THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Opening PC Bryce file on a Mac

Hey there .. does anyone know how I could open a bryce file from a PC user? I have done it a few times before no problem with Bryce 3 but for some reason I can't open this file. Keeps on wanting to read it as a text file andunfortunately it wasn't an obd or whatever ... Thanks

try renaming the file and remove the .extension, thats how I get Mac Bryce files to work on a PC, I rename them and give them an extension like .OBP, etc FT

Renaming the thing as a obp only got a white square when I imported it ... Might try no extension what-so-ever ... Otherwise i might have to write the guy and hope he is still there .. thanks

You may have to open the file in ResEdit and "type" the file for Bryce 4. Usually, B4 will open the file without doing this, though. -sk

Ugh .. ResEdit ... I will look into doing that

That's odd. Usually no problem. The file may be damaged, or you may have a lurking extention conflict. Try booting with all extentions off and then opening it in Bryce. If still no go, I'd suspect a damaged file.

Triarius, I have had one or two files (out of dozens, at least) in the past that refused to open until I added a resource fork with the appropriate creator type. It may well be that this problem indicates a file with damage. Occasionally, though, ResEdit can be used as a can opener to get the file open. -sk

I've done the same thing. I think sometimes the Mac system does not interpret the file info properly - the resource fork is there, just unrecognized as such. This can be tweaked with ResEdit or any other file editor. I also think that sometimes the PC file is not saved "properly" and the resource fork is lost. Since PC files don't use it, it won't matter on a Windows machine, but you have to add the fork for it to open on a Mac. GoM (pardon the abbreviation)if you are uncomfortable with ResEdit, there are a number of resources on the web that offer tutorials, or you can ask a Mac type to walk you through it. If the resource fork is missing, ResEdit will add one when it tries to open the file. It will ask you if you want to do this. Click yes. BUT ALWAYS WORK ON A COPY OF THE FILE.

There are also some less daunting shareware utilities that can do this: File Buddy Filetyper TypeRighter Go to www.macdownload.com and search the utilities.

I tried looking at it in BBEdit cause I have that at work (left over from the download) but I got gibberish for the most part ... Have to try it at home with Res Edit if I can ever figure out what to do with it. Dont think I could last time and just ended calling it txt files but never saw or could figure out a thing. I am an artist not a tech person at all. Managed to find a work around to get to BBEdit but had no clue what I was doing either way. I sort of found a substitute castle for the picture I am working on but thanks. The file I was trying to open was a cool boolean castle in the PFO freestuff by R. Buck ... Maybe someone could see if it is just me ...

GoM, I had the same trouble with that file. What you need to do is open a known good Bryce 4 file in ResEdit and check its Type and Creator codes. You do this under File> Get Info within ResEdit, if I recall correctly. Note the correct codes from the good file. (I'd tell you what they are, but I can't remember) Open the castle file the same way and add the correct codes. Save the file and you're done. Make sure you have a backup of the file. The other apps I mentioned are also good for this, and may have an easier UI (File Buddy is the one I'm familiar with). Good luck. -sk
