Don't now where you might find it, but there was a free version of Amorphium a while back, and amorphium does great text, in any true font you have installed on your computer. What might help you using the Bryce's terrain editor, is to do a little gaussian blurring in the 2D program before importing the image into Bryce.
Yup, Elefont is the easiest/best way to do this for Bryce. It's free, small(342kb), no installation, just double-click and go. Elefont makes any text (in any font) into an importable 3D .dxf file. Amorphium is good to have, just to have. Find it/get it if you can.
