Subject: 4.0.3 question: Sketch Design Gurus, please help!

Shosuro ( ) posted Tue, 01 October 2002 at 10:52 PM · edited Wed, 06 November 2024 at 1:28 AM

Hello! I hope this isn't too terribly annoying. I have recently discovered the Sketch Designer, and I love it, but I have one serious problem-- Why does the Sketch Designer draw the inside bits of a model, like the teeth and the eyeballs? Is there any way to stop it doing this? I have tried to discover this on my own, but on a soooo slooooow machine it's a bear and a half, so I turn to you good people: how, please? Also If anyone can point me to tutorials on the Sketch Designer, I'd appreciate that very much. Thanks!

RunTimeDNA has a very good tutorial. I think it is by IronBear. He also has a D/L to add to Sketch. Tashar 59

And it's GREAT! Just downloaded it and it is so nice. Marque

Ah.... hrmm... there is a way, but I never can find the setting that does it consistently. I usually end up trail and erroring on it, which isn't much help, I know. ;[ I'll keep a note on this post, and if I can isolate which of the options does that, I'll let you know. {I know there is one, because there's a number of presets that don't draw the eyeballs and teeth like that - just a matter or taking one that does apart and checking things util locating the one that makes it stop.] Thanks Marque, beryld. Glad you enjoyed it.

See my Tutorial at this link. DL the PDF file. Ironbear, went to look for your tutorial and found the presets and read-me files, but no tutorial. Where is it? -Don

Ummm... let me grab you a link... it's in Traveler's D.S.L. Lab forum... Ah. They archived older threads. Here it is [link above] It's not strictly a sketch render tute per se... it's a tute on doing poser "multi-pass render effects" by combining the sketch renders with normal renders, with different lighting to emphasize shadowing, texture and contrast. It came about as a result of a discussion that Traveler and I and a few others were having on post work and nifty render tricks. If I can ever figure out the settings that make the sketch renderer more predictable for me, I'd love to do a detailed tute on just it. To me that's one of the most powerful and least used features in Poser 4. I've seen your presets [I think they're yours, Don?], and you seem to have a pretty good grasp on how it works. Btw... as stated in my readme, I'm not claiming sole authorship of the presets. Most of them started out life as various other presets, and then I modified hell out of them to get the effects I wanted. I'm not certain how much of the origional base still survives in most cases... I tended to go through sometimes dozens of mods and saves over time. I did try to keep the names conssitent so I could at least remember what I started from.

That is very cool indeed. Thank you both for sharing your tutorials...this is one area where I've wanted to learn more. Great information!

Marque ( ) posted Wed, 02 October 2002 at 3:13 PM

Ok, how do you get the sketch styles to render anti-alias? I turned it on in the render dialog box but still getting dots in my sketches. Anyone have a workaround? Thanks, Marque

Wow, thanks! That's a lot of wonderfully useful stuff! Ironbear, I had read your tutorial on RDNA... it's what got me into the sketch designer in the first place. I love playing with blended layers in Photoshop-- I love to muck about with the same image and many different filters on many layers, just to see what happens, so your tutorial is very interesting to me. So far I have found that if you turn the outlines completely off, either by setting their density or their opacity to zero, you don't get inside-the-head lines, but then you don't get any outlines at all either. There has to be a way, I'm sure there must be a way... I'm very grateful for your help, and if I find anything, you can be certain I'll post it. Don, thank you very much, I've downloaded your .pdf and shall have a look tonight!

Would it work to do the sketch in layers as well...one with the outlines completely off, and one with the outlines on, and then take the two results into Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, place the one with outlines on top of the one with outlines off and erase what you don't want? It's not as sleek as rendering in one step but you wouldn't have the inside the head lines.

Shosuro ( ) posted Wed, 02 October 2002 at 6:43 PM

Well, that would work, except that there is often a lot of detail-- say around the eyes-- that you would want to keep, and i would be about as much work to delete the unwanted stuff as it would be to trace the outlines in from scratch. It's such an obvious thing to want to do, I'm sure there's a way to do it, I just haven't found it yet.

What happens if you make the inside parts (mouth, teeth, maybe even eyeballs since they're bordered by other things) 100% transparant?

Before they made me they broke the mold!

Look at the settings in my 2 sets of Sketch Design samples in Rosity Free Stuff. The Sketch Design Render tool is a powerful one and a neglected feature of Poser. Photoshop, etc. runs a filter on a 2D image, whereas Poser's Sketch Design works on 3D surfaces, and 3 areas at the same time! You can even import a photo jpg as a background picture and sketch render that. More involved than photo editors, but more versatile and creative. Look too at the samples of sketch renders in my gallery at Cyber Fyber.

Hrrmmm... it can dialyn. Depends on how the preset is set up, you can get unwanted lines, and it's tricky to find just the right slider to lose them without losing others. I do some of that, and blend, but I do it outside of the sketch designer on a floater in painter, using a stylize filter from Painter F/x. And then select with an alpha channel [after going back to photoshop] and size the trransparent selection up a tiny bit sow the outlining just shows beyond the edges. Marque... the dots are coming from one of the sliders in [I believe] line thickness or line pressure(? don't have it open right now). Experiment with the line weight and style sliders til you get a line that doesn't leave dotting.. and tiny bit of change at a time. Don? Someone needs to write an aftermarket book on this thing. You game to do it? ;] I'd buy the 1st copy.

Hmmm... I will consider this. I do not have Poser5, as I am on a Mac. Do any of you have P5 for PC? If so, are the Sketch Design presets the same as P4, or are there new and different ones? How many are new? If any of you have P5 for PC and have a Mac, too... will the Sketch design files convert to Mac with Martin C's converter? -Don

Marque ( ) posted Thu, 03 October 2002 at 11:43 AM

It looks exactly the same, same names as Poser 4 presets. Marque

Ironbear ( ) posted Thu, 03 October 2002 at 7:54 PM

They're exactly the same in P5, Don, including the lack of ability to render sketch renders to a larger window without having to use the animation settings to trickfuck it. However, all my P4 presets copied over and worked with no problems. That's one of the things I examined carefully - looks like they made zero changes to the sketch designer. Which is probably good, means they didn't hose it up any. ;] Hrmmm... I don't own a Mac, and the two offline friends I have that are mac users, aren't poser users. Let me ask Diane... she uses both mac and poser. Sketch presets should convert via mac converter like any other poser file. Possibly a email to the utility creator could clear it up also...

Thanx. Now I know to proceed wtih other Sketch Render projex. Well, I can think of some changes that could be made to this feature that would really make it work better and easier for users. I am surprised no improvements were made, but as a neglected feature, there was not a lotta clamor for it. I have contacted CL and not heard back as to suggestions.
