one more update. :)

They say 3rd time is a charm. :)

Ok I wasn't satified with the above clouds so I did some more tinkering. I promise this is the last time. :) Just comes a time when you have to say you're done even though I'm still not 100% satified with the clouds.

Aldaron, I looked at your final entry again and althouh I like the way it looks and the overall concept, I cane up with a couple of thoughts. 1) the rings on the other planet are too sharp. perhaps more transparency on the ring? 2)where the tenticles come out of the water perhaps a small terrain rounded a given a sine wave "height map"? good render, - TJ

Aldaron ( ) posted Mon, 07 October 2002 at 7:06 PM

Thanks bikemouse, quite a few people have mentioned the rings. In truth there is a transparency map on them but it has fuzzy set instead of blend transparency. With blend trans it was even sharper and I prefered the fuzzy. As for the tentacles, that's a possibilty but there's actually very little movement from the tentacles. They are slowly crreeping out of the water though I suppose I could add a tad bit of foam in the direction of the wavelets.
