Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 21 6:06 am)
"Those who fail to learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them" Surely that's the point, history is littered with the lessons people & nations forgot, like the first world war :) Though I'd be surprised if Studio did animation. Especially when we, as a comunity, have only 12 or so animators. Seems like a waste of effort. I'd be happy with a basic posing tool that supported some of the shader tricks that OpenGL is capable of. A Phsyics plug-in would be cool, but I don't expect a P5 replacement. later jb
Actualy, Studio would be a boon for animators. As others have pointed out above, the hardware-accelerated preview mode with true transparency looks excellent, and should be able to output animated test sequences in no time at all. The improved performance might actually encourage others to experiment with animation, since the time factor is such a big turn-off for many.
Just jumping in quickly to say that we do intend to have animation capabilities as well as Posing. Taylor Wilson our CTO and lead programmer on the the project has a very strong background in animation. He has programed several highend animation tools for his previous employer House of Moves. Our goal with DAZ Studio is to produce a one hour made-for-television Christmas special. We are also hoping that if the animation tools are intuitive enough that there will be more than 12 or so animators.
I am glad that several people have pointed out the importance of not expecting too much too soon with DAZ Studio. On the other hand it is also fun to see that our scope for the project is in line with what many of you are looking for.
Thanks to everyone for all of the excitement shown and kind responses to the post. It is encouraging to see that so many people are excited to see what we are developing. We will try to keep everyone informed on the progress as well as a projected date of when people can start playing with DAZ Studio as we get a little closer.
Sincerely,
Dan Farr
My features list: -- one-key instant 'Nekkid Vicky in Temple Riding Dragon while Brandishing Pulse Rifle with Bryce landscape' generator that simultaneously forges membership termination requests to all major Poser forums before renders of it can be uploaded. -- automatic apology letter generator addressed to your Mom should she ever see one of the ruder Mike renders using default face (i.e., yours). -- BVH motion-suit export. Not import, export. I wanna see what the current walk designer's settings for MilMan does to a human pelvis.
How do we sign up to beta test this app when it is ready? Are you going to send out a email or is there a link we can sign up at?

Interesting... I know from the first post these particular morph settings are supposed to make Victoria 3 resemble Anna Marie Goddard, but has anyone noticed that the figure more closely resembles Marta Kristen than does Judy from Poser 5? Just an off topic personal observation that may merely illustrate that I'm "stuffed full of wild blueberry muffins." Sincerely, Bill
Tempt the Hand of Fate and it'll give you the "finger"!
I CAN'T TAKE MUCH MORE OF THIS...I'm already lost in the learning curve of Poser 4 and Bryce 4, I'm lusting after Poser 5 and I don't think my brandy new HP Pavilion will run it without a major brain rework for RAM, and now THIS! AAUGH!! I admit, I want it too...I wonder if there'll be an Educational Discount Package so I can have the university bookstore order it for me and put it on my financial aid??
Thanks Dan for the reassurance that we animators haven't been forgotten. There's things wrong with P5 I know but, there's an awful lot right with the animation tools. I have absolutely no doubt that I'll be a customer but I certainly won't be giving up on Poser either. Hopefully, the two will compliment each other...
I don't know if you've seen my request before but I'd like Bezier-based animation. I'd also like markers. And I'd like to be able to hide parameters that I'm not animating. Goodness, I sound like my kids: I want! I want! I want! So I'll add something extra: Please.
Before they made me they broke the mold!

It looks so good! And so does Victoria 3. I'd love to see the ablity to render small areas of the scene also - so you can change eye colors and see the effect without rerendering the whole area. File Management where you can actually read the whole title of something and also break up various categories so one can organize and find things according to one's own use patterns for different items. And raytracing. :-) Wow - it looks great! -dg/Skeetz
"Just wanted to put in my $.02 I have been a loyal Mac user since 1984 and I will NOT be going to OSX. period! Apple sold us out by making a 'windows wannabe' where I can't customize my system anymore. So I guess it's Poser 4 forever... ps: don't tell me to 'try it you'll like it' been there, done that." ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Well you are resigning yourself to living in an anachronistic wasteland of outdated software, hardware, with no ability To run two major process at one time( 3Drendering +typing a letter in simple text), sooner or later computer users will have to wake up and realize that they simply will NOT be able to run Windows 98 or MAC OS9 for the rest of their lives :-) OS9 Is DEAD!!!!!! OSX is what will save the MAC platform from oblivion i was watching the "extra content CD of "Starwars episodeIIattack of the clones "and one of the animators at ILM was previewing an animatic for Lucas on a MAC. needless to say it was not running OS9 ;-) thanks DAZ!!!! for embracing the future and supporting the MAC with an OSX program. - wolf359 founding member of the " 12 animators"-
wolf359, couldn't agree more! I'm running OSX on my Mac since 6 months and I use my OS9 partition for Poser4 only... And I was expecting DAZ would support OSX instead of OSX. So let me join the choir singing "Thaaaaaankyouuuuu DAZZZZZZ." ;) I won't buy P5, since I don't feel very confident with works made using P5 so far. Hair looks like Spaghetti and after reading all those "bug here, bug there"-threads I decided to wait for DAZ's box of miracles. ;) Looks like the right decision to me. I can wait and I hope they take their time to keep on providing mellow products in the quality we're used to. OSX rules! :) Phil
Ditto On Wolf359. The only reason I'm still running OS9 is Quark and Poser...duh. I've been watching the whole Poser5 thing and have not been impressed. If you guys are gonna go right to OSX and release it simutaneously (please please please) I'll be saving my Xmas money for you. Jon ps. noticed you guys are already hinting at an aqua-esque interface. Woo woo! OSX rules!
Yes it looks and sounds good but in the words of Harvey Keitel in Pulp Fiction, "lets not start sucking each others d**** just yet" Let them get on with it and time will tell if its the answer to everyones dreams. In the meantime, stop crying about all the things you don't like about Poser 5 and actually get stuck in and work with it. Its a very powerful program with very powerful, as yet, untapped features but like all great software, theres a learning curve so everything is not going to be instant. Take some time to learn each room and you'll start to realise just what this baby can do. Rik
An Anna Marie Goddard morph for Vicky? Cool! When was she Playmate-of-the-month again? Sometime in the late 80's, I think. Can we look forward to character morphs based on Penthouse Pets and Hustler Chicks as well as Playboy Playmates? If so, when does the voting start? I have a long list of favorites I'd like to see as Vicky models. Anna Marie Goddard has a pretty decent site- it's not "porn", but since there is full nudity it is definitely "adult". And since her site is "adult", I can't post a link to it. And you thought Poser stuff should be used for more than pin-ups! At least DAZ has the right idea- give people want they want- virtual models of real models!
Wow, this looks amazing! Sorry, I am a little late to this party. My computer crashed on Thursday and tech support says it won't be working until the end of the week. :( So, I came to work on my vacation to get on a computer and see what is happening on Renderosity. (Am I a Poser addict or what?) Anyway, my wishlist item for this would be import/export to 3D Studio Max. I would also like to add my voice to those who have asked that this product not be rushed. Like many others here, I am eager to get my hands on this, but I would rather wait an extra month or two and get a "finished" product rather than a buggy one a couple monthes early. Looks great, Dan, thanks for sharing! Jay
Another thing I would like to see for this is the ability to work with Vue. I bought poser 5 and was going to buy Vue but it keeps asking to locate Poser 4's exe but I don't have poser 4 anymore on this machine and the demo I had is not working.

Wow!!! This is the first time I followed up on this "Mysterious DAZ Program", and the least I can say is WOW!... Linux support. Just the thing I want to hear because I'm sick of M$, and the only reason I'm still on windows is Poser4. My favorite suggestions are the 3rd part plugins and "modules". Here are my requests, but I highly believe DAZ will follow through with them: * Support the community as you have done, don't put a leash on us like CL and Microsoft (for the windows users). * Keep it inexpensive for the hobby users (like me). * KISS method ;) * Stability!!! I know this has been mentioned, but this is important. Don't rush through this. Good things are worth waiting for ;)
OMG, the parallels between this thread and the pre-P5 release jubilations are hilarious. With the obvious exceptions of jjsemp and similarly-tempered people. I hope Dan's got some good flame-proof underwear when DAZ come to release this, because judging by the reaction to one still image of the product's interface (kinda reminds me of the "Mike-with-hair" UI shot from the CL thread) people WILL be dissapointed. Some of them, anyway - it's bound to happen (you can't please all of the people yadda yadda). Having said which, Poser5 with OpenGL support and some interface changes (hey, I want some of the unmentioned features like a decent face room, and hair etc. too!) WITH stability would be welcome indeed! I'm glad animation is to be supported, tha tbeing my main area of interest (yes - there's already more than the 12, some of us are just, erm, shy?)
I agree, but DAZ has an opportunity here to take thier time and properly test this new package and NOT release it until its ready for general use. if it takes a year ,18 months etc so be it. and they appear to have coded it from scratch not tacked on some dodgy third party hair, cloth and material modules to existing "hand me down" OUTDATED legacy code from metacreations. (Meta who??) if they ignore the shrill pleas for a release date and take their time they might be successful. I can wait
I skipped a few messages, but I think DAZ will go the same road as CL if its money crunch time... If developement funds are short, what do you do??? Sit on the program and get nothing in return, or release it, get some quick money, and pray ??

It's going to be interesting to see how they can really deliver an application with one developer- Taylor Wilson. How are they going to test DAZ studio? Add on new testers? Build a network of external testers like CL did for P5? And test the openGL on all those vearious hardware cards as well? How about the ability to edit figure data like you can with in a CR2? Is every tool builder that makes a Poser compatible product now going to either go out of business- morph manager comes to mind- or be forced to revise their tool to now support two different file formats and forge a split in the community? And even worse, is DAZ going to use some form of closed and protective binary file format for their content that won't be user editable- that ties into old the DAZ debacle related to their strangle-hold on distribution of CR2 data related to their content. Oddly enough, that heat on DAZ was extinguished by the California Dreaming thread. Remember how that discussion just mysteriously stopped when CL gave us something else to talk about? What a community we are. And it sounds like DAZ has a real "community" building product here ;)
Vitzer (or metamanix or whatever your real name is) ;) While I question the sincerity of your concerns, a response to your post may still prove interesting to others. First of all Taylor Wilson is the lead programmer, not the only programmer working on the application. I am not sure what your source of information is on this, but it is quite wrong. Secondly, I am glad that you brought up the question about the ability to collaborate with outside developers on DAZ Studio. DAZ Studio is going to be an open source application specifically so that outside developers can easily develop for it. It will also have python scripting completely hooked up within the application rather than just being patched in. DAZ Studio is being designed 100% to provide opportunities for programmers and developers alike. We recognize that through community collaboration this application will be much better then we could ever make it on our own. We are already working with some of this communitys prominent developers and plan to do what we can to work with others. Considering what we are planning to do with DAZ Studio, this community can look forward to many very interesting and groundbreaking surprises yet to come. You bring up a good concern related to the beta testing of the application. We have some great plans that will involve a very large external beta testing team. The scope of this plan will be announced sometime in the very near future. I have said it before and will say it again. Our goal is to help grow this community, and our plans on how to do this are very powerful. (William Sheil seemed to have similar thoughts on this subject.) Anyway, I guess people will better know our intentions as we get further along with DAZ Studio. Again, we dont want to create inflated expectations at this point, but we dont think people will be disappointed with our plans. Sincerely, Dan Farr
Dan, I'm flattered! I'm just plain old vitzer. Got Taylor's name from your post above and your website. And he's the ONLY developer listed on your site. I'm not a developer though. Does your "outside developer" plan mean that I won't be able to cut and paste the content files? You think there will be a spinout here that'll be a Daz studio forum and a poser forum? that seems like a split to me.
