Adsk bought Alias in 2006 and released Maya PLE 8.5 in the 2007. PLE 8.5 continued to be available until around the end of last year.

Fusion and Houdini may still offer the non-expiring learning editions. If so you should get them asap - maya discontinued its learning edition and that may be the trend. Both products are excellent and can provide a good foundation for 3d and visual effects. Eyeon’s youtube channel alone will keep you busy for weeks.
It is often the most expensive software that has the best documentation and 3rd party learning resources available.
Good luck

Thread: How can I make thick objects (.obj) in Milkshape? | Forum: 3D Modeling
"Threre really is no thick 3D objects."
Thickness is an important consideration because it sets the boundaries for material properties like refractive index, subsurface scattering etc. The box you mentioned could be filled with air but it could also be filled with wine, blood, glass, diamond etc. Distance between the surfaces, their relative placement and material definition can give the appearance of thickness.
This is not really specific to Milkscape, but one way to represent thickness, for say a bottle, is to duplicate the surface and scale it (proportionally constrained) in just a little – then attach the surfaces. For polys that would be to grab all the faces then extrude them in (locally) just a little.

I have added a couple of renders and moved them all to their own album so I can free up the drop box.

They are mysterious to me as well. I expect they are to anyone without extensive training in math. But I don't mind, the science guys are great at writing interfaces for us normal people - as long as I can get them to make nice surfaces then I'm happy.
Btw, I'm just an enthusiastic hobbyist, so these videos would not provide a good foundation for nurbs training.

Hmm, not ringing any bells, guess there's been too much beer between then and now. I would like to watch them again one of these days. I will have to see if they are available on DVD.
Thanks

I decided to try one of these for myself - something I guess I should have done before. I realized that the size of the videos will be larger if you go to youtube and search for, nurbs coke bottle, then use the links that go directly to the videos. I'm not sure why that is but I will look into it.

Looking good. Btw, I thought these things were called Eagles not Metaprobes. And if I remember correctly they had a whole bunch of them. I think I remember them losing five or six in one episode. But that was a long time ago so I could be way off:-)
Come to think of it, I think I remember having an Eagle Estes rocket.

Of course, sorry about that. Here is the link. Be sure to leave annotations enabled.
Thanks

I don't care how cool it is, if it costs a half a million dollars, I don't need to talk to someone about it.
Fwiw, I have no idea what kind of relationship you have with your uncle, but if
my nieces and nephews decided to enter 3d and chose something other than Maya, they would be cutting themselves off from a very valuable resource, not because I would not be willing to help with 3ds, xsi or whatever, but because I only know maya - he may even have access to software, people and jobs.

I get very annoyed by companies that don't know what their stuff costs. Please post back when you get a price.
