Subject: Need help finding three prop models

fiziwig2 ( ) posted Tue, 22 September 2015 at 3:12 PM · edited Thu, 21 November 2024 at 4:09 AM

I'm not having any luck finding three things I need for a scene. I need to make a man who looks like he's been in a dungeon for 14 years. For any figure that works in Poser I need long, messy hair, a scraggly beard, and filthy rags for him to wear.

The long hair I'm finding is for Victoria or other females, and is long and smooth. I need long and all messed up, and for male figures. And clothing all seems to be sexy or neat and tidy. I need really raggy stuff.

Has anybody run across any of these in the Renderosity marketplace, or anywhere else?

This guy just doesn't look the part:

Well, many V4 hair models can be made to fit M4 (some even have a built in option) and most can be made messy. Using a Photoshop like program it is fairly easy to create smudged skin-tones for any model using any character map you have ... and clothes .. same as with the body maps plus some transparency maps to tear the clothes and make them ragged. IF you want ready made clothes, look for Zombie like clothes, they might fit the bill. If you need instructions on creating these effects let me know and I'll see what I can find.

Thanks for the info. Being such a newbie at Poser (almost a whole week now!) I hadn't even thought about modifying textures, let alone altering models. I did download Blender yesterday, but I haven't been brave enough to even run it yet. hehe.

Oh, well, I may have over extended my suggestions. I need to shut down now, but please, know I'll be back tomorrow and I'll give you some tips and help you along on this. Take care!

Thanks for your suggestions. I solved the clothing problem for now by tweeking the clothing pose dials so that it didn't fit right. Cheating, but it worked! I also found some hair, but I had to position it manually, which is OK because I'm not going to animate it, so it doesn't have to conform. I haven't found a beard yet, but I'm still looking. This is what I have so far:

Transparency maps would work better for the clothes. There are tutorials out there on how to create them (I think there is even one on this site). Then the clothing wouldn't look like it's melting into his body.

If I had a nickle for ever time a woman told me to get lost, I could buy Manhattan.

I checking in ... as far as a beard goes, look at some tutorials for the hair room ... it could do exactly what you need. There is a learning curve though.

There are several free beards for Poser figures out there. If you can't find one specifically for M4 that you like, just get one for any of the other figures, parent it to M4's face, then use some magnets to make it look right.

I don't know of any beards that will animate with mouth movements, though. But, a magnet should be able to take care of that, as well.

Thanks. I figured out how to do transparency maps and you're right, they do look a lot better. I still need to to an alternate texture to make the clothing look dirty and stained. Learning new software is a slow process, but each render gets just a little bit better than the last one. That's encouraging.

Just wondering, did you find the filthy rags for both men to wear?

The Count of Monte Cristo! I've seen two different versions and I loved them both. Ambitious!! When and where can we read your interpretation?

The hair made for Soto's Vincent character might be worth a try. It's free and it has fits for other figures too - you don't need to have The Freak to use the hair. To get that unwashed look for hair, I ditch the texture maps and any specular, and just keep the transparency. Then apply a uniform dark brown colour.

Ripped clothing is probably best done with dynamic cloth, but I guess you haven't reached that part of the learning curve yet? :)

If you have a 2d raster graphics program such as Photoshop, gimp or Paintshop Pro ... you can do a transparent layer on a copy of James' texture map and make him as dirty as you like. (Make sure it is a copy of the original so you don't lose use of that one).

Thanks everyone for all the help and suggestions. I got transparency maps figured out (I use PaintshopPro) to create them. I'm working now on getting the "filthy rag" look. Also, I realized that by removing the belt loops and pockets from the pants texture (using a copy of the original texture, of course) I can make them look more like 19th century pants.

I also discovered that the transparent parts of the clothing still cast shadows in preview mode, so I had to turn of shadows for each part so that I could see to arrange my lighting properly.

I was looking at the advanced materials page with all the nodes and connections, and I couldn't make any sense out of it. Then, after a couple of hours of fiddling with it, and reading the manual, the light bulb suddenly lit up and it all made sense to me! funny how that works.

I'm still going to try other hair, and I haven't tried a beard yet. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll go check them out.

@quietrob: I don't know yet what I'll do with my project. I figure out somewhere to post it. Probably on my old website, which hasn't been updated in 10 years and probably hasn't had a single visitor in that time either. hehe

CHeck Kozaburo, he has some darned good hair, well known, even has one probably close to what you're looking for. I don't have a url, maybe someone else does.

Doric.
