Gotta agree with Niles, especially period stuff; Greek and Roman would be cool. Jack

Okay, just my two cents here.... Why does everything we do have to deal with dragons and fairy wings???

Greek and Roman...well here's Greek :) http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?ForumID=12413&Form.ShowMessage=888932

I wish there were more sci-fi stuff for the kids, things like the Outlander packages would be great for the kids. I agree with VirtualSite, fantasy stuff isn't the whole story.

seaayre ( ) posted Mon, 30 September 2002 at 1:22 PM

Sci-fi clothes for the kids would be great. Would also like to see some good period clothing for them. The little that is available is primarily contemporary stuff.

Virtualsite asks the question of the hour: "Why does everything we do have to deal with dragons and fairy wings???" I don't know if I should laugh out loud or cry in pain in response to this question, but I know I've asked the same one many times. I'm slightly hypocritical because I'm in love with the Millennium Dragon and have been known to stick butterfly wings on all manner of creature, but it surprises me that so many of us keep returning to the same sorts of post-Frazetta/post-Tolkein European-based fantasy motifs. I love that stuff too, as well as sci-fi, but I like the idea of a fresh challenge in the fantasy realm. Naked Vickie in a Temple is frankly tired, no matter how luscious a bod you give her. I want an Asian dragon, more complex than the well-known one that's already out there. I want creatures from Latin and African folklore. I know ... "go make one yourself," but I'm not yet that skilled. As for the MilKids, I'd buy 'em if there were more products out there for 'em, as others are saying. I'd also like to see a new version of them done as individual models, not derivative of others. What if, say, I want to do a skateboarding picture but don't need girls for this one image? Why should I have to buy the girls first just to buy a male kid model? IMO that's the rare example of not-so-great marketing from DAZ, whom I mostly admire. Also, while Mike and Vickie can be made to look somewhat "real," renders I've seen of the Mil Kids look very cartoon-y. The head-to-body ratio isn't natural. Don't get me wrong, they're cute, but they don't look like the offspring of M or V. As for outfits for them, I'd love to see more contemporary clothing styles in addition to all the Baroque and Old West misses and the Peter Pans and pixies. I hope this will be read as positive suggestions rather than needless bitching.

"Why does everything we do have to deal with dragons and fairy wings??? " Well, for me it is to get away from the mundane and contemporary world I have to deal with every day. Saying that, however, I'm all for the sci-fi side of things too and as soon as I can get my dragon in a space suit... Jack

Penguinisto ( ) posted Mon, 30 September 2002 at 2:49 PM

Hmm... There are in the MP quite a few sci-fi conversion kits to turn adult clothes into milkid clothes. I originally got the mil girls not because I wanted a set of kids, but for two other reasons entirely... First, my missus (ferinstance) is built very petite (110lb and 5'3" tall) and my attempts at making a Vicky to match those specs usually ended in abject failure (or worse, broken mesh). It was easier to take the PT mil girl and 'grow' her out to adult specs, so to speak. As a bonus, I have a set of kids I can add to a scene if I wanted to (BTW, it doesn't take too much to make the milgirl into a 'milboy', so long as you're not really picky about the abscence of the kid's 'equipment', which I have no use for anyway. It will OTOH take a few magnets and careful morphing to add the hint of testosterone to its face.) Also, the Mil Girls are a lot more flexible than Vicky 1 or 2. They take Vicky's textures, they can fit almost any hair - Mike, Vic, P4, whatever. Also, facial morphs translate very well... my little 'Kelly' fae character (which looks a lot like the missus) carries facial morphs that I originally made for the adult vicky. (This should suffice as a reference.) Err, as for the fae/dragon thingy? I dunno; I guess we're just looking to out-populate the VIAT syndrome ;) To be honest though, I don't have the dragon, and have no desire to get or use it... and, as I look through the galleries today, I do see a lot of sci-fi coming along, and a whole lot of renders that aren't like anything you'd find in an AD&D players' manual... IMHO, things have gotten more towards the surreal than towards stock fantasy, though I notice that the usual "look at me because I got BIG BOOBIES!" syndrome is still in full swing. :) Oh yeah, BTW - if you're wanting ethnic, there's no shortage of supplies in freestuff... including my own Audra skin... (P5 even comes with a sweet P5 afro, too). sigh... I wish Serge Marck still had his stuff up - he had a TON of conteporary Milgirl clothes up for free. Keep your eyes peeled, though - he's rumored to be putting out a CD soon. /P

"Why does everything we do have to deal with dragons and fairy wings??? " The answer, my dear xoconostle, is of course that we are in many ways socially conditioned (even in our own fantasy productions.) And over time dragons and fairies have, through constant reinforcement, come to be the mainstay residents of the "collective unconsciousness" of Western fantasy...but you already knew this. bored waiting for the P5 patch, --lb

"Why does everything we do have to deal with dragons and fairy wings???" Indeed... but I think I'm even more tired of armors and goth stuff. EVERYTHING is goth now. Gothic this and gothic that. :(

VirtualSite ( ) posted Mon, 30 September 2002 at 4:18 PM

Why should I have to buy the girls first just to buy a male kid model? IMO that's the rare example of not-so-great marketing from DAZ Are you kidding? It was brilliant -- you have to buy two products to use one. Sorta like triple-edge razor blades. :) Well, for me it is to get away from the mundane and contemporary world I have to deal with every day That's nice. But it doesn't answer why it has to be the sole thing we ever consider doing with this stupid program. Escapism is fine, but some of us still use Poser for more practical purposes, and it's next to impossible to justify to an art director why your illustration of the business world has the office secretary looking like a refugee from a Grade B fantasy flick. Frankly, I'm surprised anyone makes money from generating more of this fantasy/sci-fi/gothic/escapism stuff: the market is hopelessly glutted now. What more could you possibly add that would be even slightly fresh or original? But try to find stuff that people actually wear, and you're usually SOL. What is out there hardly ever gets the attention in construction detail that you find in the drooling parade of "fantasy armour" outfits. I'm learning how to model, and my first project? A decent suit jacket for both the defaul characters and Mike. Right now, what's out there leaves a lot to be desired, even the one from DAZ. So screw it, I'll make my own. Then I'll rescale it for Vicky, give it an alluring transmap, and call it "Vicky's Naughty Little Peekaboo Jacket". It'll make a fortune.

jarm ( ) posted Mon, 30 September 2002 at 4:26 PM

Will the Peekaboo Jacket have a Gothic armour mappack?

xoconostle ( ) posted Mon, 30 September 2002 at 4:48 PM

Virtualsite, from the perspective of maximizing capital, of course you're right (about needing to buy the girls before buying the boys ... jeez that sounds weird.) But from the perspective of one who must budget their monthly purchases, it's sort of a turn-off. I'm far more motivated to return to DAZ as a result of their super-generous offerings, such as the discount on the MilDragon, temporarily free Lo-Res Vickie, or the current Lo-Res Mike/Steph pack. Lordbyron, very astute response, I'm all for the collective unconscious. :) Just want to point out that the original question wasn't really mine, I just quoted it and ranted.

Oh, coool - VS is back asking the same boring questions as always... If you don't like faeries why are you a member of Faeriewylde?

Jim Burton ( ) posted Mon, 30 September 2002 at 7:04 PM

I tend to make stuff people actually wear, well, maybe supermodels at photo shoots, but actual supermodels! I don't know why, I just never had all that much intrest in making gothic/fairy/dragon/Star-trek/S-F stuff. I did do a Roman Geneal set for SMV but it never got finished, it will be eventually, I think.

VirtualSite ( ) posted Mon, 30 September 2002 at 7:24 PM

If you don't like faeries why are you a member of Faeriewylde? Gee, it's Punto, who fails to actually think on occasion. What a surprise.

Penguinisto ( ) posted Mon, 30 September 2002 at 7:55 PM

Punkti - you behave. (/me wags finger...) Besides, you should know by now - VS is stalking me. Why, he's lurking in my refrigerator right now! In the lunchmeat drawer, next to the liver loaf and cheddar slices! (okay, that's not entirely true - I mean really, I'd never keep liver loaf in my fridge.) Oh, wait - he posted here before I did. Damn. Now I gotta think up a new conspiracy theory! 'course, I do recall a certain fellow posting a render of Oberon (y'know, the grand poo-bah of faeriedom), and a fae in a tux, and... but I won't say nuttin'. Me, I'm big into faeries. They're whimsical, they're cute, they have a nature all their own, and they won't leave pizza boxes and dirty socks strewn all about the place. What could be so unattractive about that? Even my dog leaves bigger messes, and he has the fear of God when it comes to avoiding messes (well, he actually has the fear of my newspaper, but I digress...) IN EITHER CASE! You two behave, or I open up a can of molten unseelie faerie dust-laden whoopass on the both of you! Now - back to the daily wear... If you ask Imranshah and Fishnose very nicely, perhaps they can resize/remap the Posette bidness wear like they did a lot of other Posette clothing stuff thus far (And I think that includes some of the casual wear... check Free Stuff to be sure.) Also, out of some frightening sense of creative experimentation, someone in this very forum (forgot who) already discovered that not only do the Gypsy Rose underwear pull down, up and sideways like real underwear, but they can also refit to the milgirls quite easily... so there's two more pieces of clothing for 'em. You guys err, do remember that the milgirls are the topic of this thread, yes? /P

Spit ( ) posted Mon, 30 September 2002 at 10:34 PM

Well, I kind of like the idea of clothes I could use for a My Friend Flicka scene or some such. Or Huckleberry Finn. Or even clothes for a nice Victorian Christmas scene around the fire with all the presents, tree, and all. Knickers, suspenders, aprons, bonnets. I have both the boys and the girls. Of course, I love the fantasy and fairy stuff too.

VirtualSite ( ) posted Tue, 01 October 2002 at 1:18 AM

'course, I do recall a certain fellow posting a render of Oberon (y'know, the grand poo-bah of faeriedom), and a fae in a tux, and... but I won't say nuttin' Yup, I did, as well as a cowboy fae, not to mention a set of textures for fae wings I'm finishing to distribute at PP. The point is, that's not the full range of my Poser work but only part of it. There's historical work and contemporary work and theatre work and animation -- and maybe 10%, if that, could be considered "fantasy". Hell, a year ago, I was working on something that needed a teenage girl. I wasn't real impressed with the MilGirls and figured I could make the default P4 girl work. I worked up some whiz-bang morphs and textures for her, but I'll be damned if I could find anything suitable for clothing. There were a few things, but nothing of the basic, reasonably stylish day-to-day wear sort of thing. Nada. Zip. For the Mil Girls it was almost as bad a pursuit. And let's not even discuss the horrendous situation re the boys. Thank God someone gave me Mikey as a Christmas present -- at least there, I can morph with Mike's wardrobe and come up with something reasonably presentable.
