Just thought I'd post a glimpse of something I've been working on lately. I wish I had more time to devote to this because I really like how it's coming along. Modelled in Carrara 1.1 after an oak roll-top I've had for about 20 years. So far there are eight drawers in the bottom, plus two writing trays. Eventually, there will be 12 more drawers in the top, all fully functional. (right now, just the drawer fronts are up there). Still have to model the rest of the drawers, and some hardware (hinges for the wings, and a lock). Texturing is not complete on this image, but the drawer fronts and desktop look like I want them. Wasn't sure if anybody would be interested in this, but it's my first model of this kind of detail, and I thought I might give something back to the community, if anybody wants it. I'll probably end up providing a seperate version of it just for Bryce, because my drawers won't stay grouped when I import the obj. (that sounds kinda sick, huh?)

WOW, this is a great model FW, I would love to get a hold of it. I've been doing a few interior scenes recently and you can never have enough furniture. Can't wait till you've got it finished. Well done. Catlin

WOW, this is gorgeous! I too would love to have a model of this. Of course I'd love having the full size RW version too, but can't have everything. I remember a roll top desk at my father's but haven't seen it in years. It wasn't as nice as yours is. Hope you find the time to finish this one, its already beautiful. Ang

FWT, I saw the render you posted in C Forum - Must take a while to figure out how to get everything to model right since there's a lot shelves and drawers involved. I knew someone once who had a rolltop similar to this. It's looking good! - TJ

That is beautiful...Sharen

That is really beautiful work FW. If it is not finished, I really can't wait to see it done then!

Really beautiful and probably a masterpiece of freebie. :-) Greets, Jimi

FW, how long do you think it will take to finish the model and are you only working on it in your spare time?? And speaking of time, how long has it taken you to get this far? Full of questions me. 8) Catlin

It's an awesome desk...I hunt for a desk like this each time I antique! LynnDee

FWTempest ( ) posted Sun, 08 December 2002 at 11:45 PM

thank you all... to answer your questions, catlin, I've probably been working on this, off and on, for 3 or 4 weeks. I work nights (at work right now) and have a part time job during the day, so free time is somewhat hard to come by. Probably another week or so and it should be done. My main goal with this model was first to see if I could do it. It's not a very difficult model, really, not many 'organic' shapes, which is why I wanted to put as much detail as I could into it. I wanted to provide something that a beginner could simply download and throw into a scene and have it look good, and also something that a more experienced user could tear apart and use just what they need (i.e. don't really need all the interiors of the drawers if they're not going to be open). I'm also hoping some ambitious soul will take it and convert it to poser format so that every drawer opens and closes with a dial, or help me do it. btw... the reason that I was thinking of providing this in .obp format as well as something more universal is that I've found that some of the parts need to be smoothed after import and others look much better without it, and the groups don't stay grouped. Thought I'd save my fellow Brycers the trouble of figuring all that out.

lsstrout ( ) posted Mon, 09 December 2002 at 1:51 PM

FWTempest that is a beautiful model and I appreciate you wanting to keep everything moveable (and simple) for us Brycers. I hate getting a model and finding out I can't move anything unless I ungroup the whole thing and even then it doesn't always work out. Are you going to throw caution to the winds and try to do the rolltop? Lin

Roll Top Roll Top....Awesome work dood. and free...now your sharing the wealth :)

catlin_mc ( ) posted Mon, 09 December 2002 at 2:30 PM

"Are you going to throw caution to the winds and try to do the rolltop" This is what I was wondering about, (here comes another question or two), how would you go about making a roll top that could be rolled up and down in Bryce? Would you only be able to have it open or closed? Oh, the mysteries of the Universe. Catlin

That is one gorgeous desk! And free.....thank you!! :)

FWTempest ( ) posted Mon, 09 December 2002 at 11:35 PM

I think that there will only be an "open" version. (for now, at least). My desk at home is rarely closed. Modelling it wouldn't be that much of a problem... multi-rep the slats along a path. But I think animating it would be another matter, one that I'll leave until I'm a little better at this. I agree with you, Isstrout. I've downloaded too many models that look good in the thumbnail, but are relatively useless when you bring them into Bryce. Not from here, of course... :o) As of now, I've redesigned the hutch slightly, and added a couple of parts to make it look more like there is an actual roll-top that is open. This morning I'll see if I can cut some grooves in the wings for the top to slide down (if it were going to slide, details, details, details). Should be available soon. Might have to find someone willing to host it for me, as the unzipped .obj file is around 5Mb so far. I think that might be too much for my aol free account.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Tue, 10 December 2002 at 3:54 AM

What size would it be zipped? Could maybe help if it was a little smaller. Catlin

FWTempest ( ) posted Tue, 10 December 2002 at 4:57 AM

don't know... haven't zipped it. And I guess that's the one inherent trouble with high detail meshes. I've done everything I can during the modelling process to keep polys to a minimum while still maintaining the level of detail that I want.

derjimi ( ) posted Tue, 10 December 2002 at 11:05 AM

FWTempest, it would be a joy for me to host it - size nearly doesn't matter, so it can be 5MB, 10MB or even 15MB. I have some paid, fast webspace where I host my own freebies, and its bandwith is unlimited. :-) So just write me a mail, if you want - hosting is no problem any more. Greets, Jimi

catlin_mc ( ) posted Tue, 10 December 2002 at 12:05 PM

Well there you go FW offers all round. Ttops and I could probably host it too, but if derjimi is busting with spare space....go for it. Catlin

FWTempest ( ) posted Tue, 10 December 2002 at 3:42 PM

wow... thanks jimi. I'll definitely be getting back in touch with you about this when I get this thing finished.

derjimi ( ) posted Tue, 10 December 2002 at 3:59 PM

You're welcome. :-) Greets, Jimi
