Yes, you have it. The answer was a bump left switched on. This was PERVERS' initial suggestion, for which I am endebted. Many thanks to all. By the way, any idea how to delete redundant textures from the menu?

Huolong: Many thanks, but this isn't it. The texture is correct on the screen in it goes wrong when rendered only. I have checked "applies to whole figure" and have just repeated the process to be sure. It is now apparent, with different lighting, that both texturtes are being rendered.

You've got it! It was the bump map. Thanks a lot. As for deleting redundant textures, re-starting Poser doesn't do this, does it? I've restarted a hunded times and still have unwanted textures listed in the menu. Have I misunderstood? Anyway, thanks again.

Yes, excellent diagnosis. I recently raised accelerator speed from zero. I've now dropped it again and the problem has gone away. (I've no idea what the accelerator does but zero didn't sound right; I won't monkey with it again!) Many thanks.

Problem solved. This was a very good suggestion and enabled me to do some controlled experiments. At first, no shadows in the new scene. But clearing the old scene showed with greater clarity where and what the lights were. A bright overhead infinite light was canceling out the four more distant spots, so even close up and with 1.00 shadow set they were all too feeble to cast a shadow, even with the other spots switched off. Moreover, switching off the infinite light hadn't helped previously because the four spots canceled each other! This was a great way to learn about lights. Thanks to all for the help.

But the odd thing is that, in this scene, there's no "shadow" EITHER on the ground plane (to help positioning) OR after rendering.

Thanks, I'll give all this a try. (By shadow color I meant the button on the right that sets a shadow's color from white to black.)

It's not those things. Funny thing is it happens ONLY WITH THIS SCENE, which I created. There's no shadow with ground plain displayed, whether using ground default texture or a custom texture. Something's wrong and I can't figure it.

Right. But all the styles for the magnet zone element obscure the figure except Outline style, which is the default, and silhouette, which is no more distinct. I hoped to know how to make the Outline more visible. It continually disappears and is always hard to discern.

The display modes affect the figure also. Any way to make the MAGNET ZONE more distinct or visible while keeping the figure in more natural smooth-shaded or texture-shaded mode?

Problem solved. CuriousLabs now have an installer with the Poser patch. I installed the patch right over my existing files (with a copy on another drive for safety) and everything now works just fine.
