Hi. Sorry about the long message, but I've been a little frustrated the last couple weeks. I haven't been too successful in making any new art lately, and the recent battling over Poser artists simply being 'compositors' hasn't helped inspire me much either. I'm finding that it takes me so long to create work that doesn't look like it was quickly thrown together that I end up losing interest in the image and never finishing it. I wish I could put out three good images a day like so many others here do...heh, I'd be happy to be able to make three good images a month. ;) Anyway, I'm going to concentrate on finding ways to speed up my work (and maybe your own too, haha), and partial poses are always a good start. So for starters, here's a hundred of them that might be able to help you too, along with 32 camera presets that you can experiment with to possibly stumble across that perfect angle you might not have discovered on your own. Big thanks to Lucy_Fur for hosting this for me! It's in Free Stuff now. Please don't start in on me about how things like this just help wannabe artists to plop together garbage art faster than ever and without any skill; I'm really not in the mood to argue about that further. Using Poser should be fun, and right now for me, it isn't. But I'll at least feel better if I know that my creations can help other artists enjoy using it. :) SnowS Hoping his pictures are worth 1001 words. Hi Snow! To have days of flaming inspiration and weeks of pitchblack "emtyness" only happens to the real artists!! ;O) Thank you!

snow this is another winner. Good poses always help me out. As for the lack inspiration, I too have been feeling that way..................... hang in there. It will return BUT in the meantime keep those poses coming!! And......... Thank you!!!!!

while I don;t do nearly enough 'art' these days your picture has perked a little something in me. Actually a question... What was the method of your rendering for those pictures? Very nice effect.

I wish I could chug out 3 good pictures a month too. I'll start what I think it going to be a simple picture just for quick fun and I end up getting all carried away. Thanks so much for the partial poses.

Nice stuff, SnowSultan, thanks! And what's wrong with being a 'compositor' anyway? :-)

Lack of inspiration is going around...it's been eons since I've been able to get anything out. Thanx for the freebie Snow. I'm sure it will be really useful. :)

I know what you mean. I started using Poser a couple of months ago, and the more I learn the longer it takes me to finish anything. I get distracted by the latest MDP firearm, or decide to try my hand at making some new textures. I've never done any 3d work before, but as I have spent the last 5 years working with the holy trinity of print design (Quark, Illustrator, Photoshop) I like to play around with things. If people would stop giving away such high quality freebies I might be able to finish something and post it in the gallery.

Snow,

Recently I got into a friendly discussion in the Bryce Forum
about the use of Bryce Five giving one an unfair advantage
over those who use Byrce Three for modeling. At some point someone said that a real artist could make their art from mud if necessary - the point being that the artist has more to do with what he or she ends up with than the tool he or she uses to create it.

What you do is art, never doubt it - except to improve what you do even more.

Thanks so much for the Partial poses. Inspiration will come back. Its the mind behind the tool (brush, camera, hammer and chisel, computer) that counts. Keep your chin up PaulC

Hey, Bikermouse! When I grew up in San Diego I took adobe from the back bank, pulverized and ground it to make my own clay (hard work!!!), then sun-baked and tinted the resulting statuary with ground watercolors. (Most of you have probably made "lamp black" by holding a china plate at an angle over a candle flame to collect the soot and added a binder; other colors are harder, but all around us.) Does that make me more of a real artist than I am now? No. It simply means that I appreciate quality supplies. If civilization collapses and the network goes down we just might be back to cave paintings. Someone else gets to grind the mud, though. ;^) Carolly

bikermouse ( ) posted Mon, 04 November 2002 at 6:08 AM

hauksdottir, Meanwhile, in South City (So.S.F.), I'd dig in the 'Fransiscan' clay behind the house (probably the same sort of stuff as in San Diego) to help with the garden and of course to build forts. It's hard to dig in let alone grind, but then that's why we should treat horses and the like well - so they can do some of the work for us should the electricity and petroleum powered tools go away. But then the clay just an analogy rathe than the point. I do know where to get the ochre though, but its a long walk through the basin and range provence of Nukevada. - TJ

SnowSultan, I cannot thank you enough for these partial poses and all the other extremely useable free things you have given this community in the past. I don't think there is anything of yours I have downloaded and not used. As I was making my coffee this morning, believe it or not, the "art" question was on my mind. I had not been to Renderosity yet today. I think this question is just always running below the surface of my conscious thoughts. For good or ill, my pictures are a way to show my inner soulscape to the rest of the world. Maybe it is not art, but I would not give it up. The imagination is painful when not given a mode of expression. And these poses of yours will only open up more vistas, more doors. Thank you so very much for your kindness. Kimberly

not the materials used. By these simpleton's arguement, there are not worthwhile writers! After all, they didn't create the paper, or pens, or pencils, or words. Man, they didn't do a thing. Just threw it all in a pot, stirred it up, and poured it out. RIGHT! Don't let them get you down. Thanks for the freebie. shadowblade

Question; How many names should he have put on the painting? :o)

Orio ( ) posted Mon, 04 November 2002 at 9:42 AM

Yep but HE self was the renderer. He didn't purchase (hire would be more appropriate) a "third party painter" (Poser Bryce or whatever else) to render his picture. That's no small detail. Actually that is what makes the difference!

mabfairyqueen ( ) posted Mon, 04 November 2002 at 9:46 AM

I compare Poser and other 3d apps to the art of photography. You don't physically render the photo. The camera does that. Does that mean the photo isn't a work of art, artfully captured by a skilled photographer? Poser is a lot like that, but also has elements of other artistic mediums required to produce a really quality piece.

SnowSultan ( ) posted Mon, 04 November 2002 at 9:49 AM

Wow, I didn't expect this many responses! Thank you all so much for the support, it means a lot. Actually, inspiration is not so much my problem, I've got probably 5 WIP images I never finished on CD and another 5 ideas in a .txt file. :) It's just the fact that it takes me so long to do anything. Every attempt at an image feels like a job, not anything I'd do to try and relax. If I don't get it out of Poser in two days or so, it just becomes a hassle. Anyway, I'll keep trying to find ways to speed things up and I'll be sure to share anything I find in doing so. :) Odeathoflife, you mean the thumbnails above? I set the figure's display mode to Hidden Line and then selected the body parts that were affected by the partial pose and changed their display mode to Texture Shaded. To make the whole image, I just stitched together four screen captures of Poser Explorer. Anyway, thanks again for all your kind comments and I hope these poses can be useful. If you've sent IMs to me, I'll respond as soon as I can! Take care. SnowS

You're patiance personified compaired to me, If I've gotta go back a second day I can hardly stand it, rather put in one 15 hour day and finish in one sitting, though I hear it from the girlfriend "You've been sitting here all day and gotten nothing done! "Third party painters" ... heh heh. Ever study 17th century European painting? (Or for that matter, how Warhol's Factory worked?) Some of the attributions indicate "third party," indeed. "School of Raphael," "After Caravaggio," "Associate of Rubens." A student's work was frequently attributed to his master's name. In merely the past twenty years, several paintings formerly attributed to Rembrandt have been determined to be the work of someone close to him. Not that anything short of modern forensics would indicate otherwise... This Poser art argument will never be fully won by anyone except the people who strive to improve their skills and to personalize their work as much as possible at every level. Even using nothing but pre-bought models, textures, and props, you can still do your own lighting, posing, mise-en-scene, etc. IMO the art is in the effort and inspiration, not whether or not you had a hand in coding the rendering engine. Please. On the other hand, I really, really respect painters who make their own pigments. :-) Many thanks, SnowSultan! The partial poses will be a very useful addition to the painter's palette.

Rhiannon ( ) posted Mon, 04 November 2002 at 1:26 PM

Wow SS, these partial poses are incredible, thanks! And don't let it all get ya' down ... I've probably got at least 8-10 WIPs on my machine, the oldest of which has been there at least two months. Some images I know I want to finish eventually, but don't have the heart or inspiration, so I just set them aside. Other days, I'm fired up and finish something in hours ... just depends. "Black nights" come to us all, when there is no inspiration or motivation ... it'll subside eventually. The arguments regarding whose art is "worthy" of being called art are all just "mute" and a waste of precious energy. If the end result is pleasing and someone likes it, who gives a big rat's ass how it was created ... at least that's how the artists I cavort with (digital AND traditional) see it. Arguing about it is an ego trip expressing itself. Blessings, Rhi

lol!!! snow.... did you seriously say that you wished you could throw pictures together that didn't look thrown together and all yours that DON'T look thrown together in an hour take you several days to do??? i'm sorry, that's just too funny. :) and to combat the stigmatism that poser artists are merely compositors, you've put up some new freebies that people can composite together?? :D thanks, snow! i just love partial poses :)

Snow, Forget about that debate! I myself used to do lots of clay scupting, Origami, etc... Then i discovered Poser & i never looked back! Poser permits me to see my visions on the screen! And i have Fun doing it! FUN! That's the Key Word! And Yes, it's Ok to do it just for your own enjoyment! That's what Art is! It's the Most selfish Act!! There's maybe 200 pics i did, that i will never show in the galleries, cause they were just about exploring my nightmares & subconcious. So, Poser is therapeutic too! Well, i hope you get your "Groove" back! When you hit bottom, there's only one way to go & that's Up!! :-) Oh! And thanks for your contributions!! Marco

LOL bloodsong, now you've got me so confused, I don't remember what I meant! All I know is I want to make pictures that look like what I usually make, but not spend a week on them like all the ones I have made...or something. ;) "and to combat the stigmatism that poser artists are merely compositors, you've put up some new freebies that people can composite together?? :D " Haha, nah...I figured maybe these will save some time so that people can then concentrate on not making their images look like they're composited together. :) Thanks again to everyone for their kind words. I'll keep them all in mind the next time I start on an image, feel like giving up, and think about making something to give away. SnowS

Snow, If your render is going to take a long time, schedule something else while it's rendering (like sleep) - a leaf from the Bryce Community. Make low res versions of models / textures first. to see how they look. create your own personal library of poses, lights, cameras etc. Wish I could think of more, but you'll come up with your own ideas on how to speed things up I'm sure. - TJ

bloodsong ( ) posted Tue, 05 November 2002 at 4:17 PM

bikermouse! the render doesn't take a long time, getting the figures and textures and pose and lighting and camera angle takes a long time! geeze, if we could sleep through that....! ;) i do sympathize, snow. that mike arizma drives me nuts. how in the heck one guy can make SO many perfect, full, rich images is beyond me.

AWESOME!! AWESOME~!~ The perfect gift for those of us who are Pose challenged!! Also read a great posting at our Eclectic Guild Forum at EZboard on this very topic. Post was by English Bob, relating 3d art to photography. Although we all know that photography is art, the artist doesn't rally create the topic, they interpret it and choose the perspective they would like to present. Words to that efect, much more eloquent by the author. But I relly like the comparison.

bikermouse ( ) posted Wed, 06 November 2002 at 1:48 AM

Hail bloodsong, but . . . I have spent as much as three hours just positioning one light and more time to get the right color and intensity and then starting over as I couldn't get it to work right - multiply that buy several lights, characters, textures and morphs and even without modeling you're at well over two weeks for one picture - that doesn't even account for the time it takes to make a model, to learn how to make a model and the years it takes to get good at it, so I do know something of the time and frustration involved in doing quality work. I haven't gotten as into it as deeply as you have yet, but then I'm not through with it either. I'm sorry if I touched a sore spot with you, but give me some credit for having a brain in my head. boy, where'd that come from - I must have needed a rant too.
