Top black and white line layer properties: multiply. See end of this video Preview Toon Line Technique
Thanks for those suggestions. I knew about multiply, but for some reason I didn't think of using it in this application. Doh!
I'm not actually using Ben Day. It's more like a transparent watercolor wash on an ink drawing, except that the ink layer has B&W halftone dots for grey shades. The colors are solid, rather than Ben Day. (Paintshop Pro also has Ben Day tools, but I stuck with greyscale images for my experiments.)
As far as work flow, this is a hobby, so I'm not worried about efficiency. I'd rather fiddle with image and make adjustments by hand till I get just the look I want. I'm also exploring using B&W cross hatching instead of halftone dots to see what that looks like. (No images to post yet. Still exploring)

Why not write your own? Then you control the time period, the costuming, the story arc. Everything.
EDIT: you could also go all Hollywood and adapt either of those masterpieces with a modern twist. Then the period clothing would be a non issue.
I could give that a try. I could even do Shakespeare in a modern setting. hehe.
Anyway, that you tube video I did with Anime Studio (see original post) was my own story. That's why I was thinking of doing a Poser remake of it.

Oh, and what's interesting about this coloring technique is that it remains crisp and clear when reduced way down in size, like when I might want to make it a small panel on a full comic page:

Thanks to Boni and geep for the comments.
For anyone interested in old-style comic book coloring, here's good article about it that includes an image of the standard comic book color palette.

Thanks.
I first played with Poser 3 in 2002, but then set it aside for the next 13 years. Now I'm retired (software engineer) and I've just picked up Poser Pro 2014 and started playing with comic book style rendering and post processing. I originally joined Renderosity in 2002 as "fiziwig" but I forgot my password, and I don't have the same email as I used to have, so I had to re-register as fiziwig2.
My grand goal is to do a graphic novel in Poser in comic book style. I thought The Count of Monte Cristo, but that takes a lot of period costumes that could be hard to find.(AND, it's five volumes in the original novel!!!) Then I thought Treasure Island, but that has the same costuming problem. I might just re-do a story I originally did in Anime Studio back in 2008 (search you tube for "fiziwig" and watch "The Wishing Tree") That might make a decent comic book short story. hehe.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. This isn't clothing to be parented to the figure. It's a blanket thrown over a dead body, and it's not an animation, just a single panel.
Once I figured out to work animation, I made sure to make all my changes in frame 1 and that cleared up the problems I was having.
Thanks again to everyone who offered help.

Your lamp looks very nice. I still had to fake the flame because I'm not rendering these toon images. I taking a screenshot of the Poser preview window and then manipulating it further to get the comic book look. Here's the scene with your lamp:

Square lantern . Copyright seachnasaigh 2014. This model free for both personal and commercial renders; do not redistribute. Those holding a valid Poser Pro 2014 Game Dev license may export this model as a game asset consistent with the SmithMicro GameDev eula.
If you are using P5-P8/Pro2010, hide or delete the "emitter" props, and substitute a Poser point light. The glow aura will still work. In P9+, render with IDL engaged and the lantern will cast light; to adjust intensity, change the ambient_value of the emitter props in the advanced material room.
Very cool! I have to give that a try.

That's true. But in the cartoon panel I needed the light to see the figures, and therefore I needed some reason why the light was there, so I added the candle. I probably should have added some kind of lantern, but I couldn't find a prop for that.

Interesting. I wouldn't expect a true transparent object to produce specular light bounce.
It doesn't actually emit light. That effect was done with a point light right at the same place where the transparent cylinder is placed.

I wanted to be sure this technique would work with other kinds of poses, so I took an earlier pose and ran it through the same identical steps with the same identical settings, and it looks to me like it works just fine for this very different image:

The comicbook style is NOT in the sketch render ... it's separate. Once you discover it, it'll be like a free-for-all in a candy store!!! It is amazing!
Yes, I know. That's what I've been using. I experimented a bit with sketch render, but it wasn't at all like what I wanted. All these samples I've posted were done in the Poser preview window, the "pose" window, NOT with sketch render.
I discovered that if I add the outlining BEFORE I do the watercolor filter in FotoSketcher it comes out much better. Here's the latest version: (But I think I got the outlining a little TOO heavy on this one. I need to dial it back just a little.)

I'd add some high lights looks a bit flat.
you can use shaders. zbrush has some cool toon shaders I'm sure ya could make shaders in Poser.
matcaps are cool zBrush & Blender has them. Does Poser have matcaps ?
Topaz Labs have some cool 2D effects
App's like Gimp ,Photoshop etc etc have cool effects for them also.
I'm going for the flat, vintage comic book look. Highlights would be out of character for that. But thanks for the comments.

A quicker, easier way to get rid of all the white in GIMP is to go to Colors/Color To Alpha and select white. The white becomes a transparent alpha channel and only the black lines will be visible.
In Paintshop Pro I just use the magic wand selection tool and select any white spot and click "select similar" and hit delete. Anything deleted on a layer becomes transparent.
