Subject: P5 Reflection testing

Two 2d squares at right angles to each other, reflection and a silvery tex. Wasnt expecting the 4th steph but was pleasantly surprised with the reflected reflection coming out well! (You can see the edges of the right mirror in the left one.) Trying to make P5 go kersplat but it held on like little a little champion :) Took aaaaaaaaaaages to render, (bout 2 hrs i think on dual AMD MP2000+) I'd have to leave it overnight if i added hair, displacement, advanced mats etc! Gawd I wish P5 had SMP support. But on the plus side i can play GTA3 whilst rendering :) Erm, default pinup steph, default lights, everything off in rendering except raytracing (obviously). No postwork, look at that left elbow *shudder*. Now for a nekkid vicky in a mirrored temple...

Wasnt expecting the 4th steph .... * chuckle * That's how corner mirrors work, y'know. Two reflective surfaces, three reflections. When I was experimenting with faked reflections in P4, I had to put in a little more effort and add that reflected reflection, also. Displacement shouldn't slow things down much, but reflections and dynamic hair can be killer. Cheer up, 5GHz machines will probably be available by this time next year.

That's a nice test. I probably shouldn't do this and I don't want to really step on the thread, but this image took 55 seconds (yes, seconds) to render in Bryce. Two flattened cubes at right angles with a mirror material and a random texture applied to diffusion. Textured gremlin with bump.

But it's just default lights, default render settings, and smaller. It would take longer if I used premium settings. But still, two hours seems like an awfully long time.

I agree; two hours does seem like an awfully long time.

I just ran my own timed test in Poser 5, using a similar scene and setup. It rendered in a little under three minutes in Production Mode with shadows, and I don't exactly have the most robust system on the planet.

Still using a Pentium 3-850MHz rig, 128MB RAM, Win98FE (for now).

O_o Looks like i might have to bother d/l the patches after all. Havent done it so far cos I have had NO problems with P5 right out of the box. If it aint broke don't fix it :) Soluble Hamster The one, the only, dissolvable rodent.

LOL! God, yes get the patches...ALL OF THEM. The speed increases are tremendous from the boxed version. It's pretty reasonable now (though still not exactly fast)

A suggestion to all above, If you are using Hi Res texures, I'd recommend turning off the FireFly render option, Use texture filtering. This speeds up rendering times immensely. Buried deep in the following thread are several tips I provided over the weekend on setting up render options. Have at it and I hope these tips help you out with future rendering, -Brian
