Hey Soulhuntre. Actually I was saying you will not need to export...I wasn't suggesting that Poser would ever take on Max or lightwave or would ever want to. Basically a huge amount of Poser users are hobbiests and renderers...and I am sure CLabs want to keep it that way. Why? because quite simply there are a lot of them and they buy lots of extras, because they like making artwork maninly...many of them dont know what a caustics or photon mapping renderer is...or could care less. Now there are a lot of people in this market and they spend a lot of money, albeit in small amounts. Thats why Daz and Renderosity have done so well, to make Poser a fully pro app that has appeal for the pros would kill off this market and CLabs know this only too well, as does Daz and R'osity. In fact Chad from Daz wrote ages ago that Zygote sponsored Daz to build exclusively for Poser because they saw the market was there, he also said they would never do that for Maya because there is no market there...it appears to be the same for Max and Lightwave as well. So to make Poser a heavy duty battle ready app for the pros like Max would be suicide and they know it, and I never suggested that. What I was saying was the Firefly renderer is a step in the right direction and that when its tweaked and built on you wont necessarily need to export to Bryce and Vue...provided the facilty to have environments is there in Poser...which it will be in time...thats all. On the contrary Alias Wavefront have often shown signs of trying to crack this market that Poser has (by being a sponsor at R'osity, halving the price of Maya and releasing Maya learning edition and so on, they want a slice of this market..I know that for a fact .) It seems obvious that there are more hobbiest than pros and that means selling products cheaper to more users and keep the app relatively simple, the pros already have Max and Maya, so why try to sell Poser to them...they'll never buy it. But also as far as Discreet and Newtek are concerned...you can only sell so many upgrades to the pros before you have to start looking elsewhere to sell your products, and you can bet they will also look at hobbiests and semi pros and thats where Poser is at its strongest...so why change? Nope Poser will never compete with Max...nor would it want to, as far as I understand it's going in a different direction, and thats what it needs to do. Cheers Harvey

Hi Guys. Thanks also Sparkle and Tirjasdyn for the compliments on the hair and stuff. Sorry to Spit and jackson if I gave the impression that you will never want to use other apps, what I meant was you will not necessarily need to export...of course you may want to export to other apps because that is the way you get the best artwork for your taste. Now from what I can gather the co operation between Clabs and Corel and others for the purposes of interaction between Poser and other apps like Vue and Bryce is not that great (at present anyway). I dont really know why, but I suspect that its to do with money demands and so on. Its a bit of a bummer, but there are ways around it and one way is to make Poser much more powerful and capable of doing environments...I am pretty sure CLabs are interested in this and it would probably be easier for them to do this than for corel to put a posing facility in Bryce. Bottom line is people will work how they prefer, but over time things change and at least having a renderer like the Firefly renderer is a big step in the right direction. Personally I would like it to be a lot faster and have better anti aliasing and also Global Illumination and perhaps caustics as well...but hopefully in the future sometime. In the music world there are similair problems with competing companies...recently I upgraded to Emagics Logic 5 and spent quite a lot of money only to be told a couple of months later that they were bought out by Apple and will no longer be supporting PC users at all so I lost all my money on it. Of course there was a huge backlash as they have a huge PC user base, but could we do...not a lot. At least CLabs are taking responsibility for Poser and stomping the bugs and are listening to the user base...I can tell you that is pretty rare. Thats basically why I have some faith that despite the fact that Poser 5 needs a patch, Clabs will come good with that and they are headed in the right direction with the upgrade. Its hard sometimes to see the long term vision of these companies but at least they seem to have one. Cheers Harvey

Actually I build world kits and have worked in Poser 5 since it was in Alpha Beta. I can tell you that once CLabs has refined and tweaked the firefly renderer...you will not need to export to render. Based on what you know now you may find that difficult to believe, but its true you will not need actually need to export and render. Now some people may argue with this point, but untill they have spent at least a few hundred hours in Poser 5 playing with the renderer and material nodes its difficult to take their comments really seriously. Why??? ....because the Firefly renderers power lies in understanding the materials and nodes and lights..thats why. Being based on the Renderman REYES renderer, this renderer has a huge power that is not immediately apparent and it's not just in the Render options as I mentioned. What this means as people start to realize the power this renderer and the material nodes harness they will start to produce scenes that you have never seen before in Poser. I dont work for Clabs nor do I get a cent from them, so this is not some company hype.. it is a fact. Take for example Bryces renderer...its a basically sophisticated raytracer with good antialising...but in Poser 5 it has displacement mapping in the materials...what this means in laymans terms is that you can place a texture on an objecty and according to the map you can distort it in 3d space at render time because the renderer and materials are that powerful. You can create clouds using this technique ...out of something very simple like a sphere...Bryce cannot do this actually...and just htis alone is a very important feature. Of course the Firefly renderer is not perfect in its current incarnation, but it has the right approach to be built on very quickly and I am sure CLabs will do this. OK it doesnt do Photon Mapping or real world global illumination but neither does Bryce actually. Regarding worlds in Bryce...well basically they consist of meshes and materials mainly and this can be easily be done in Poser 5. The hair generator alone can generate grass on a flat mesh...I dont believe Bryce can do that either. Sometimes we have to give up old concepts to embrace the new or get left behind...I'll bet in a year or so you wont hear of many people wanting to export to Bryce or Vue anymore...of course if you can do all you wanty using this technique then great. But it pays to have an open mind...thats also part of creating. I have been programming and writing music with cutting edge software tools for at least 15 years...and I have constantly updated and put up with bugs, because I wanted to learn. Sure I've had my headaches...but at the end of the day I did learn and I am glad I did. Keep an open mind Poser 5 has a few bugs, buts its good points far outway those and Clabs will be dead keen to stomp those bugs I am sure, they welcomed bug reports when it was in Beta and they seem to have the same attitude now. Cheers Harvey Mann

I HAVE BEEN THRU ALL THIS KIND OF STUFF BEFORE. wITH METACREATIONS,RAYDREAM STUDIO< CARRARA AND EOVIA...PROMISES PROMISES!! People always believe the grass is going to be greener based on hints and promises, but it's never quite like that. Maybe Daz's program will be great...but maybe not. Its taken Steinberg 15 years to write a truly solid and stable music program (cubase SX) with no legacy code and they have a ton of experience behind them. Daz have had little or no experience in writing apps..(maybe they will hire people that have...I dont know) But I can tell you this...I for one wont be pinning any hopes on Daz writing a bug free version one of a program that is supposed to solve your problems that you think you have. Words are one thing, reality is quite another. Personally I think Clabs will straighten out Poser 5 a hell of a lot quicked than we will see a perfect version one of Daz's new app that is bug free. Lets get a shot of reality here. HMann

Eric...I have to totally agree with your tribute. So many CEOs these days are distant and give vague promises at best as to when their particular software packages will ever be fixed to meet the users needs. Most of the time you cant even talk to them, cause they are too busy being important. Steve and Co are not like this and we do appreciate it, he's kept Clabs as a cottage industry and we appreciate this also and recognize that it's a rare thing in the fast paced world of software development. Congratulations Steve and all the crew at CLabs...Poser 5 is a wonderful program, we all wish you much success. Cheers Harvey Mann

Hi....Looking good.!! About shadows, what you have to do is place a spotlight quite near the object you want to have shadows and turn the angle end down to about 13.000 and maybe have the angle start to about 10.000 anf have the shadow map to about 3000 and the shadow intensity to about 2.000, dont have the other lights too intense, and disable shadows on most of them. I was playing around with a scene earlier that has very intense shadows using this method. Unfortunately Posers lights are not made for larger scenes and this is why it's not as easy as it should be, but there are plenty of workarounds. I plan to get a list of things that the Poser engineers need to look at and send it to Steve Cooper at Curious Labs. Harvey Mann

Oh one more thing...Poser Pro Pack definitely has a bug in the lights, it's explained in the Manual, but its related to distance end....bottom line is Poser 4's lights work better, but no need to uninstall Pro Pack, I have both on my system and theres no problem, however it's better to do the final renders in Poser. Another point is that Steve Cooper told me a while back that in the new version of Poser there will be Raytracing (amongst other things)so that feature alone will really help in setting up better world scenes. Thanks Again Harvey Mann
Thread: hmann's 3D World Kit | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Hi...I am glad most everyone seems happy with the worldkit. Just to clarify a few points, the 3d World Kit is designed to be quick to set up a scene, but you can also set up a very individual look as well, just like people set up individual looks for Mike and Vicky, the thing is you have to play with the lighting and the morph targets and the sky presets, and the ground textures as well. About ground shadows...theres been a few questions about them, the first thing is that way I set them up (the lights I mean)is by no means the perfect way, in fact I attached the shadows to the key light, but they are a little hard to see, if they were attached to the sunlight then you would have a better chance to see them, there are all kinds of possibilities here, but it does require some experimentation to get the best results, basically your shadow giving light should probably be the brightest light in the scene, but in my default light setup its the key light that has the shadows and it's not necessarily the brightest light in the scene. I hope to build a lot more for it, and believe me there will be (as there are already) plenty of options to create your own individual look, personally I was frustrated with Bryce, its a great app but you cant animate in it and the skies always bugged me. I am pretty sure the movie Final Fantasy used a sky dome (you can tell by the mapping)and the simple reason is that the real sky looks like a dome. The reason I didnt add tree's was because there are so many trees around already that are easy enough to import into the World Kit, probably what I may concentrate on is bridges, more textures for the ground, rocks and plenty of other things. As it took about 3 times longer to build than I hoped (originally I thought it would take about 6 weeks ...but to be honest it took quite a few months and thats working at about 6 hours minimum a day) because there was so much trial and error in getting it to look right and getting the textures to map properly, not to mention large scale morphing etc etc... I read earlier on...someone was saying that they could have probably built it ...but I have to say... I wouldn't like to build it again...no way, to much time and too much experimenting that dragged on for weeks and weeks. Anyway I really hope it works well for you, and if enough people buy it I definitely want to expand it and make it very comprehensive in the future. Thanks Harvey Mann
Thread: Question about hmann's 3D Worlds Kit | Forum: MarketPlace Customers
Doc. Daz went ahead with this without informing me about the 20% off deal. It was a genuine mistake and misunderstanding, they thought I knew that they do this to all new items, so they didn't tell me. So I have written to both the Mailout person and the broker and said that I dont want them to go ahead with this under any circumstances, and I would rather have it pulled from Daz altogether than sell it at this price, because it makes all the previous buyers feel like they have missed out and therefore they have every right to be peeved about it. I told Daz that in my books the customer comes first (They seem like nice people and I am sure they are in agreement with this ) so now all I have to do is wait untill they are back in the store and reply to my emails. I dont know if they work on the weekends though. Bu I am sure they will do the right thing and rectify this, I should have been notified before the mailout, and now I know I have written to them immediately to stop it going ahead. Regards Harvey Mann
Thread: Question about hmann's 3D Worlds Kit | Forum: MarketPlace Customers
Hi Doc, Thanks for the question. No it's not geared to people who dont have these programs. I use Bryce myself and as you know you cant really animate a figure in it, also you cant pose a figure in it really unless you kind of set up the figures pose in Poser first then export it. So 3d Worlds Kit is made for Poser in that you can use all the power of Poser and it's characters in a real 3d environment, this is the major difference. Personally I hardly use Bryce anymore, its a fantastic app and I love it, but as I said you cant get Poser figures to run around in it, even if you could, you still have to export and goof around to get it happening, this is all right inside POser. Other differences are Bryce is a lot more powerfull because it has Terrain generators and sky generators and so on (so is Vue De Esprit) This 3d World Kit has better looking skies than Bryce though (because they are real sky maps mapped on a huge illuminated dome) and they look and respond in a very real way. The ground has subdivisions and a different type of mapping which makes it also look very real, as you can see from the images. But Bryce has material generators that tile fractal patterns over an infinite plane and this is very versatile,. but often does look very real up close. The Poser 3d Worlds relies on maps or skins (like we use on Mike and Vicky) now this is a lot less versatile but a lot more realistic if done properly. I am hoping that if it gains momentum that some of the very talented artists will do more grounds and sky textures for it, currently in the main kit there are 2 main gound themes...sandy and grassy (autumn-leafy grass also grass and asphalt path and plain grass)and ten sky themes. The potential to build on this is enormous and as I said earlier the main difference is that it is right inside POser. Hope this helps Harvey Mann

Thanks for the comments guys, I am really glad you like it. The images look great especially since they were done so quickly. The comments are much appreciated and I think as you play with the new morphs more and more you will be very happy with a lot of the new looks you can now achieve. It's been a very long and hard task to build and update this product but this makes it all worthwhile. Thanks again! Harvey
Thread: IMPORTANT!! Front View of Total Hair. | Forum: MarketPlace Customers
Thanks Xena, I am still working on the morphs ...there are about 40 new morphs now, total styles and animation morphs as well as pose morphs. Generally it's getting a lot more powerful. Speak to you soon Harvey
Thread: Total Hair part II | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Well sorry to all the Store Owners for the controversy over the hair. I have basically been writing emails all day. I was completely unaware of what was going on and I am not into ignoring anyone...I simply was away, in fact I still wouldn't really know what was going on in the forums if one of the store owners hadn't alerted me to it. What amazes me is that none of these people with bitter complaints had emailed me at all even though I put my email address in the notes. As far as the renders in the promo go...I got them very easily using exactly the same set of lights I included in the package, so anyone that is having problems with renders should send me theirs and tell me how they are doing it. I am immediately looking at the problems of front renders and plan to address that and any other minor issues. However I worked on this hair for months and it definitely is not JUNK as some are insuating. When you try to build a hair package that is versatile in terms of morphing and so on there has to be at least a little bit of willingness on the part of the user to experiment at least a little. I recently bought the Poser Pro Pack for $580 Australian including shipping and GST and it has screwed up a few things in my Poser setup (for example all the male figures now have no hips) BUT I am not about to start a thread about it and bash it on the forums when I can write to Curious Labs directly. There is a simple solution to the legit problems some people are having with some strands in Total hair and I am looking into that immediately (when I can get time off from writing emails). I have written emails to all the buyers informing them of this and I can honestly say that all the replies I have had today have been very encouraging. What is frustrating to me is that those with serious complaints have never bothered to email me...amazing! Instead they would rather go on a bash on the forums, which to me means they would not rather go to the source at all and fix the problem but prefer to get some controversy happening instead. The only complaint I received (while I was away) about the hair was from a girl who was having some trouble with front renders and 2 emails from Pervers who wasn't complaining bitterly but wanted to know how to get a better front render with the curls. In both instances I did all I could to explain what can be done considering the fact that I was not at my computer. Now I am back I am addressing the problem immediately. For any that think the hair is junk (that havent tried it) 1. The promo renders are untouched by photoshop or whatever. 2.Check out Jimi and the Strat guitars in my shop (also untouched) Here are a couple of emails I received toady in response to my post from buyers... Emails I think total hair is slick......(nice).......any improvements are welcome. Like the transmap modification HUOLONG Ironically, I bought it and was downloading it as I simultaneously was reading the Renderosity "not happy" posts. Although I have yet to be able to completely download this large file from the store, I recognized that some very talented work had gone into making this product, so I withheld from contributing to the "knee-jerk" reactions that I saw others posting. I trusted that someone as artistically talented as the person (i.e., you) who was capable of creating such a potentially outstanding work in the first place would rectify any problems with his creation. I thank you for your devotion to your grateful customers. I look forward to your promised improvements, and I would happily purchase from you again. Keep up the good work. I have been totally satisfied with your hair. The only problem that I have had is trying to get the blond textures to work. What is the correct texture combination to produce blond hair? I just bought Victoria today and only needed to increase the z-scale slightly to get full coverage on her forehead. I do, however, look forward to any and all of your updates. Thank you for a superior product! Sincerely, John Diamond
