Sure! is that like a reverse skeleton? I've seen that used on the heel bone. Also, in the video "The Making of Ryan" there is a technique where they build two skeletons, one has a lot more control actions like for the wrist and then they animate the control skeleton to move the puppet. Way to advanced for me, Chris Landreth won an Oscar for best animated short on that one. Adam

Honestly, I don't think I ever did much animating in Poser. A few walk cycles and that's it! Most of my work was done with a close up on the actor's face in the default position. I only moved the character when absolutely necessary.
As for the animation tools in Maya, there is this xyz axis lock that make it way easier to move your character around the screen and know where he is. This wasn't available in Poser. There are some helpful tools like playblast that let you preview your animation real time.
Right now for my own enjoyment I am studying dynamics. I used to play with a plugin called Metaform which generated particles in Poser. The tools in Maya go way beyond emitting flames, like making hurricane simulations or 3d starfields. I'm interested in making a crowd simulation where little animated characters are mapped to the particles and then just move around the screen un-keyframed.
The thing that gets me is now I have to model and rig my own character instead of just downloading Michael. So, before I put all that effort into it I need to spend a lot of time planning. Then you can set the IK and joint limits for the kind of animation you are doing. In that sense it is easier because you have a custom puppet for a specific purpose instead of one size fits all. So if I want him to walk with a gimp I can rig it that way instead of keyframe it.
My big mistake with this character is that I built him way to muscle-ly. I had a lot of deformation problems in the shoulder and latissimus area and I learned a good lesson from that. As a result, I had to rig his arms and legs so they wouldn't move too far.
Another thing is that I made the head skeleton too skimpy, so that when he turned his head a lot the eyes would drift.
I think Poser is a great tool and I would like to go farther with it, especially since Mimic does 70% percent of my animation work for me. But I was discouraged at the lack of documentation, one thing I am very happy about Maya. Also, when I signed up for class this is what they gave me, so I didn't have a choice. It was either split my time between Poser or just focus on Maya.
I can study Maya for a long time and never get to the end. I just got back from SIGGRAPH in LA where I took about 7 Maya master classes. That was a very cool experience because the presenters are people working at Weta, Sony Imageworks and TBS.
This semester coming up I have Final Cut Pro, Visual Effects (mostly keying live footage w/After Effects and Motion) and, ahem, Aesthetics and the Rennaisance.
One more thing. Maya Unlimited 6.5 for student pricing cost me about 360. Retail off the shelf is 6,999. I would recommend that anyone interested go down to the local community college and sign up for an art class, then go buy Maya at a deep discount!

I think my Poser days are over, and sadly the Sketch Boys as well. This summer was my first semester at the Academy and Maya 1 was my first class. The soundtrack was not a requirement of the project so I just threw that in last minute to add some interest. Also that music video was just the old talking head style relying totally on Mimic. I didn't even pose the rapper dude! He was just standing there Leonardo! I want to get a lot more creative with Maya so maybe I'll actually get some character animation in there next time.

Thank you very much for your comments. I am really grateful to everyone who has watched my stuff and especially to those who have made remarks since it is the feedback that has kinda guided me along here. I just started making these cartoons in Dec. 2004 and it is very satisfying. I fixed the website problem with the left side navbar and I put a new flash animation on the main page. I am going snowboarding for a week here so take care!

Adobe Premiere Pro makes the leader and the color bars automatically. They are just sound and video calibration tools. I thought they would give the site a "broadast/film" ambience. I exported the leader as avi and opened it in After Effects to make a swf. The bars I just exported as bmp and resized in Photoshop, although it has that monotone beeeeeeep that goes with it. I felt that was a little too much. Also, the flying Camaro I made in Poser 4 Pro Pack, exported as avi and then brought that into Acid Pro 5 to add the drum track, then converted to swf in After Effects.

I think you are right! Hey, right after I posted that last night I thought of some additional comments I wanted to add. I use SONY Acid Pro 5 to make my sound files but for the video stuff I use Adobe products. My guess is that they would want to promo someone who uses their Vegas Video. So, if I switch software I might have a chance at the big time! I thought there was something else I wanted to say but I guess that's it.

Hello, and thanks for taking the time to check out my cartoon. I am not a legal expert, however I am a CPA, so here goes:
By submitting material to the site SONY gets to use my stuff for free in certain (promotional compilations, advertising of the site & their products) situations bla, bla, bla. However, Item C of the Audio Visual Submission Agreement states:
C - OWNERSHIP
You will retain ownership of the copyrights and all other rights in and to your Materials, subject to the non-exclusive rights granted to us under this Agreement. We will retain ownership of the copyrights to the compilations or other promotional items we may produce. You are free to grant similar rights to others, both during and after the term of this Agreement.
The promo comps are not sold, they are included free with certain product sales.
So, my answer is, no I don't give up the copyright of my material however I do grant SONY certain license to use my stuff in exchange for storing my files on their site.
Sorry to sound so stuffy, I deal with this legal/contract stuff everyday. I am trying to migrate into cartooning though. Thanks again!

Thank you very much, I got a little sidetracked with the new year and all, plus the occasional life issues but I am pleased with this one. I think that sometimes I use the wrong camera motion at the wrong time. Like if there's not a lot of action I should use slower camera movement and save the "odd" stuff to create intrigue. I also got a lot deeper into After Effets for the title creation and I developed a website to go with it. I took your advice about quicktime compression. I exported a QT movie at 320x240 (as opposed to the 160x120 version) and got a huge 100+mb file, very good quality. Then I opened it in the QT Pro player and stripped the hinted files, set the compression for DSL medium and mp4 format. the file came down to 10 mb! I was amazed! anyway, a little inseider information, I think I am going to take a break from the "Sir Spandex Part 2" and focus in on "The Diner" for this week. I got some cool cars, upgraded to Michael 3 (the day before they gave it away) and of course, the diner. By the way, that was me playing the guitar during the flying dragons.

Good morning, fellow renderer! I appreciate the comments so much I can't tell you! I just bought the castle ruins and michaels changing suit to make some authentic backgrounds and costumes for this cartoon, something new! I am trying to digest all this information. I still haven't written the script so if you have any funny ideas there I still have time to integrate them. I have tomorrow off from work so I'll spend most my time working on this. I will also put a short description so people don't expect one thing and get another. I am looking forward to making this one! AJ

Someone else was disappointed too, because it was called Alpha Romeo. I was going to change the title but I got caught in an upload marathon last night! Oh well, live and learn! I'm working on this week's episode, "Sir Spandex", about mideivel knights in shining armor. I guess I should leave a little description of the cartoon, along with all my ramblings. Speed, that's the key! I will use some speed in this next one. I don't want to give it away, but I am working on a flying dragon. I just get a catch phrase in my head and then I start writing. Like, for ice cream, I was laying in bed and thought "i forgot my wallet" and then I started writing and it all came out. AJ

That's a killer idea! What I have been doing is this. I have been rendering everything at 720x480 so that I can burn a DVD with the final products. I'm not ashamed to admit I'm still kinda new at this so I don't have all the bugs worked out. So, if I know I want a sorenson 3 at 160x120 with a keyframe every 15 frames, I could render everything that size! WHOO HOOO!!! AJ
Thread: Episode 4 The Sketch Boys in "Alpha Romeo" | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Sir Spandex it is! Ok I almost understand the sorenson codec. I am going to look for a sorenson 3. My keyframe options are set for a default 5 and I haven't messed with them yet. I have been using the default Microsoft 1 video codec from Poser. I will experiment with image files and uncompressed .avi. I agree, looking back some of the scenes would have a geater impact with a background, I am working on that. The Bryce backgrounds I used in this cartoon were each about 10 seconds long and took around 5 hours each to render. I then imported those as avi into poser and rendered as a sketch. As far as changing the name, I was going to hustle home and work on that tonite but I got caught up in this upload frenzy, I hate that, I feel all bug eyed. So, with that it's on to this weeks episode, "Sir Spandex"! AJ
