Quote - vunerable? far from it! this site is actually one of the best for NOT having spam. I can show you sites that get 10-50 spambots a day attacking.. and they are not as high profile as RO is.
I don't dispute your figures, but I've never seen this on sites such as CG Talk, for example, and I'm there more frequently than here nowadays. Which doesn't mean it doesn't happen, just that I haven't seen it, and that's a pretty high profile site. Not on C4D Cafe either, probably the world's largest C4D site.
In any case I stand by my comment: while you can't prevent small-scale spamming, it should be possible to prevent these mass spams like the latest one, where it seems as if every forum may have been spammed, leading to a very large number of messages being posted in presumably a very short time. A simple count of posts-per-day with an automatic block would stop it before it got too far.

Aren't your programmers able to do something about these bots posting what must be hundreds of messages in one go? I would have thought that a simple flag could be set when a member posts more than say 100 messages a day, indicating that it's probably a spambot. At which point you could have it automatically block any further posts pending a check by a human.
As it is, this site appears to be remarkably vulnerable to these mass spam attacks.

Thread: Law & DisorderTenn. law bans posting images that "cause emotional distress" | Forum: Community Center
That's hilarious. Horror movies are now presumably banned in Tennessee, since they are deliberately intended to frighten the viewer.
I'm neither an American nor a lawyer, but I very much admire the 1st amendment to the US constitution. I imagine this law will survive for about a microsecond when it hits (as it inevitably will) the supreme court.
So stand back and laugh while you can.

Quote - Im not stating this as fact, but I would think allowing files to be uploaded into the forums by the general populace in any form would pose a security risk.
As it is, anywhere a file is uploaded outside of gallery images, it must be manually checked and approved...way too many forums here for the staff to check every thread every day in order to spot the uploads...
That can't be right, though. In the forums at present we can upload .jpg and .txt files without anybody checking them. If I want to upload a .zip file, I can do it - as long as I rename it to .jpg or .txt first. I don't really understand why it would be more of a security risk to allow files with the .zip extension to be uploaded. After all, I could upload an executable or script file by renaming it first. Just seems illogical; and if it's that great a risk, why does every other board allow it?
My impression is that it's just a default setting in the board software which no-one has changed. Could it be looked at again?

Quote - All you need to do is append ".txt" (or any other extension that is acceptable) which anyone downloading can strip off.
I know you can do that, as I said in my original post. Because you can do that, it's impossible to argue that not allowing .zips is some kind of security measure. But it's annoying that you have to do it at all, when every other forum I visit let's you upload .zips. I'm not bothered about the size limit, there clearly has to be one.
I'm a bit surprised by the absence of any comment from a rendo admin to this question.

Thread: CS5 and plug-ins | Forum: Photoshop
I haven't got CS5, but on CS4 the 32-bit version of Photoshop installs into program files(x86)/adobe/adobe photoshop cs4, and the 64-bit version goes into program files/adobe/adobe photoshop cs4 (64 bit). In each case the plugins go into the plug-ins folder of that directory. They don't (at least on my system) go into the common files folder.
But if you do put them there, I guess it would be program files(x86)/common files/adobe/plug-ins/cs5 for the 32-bit version and the equivalent folder in the program files/common files hierarchy for the 64-bit version.

Are you running 64-bit CS5? The alien skin plugins don't all run in 64 bit yet - Xenofex is one of these, so is the eye candy collection.
If this isn't the case, you might find more answers on the alien skin forum, http://forum.alienskin.com/.

Thread: Can someone explain "Image Ready"? Do I need it? What does it do? | Forum: Photoshop
If you upgraded from CS2 to CS4, and on the same machine, you probably still have IR in the Adobe/Photoshop CS2 folder. Although there isn't the convenient button to switch between PS and IR in CS4, you should still be able to use IR independently.

Thread: Can someone explain "Image Ready"? Do I need it? What does it do? | Forum: Photoshop
To expand a little more on what ImageReady is for, it was originally intended as a standalone program for editing images for the web. It included such things as image slicing and the ability to save the slices complete with HTML code to reconstruct the image on a web page.
What you were meant to do was do most of the actual bitmap editing in PS, then switch to IR and do the slicing and dicing. There's a button on the tool palette in CS2 and earlier to do this (and one in IR to switch back to PS), but it was slow and a real pain on a laptop with limited memory. In CS3 and above most (but annoyingly, not all) of the functions of IR were included in PS itself, and in CS3 and above IR is no longer included.
For more info you can also see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imageready.

Thread: How are those fancy actions REALLY created?? | Forum: Photoshop

Take a look at the book in the link. It's dated 2004, but still valid AFAIK. It has a CD with a lot of actions on it, but the book goes into quite a lot of detail about what actions can do, how they're made, and so on. The 'Look Inside' feature of Amazon gives you the first chapter too look at.Steve

For making that sort of pattern, the best filter I can think of is Eye Candy, by Alien Skin (see link). The reptile skin filter in particular might do what you want. Unfortunately, it isn't cheap, but maybe the demo would be sufficient for your purposes?Steve
